Why can’t you sleep?

My body clock is wonky since coming back from a short break overseas.

I’m trying not to stress. Last night I took nytol but felt groggy today. I’m now in a quiet lounge with sleeping dogs. Have had a snack watching Netflix.

if you’re awake (in the UK) what are you up to? The days of feeding newborns are long gone for me - what’s happening in your house if you’re awake? 🙂

😬 makes me nervous. Best not read the preppers board otherwise I'll do a stockpile order at 2am, and that's never wise

Had no idea there was a preppers board! That definitely sounds light reading 😂

👀checks how many bog rolls we have left👀

cantsleepwontsl33p · 31/01/2026 02:09

OK I’m back. Not for me Thankyou.

although I did giggle that there is someone asking for help for their child getting into prep school (?)

Permanently wonky body clock here, after far too many years of night shifts. Even after two years of retirement, I can’t seem to get back in “sync” with the rest of the world. I’ve embraced it for the most part now, but it can be irritating if I have an early appointment.
I’ll probably get up and go downstairs shortly, make myself a cup of tea and a slice of toast. Thick tiger bread with plenty of butter and marmite, if anyone’s interested.

cantsleepwontsl33p · 31/01/2026 02:12

Oh delicious- love marmite. Yeah I think I’m going to make a cup of (decaf) tea shortly.

I won't bother checking it out then, if you've done the donkey work already and returned so soon!

The best way to have toast (unless there's homemade marmalade kicking about...)

Anxiety spike earlier tonight, my norm is then no sleep

cantsleepwontsl33p · 31/01/2026 02:45

@mammyx3do you have anything that calms your anxiety? In dark times I used to default to those crappy take a break magazines. The trashy ones where the headline would be ‘my mum is actually my uncle’. It gave a moment of relief due to the bizarre nature of the stories.

Hypothyroidism, primary hyperparathyroidism and not being able to take hrt. No 2. medical condition is the worst offender!

mammyx3 · 31/01/2026 02:50

I can’t concentrate on anything. Never been able to put the tv on either. I just scroll trying to interact with someone

Shrinkhole · 31/01/2026 02:50

Had some kind of horrendous virus and been ill in bed all week with temperature etc so just napping on and off with no regard to time. Also a terrible hacking cough which keeps waking me and is so violent my post menopausal pelvic floor can’t take it. Feeling very sorry for myself

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 31/01/2026 02:52

The last few months I’ve had so much pain round my stoma skin…..the skin looks ulcerated…..DH wants me to speak to a stoma nurse but I keep trying various creams, barrier methods etc but nowt helping….the pain is always there….plus we’re 99% of the way to getting my lovely dad into a care home which me and him are both “ happy” about but it’s a massive thing and makes me sad in the middle of the night….im sending love to you all …going to try and nap now….x

cantsleepwontsl33p · 31/01/2026 02:58

Sorry to hear all the pain and worries people are having tonight.

Im going to revert to YouTube for some music now.

Insomnia for as far back as I can remember, even as a child. At least now I can stay up. Watch tv and pretend it is normal waking hours. Honestly doesn't feel any different this time to what a normal person would do at 9pm. No work tomorrow so less pressure to get off at a decent hour 🙌

mondaytosunday · 31/01/2026 03:30

I tend to sleep from 2ish to 10ish, not solidly. I’m awake now because I watched the end of a series and once I got into bed I was about to put the phone down when my DD (at uni) texted me if the train tickets she was about to book were ok. Just as well as she was about to book it for the wrong week! So that got my brain working again and now I’m fully awake. Will read for a bit.

Son is out in town. He’s not usually out this late so not able to settle back to sleep.

@Hollyhobbi Another thyroid sufferer here too 👋🏼
Chronic insomnia linked to Hashimotos unfortunately. Along with a preschooler going through a phase of night wakes 🫠 He wakes and wakes me then I can’t get back to sleep.

Also have a DH that has FINALLY (after years of keeping me awake with snoring) managed to get a sleep apnea diagnosis and been given a CPAP machine. Life changing for him as he’s now having quality sleep. I also expected it to be life changing for me when his snoring stopped but actually, the noise of the CPAP is worse 😬 I wake up and instantly tune into the noise and just can’t get back to sleep at all.
It’s horrendous.

Finished work last night at 6pm. Got dinner etc and got DS down at 8pm. Got myself to bed for 10.30pm, asleep by 11pm, and I’ve been awake since 2.35am - and that will likely be me for the night. I’ve got a 6am alarm for work 😔

Yes one of my teenagers is out too. I can see their location and it’s just making me wistful for a time when I could get by on so little sleep, have fun and be fine for work the next day.

Oh that sounds like such a double edged sword. My DH snored but has lost weight and it’s no longer a problem. It was fricken awful at times though. I’d wear earplugs and he’d still wake me up.

I spilled nail polish on my fitted sheet earlier and although I managed to blot it up and get it out with nail varnish remover, the room stank! So I've decamped to the sofa...

mammyx3 · 31/01/2026 03:54

I’m on the sofa too. No sleep for me so far

Focusispower · 31/01/2026 03:55

My four year old has diarrhea and for the second night in a row has needed to go
to the toilet a few times. No other symptoms so I’m busy googling….wondering if it’s worms. Oh joy.

Bless him, no accidents though, just needing a hand. but I’m awake…

@cantsleepwontsl33p The snoring was horrendous. I spent years going and sleeping in the spare room or on the couch just to try and get some sleep and I’d still hear him 🫠
Our current issue is that he now sleeps so deeply since getting his CPAP that he doesn’t hear DS when he wakes. Like DS could literally be standing in the room bawling his eyes out and DH is blissfully unaware. And not in a “I’ll just keep my eyes shut and let her deal with it” kind of way - waking him is like trying to wake a corpse 🫠
I have tried earplugs but I just cannot sleep when I can’t hear my surroundings. I panic that I wouldn’t hear DS if he needed me. And I was in a house that was burgled when I was younger and didn’t hear it happening and I think that has left me with a real fear of not hearing what’s around me. I also can’t wear headphones.

cantsleepwontsl33p · 31/01/2026 03:57

My dogs are clearly wishing I would bugger off now and leave them in peace.
