Job application support thread

I’ve been looking and applying since September. I had one job offer but the conditions were not great so I declined it. I’m really struggling now, applications take so long and I’m not being shortlisted, I used to get shortlisted for pretty much everything I applied for!
anyone else also losing the will to live?

How’s everyone? I had an interview yesterday and I’m willing the phone to ring

Fingers crossed for you!

I finally started my new job this week, it’s a year contract but there seems like lots to do and nobody is doing the job right now so I’m hoping I can make a case for it to be made permanent.

I've been applying for stuff. Quite selectively, as I work freelance at the moment. I'm getting frustrated by the rejections that say they've decided to proceed with candidates who better met the selection criteria when I meet and exceed the selection criteria. Im pretty sure my time working freelance is putting them off, but I object to being told I'm not meeting selection criteria when I'm more than qualified. Maddening.

PinkPomeloFruit · 20/03/2026 20:00

I didn’t get the job.

I got this response this week it’s clearly generic and therefore meaningless. It was a role I am definitely objectively overqualified for so ‘went with more qualified candidates for shortlisting’ is clearly untrue.

Hi can l join, just about to start looking for a new job, l never thought about using AI.

ThrowingDi · 20/03/2026 21:10

I had a 3rd stage job interview today, was a horrid experience

PinkPomeloFruit · 20/03/2026 22:20

@ThrowingDi oh no. Want to talk about it?

OP posts:
ThrowingDi · 20/03/2026 22:51

Yes please. It felt humiliating even!

3 on the panel, over an hour long interview, which ran over with 15 minimum questions asked.

Technical interview too, so not about my past experience but testing my knowledge on random, niche areas. As in, jumping from one discrete concept to another with no correlation. Felt like an interrogation!

I have never been in an interview where I wanted to leave part way through. I’ve experienced nothing like this before. I’m
sure it’s a rejection but I’d rather have not had to endure that process. Can’t stress enough how like, they were trying to challenge me and it felt quite awkward. I was totally unprepared as their interview guidance made the interview seem normal/competency based.

It’s awful. AI has made it worse I think as so many people will be applying

Lots of people applying, but lots of applications will be shit. I’ve done sifting before and a very high percentage of applicants are totally unsuitable for the job. It’s a bit like dating websites, where some people just stay on there for years trying their luck with everyone!

PinkPomeloFruit · 21/03/2026 12:48

@ThrowingDi that sounds awful. Poor you.

I’m struggling to get interviews. 20+ years experience and senior role in a huge brand. Can’t imagine how others are coping. The only one where recruiter called me was where a known person was able to put in a word. Even so interview isn’t confirmed. It’s doom time with the only winner being AI.

PinkPomeloFruit · 26/03/2026 22:16

How’s everyone?

OP posts:
Nitgel · 01/04/2026 09:49

Plain thats depressing
I have been offered something but am waiting the confirmed offer. Why do they take do long? Am still applying for other suitable. Roles while waiting. I find reading the bad interview threads on here reassuring. 😃

PinkPomeloFruit · 01/04/2026 19:35

@Nitgel well done!

I applied to a role that looks absolutely fantastic, you know when you genuinely see quite a rare opportunity… it closes today. Would love to get shortlisted.

Same here. I’m struggling

PinkPomeloFruit · 11/04/2026 13:10

I’ve been away over Easter and looked last night and haven’t seen a single job to apply to.

:( pinkpomelo keep going ! I'm still waiting for confirmed offer. Had to chase references.

PinkPomeloFruit · 14/04/2026 21:19

@Nitgel that is weirdos what’s your industry?

OP posts:
PinkPomeloFruit · 21/04/2026 06:25

Ahh I am feeling really cheesed off. Had a call last week with a hiring manager and felt it had gone well. This was because she asked me if she could ask the screening questions now, that she would usually do as the first stage short screening call, and basically insinuated I would be shortlisted. It was a fully remote role and they don’t come up that often in my area. Have woken up to a rejection email, after I spent all day on Friday on the application. I am honestly so sick of this awful job market.

OP posts:
Nitgel · 21/04/2026 07:33

Thats awful and such a waste of time. Is there anything else you can go for? I'm still waiting too for formal offer. Starting to lose hope.

PinkPomeloFruit · 21/04/2026 08:18

@Nitgel are you being ghosted? That is awful. I have seen a couple of jobs recently but overall it is slim pickings.
