If you rarely ever offend anyone how do you do it. Over the past few years I've learned about the social rules of never complaining, never giving an opinion, not talking about yourself and never grassing.

OP posts:
Taztoy · 29/01/2026 16:36

I would definitely complain if I needed to and the never grassing wouldn’t have been much use to me when I got raped.

GretaGip · 29/01/2026 16:39

Fucking earphones.

That is all.

Bigminnie1 · 29/01/2026 16:40

I never offend anyone- I am really polite, very friendly and apologise if I have done something wrong. I smile a lot and I definitely complain if i need to but I don’t do so in an aggressive way.

Bigminnie1 · 29/01/2026 16:42

I am also quite opinionated but listen well to others and will take on board what they say if it’s sensible. If not, I I’ll discuss rather than argue.

youalright · 29/01/2026 16:42

I don't agree with anything you have written. I think its how you go about things. Absolutely complain but only when its warranted and do it politely. Never be scared to share your opinion but understand an opinion isn't a fact and be open to other peoples opinions. Talking about yourself is all about balance listening to others is equally important. Grassing pick your battles someone peeing down an alleyway let it go someone murders someone grass away.

This 100%! I simply can’t understand why people think it’s ok. Drives me mad.

Comtesse · 29/01/2026 16:45

Those aren't social rules, they're the sort of thing people say passive-aggressively after they've bored someone witless by monologuing at them for an hour about their macramé or harangued them about why they don't vote Reform, and that person has cracked and told them to fuck off. Just take turns in conversation, listen to the other person, and don't express your opinions offensively or at endless length.

But yes to lots of the other stuff people have said -- don't play music that other people can hear on public transport, don't spit on the ground, blow your nose by that charming footballer thing of blocking each nostril in turn and shooting snot onto the ground, don't manspread, don't bellow in the quiet carriage of trains, don't walk three abreast on narrow pavements etc etc.

MissingSockDetective · 29/01/2026 16:58

I agree with headphones, also no screens in restaurants. There are absolutely no benefits to children of having them while sitting and eating food.

Taztoy · 29/01/2026 16:58

I really take offence at the don’t grass.

So I’ve broken a “social rule” by “grassing” on the man who raped me?

Maybe if everyone else who he had abused hadn’t obeyed that “social rule” he wouldn’t have been free to rape me. Huh?

Eleboff · 29/01/2026 16:59

Vaping. Please don’t do it somewhere where everyone else has to smell and inhale your sickly sweet vapour.

Use earphones.

Say please and thank you.

Treat everyone how you would like to be treated. I’m

Totally on your side with that one, a stupid rule made up and followed by silly people, usually those who make all the wrong choices.

Reduxrabbit · 29/01/2026 17:01

Based on today’s experience, don’t drive your van at full speed through a massive puddle, thus completely soaking pedestrians on the pavement. 30 seconds of consideration would have sufficed.

fartoomuchtoblerone · 29/01/2026 17:02

Don’t flake on people unless you genuinely have a good reason why you need to

fartoomuchtoblerone · 29/01/2026 17:04

never complaining, never giving an opinion, not talking about yourself and never grassing.

This sounds like rules for being a complete doormat rather than social rules though.

I’m not willing to follow any of these rules.

Take your backpack off when you're on public transport.

I can’t even do that. I’m disabled.

failing at life again.

GretaGip · 29/01/2026 16:39

genuine question, as I’m really not sure if this means using earphones or not using earphones? As some comments seem - to me - that it’s the using of earphones that is the problem, yet others say not using them is a problem, ie music on public transport, kids on screens somewhere public.
So I’ve no idea if I’ve completely got the wrong end of the stick! Thank you! ☺️

Thehorticuluralhussie · 29/01/2026 17:13

Don’t talk down to or raise your voice at people working in retail, hospitality, services, on the bin lorry, delivering parcels, doing road maintenance and many more. They’re doing a job that you may not want to, possibly for minimum wage, and deserve your respect. Shouting at a waitress because you’ve been waiting a while simply demonstrates your unpleasant character.

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 29/01/2026 17:14

If someone has lost weight, you should tell them they look well. If someone has put on weight, you should say nothing.

Geneticsbunny · 29/01/2026 17:15

Don't say anything about someone that you wouldn't be happy to say to their face.

Isthatsoandso · 29/01/2026 17:16

Do be quite racist and Islamaphobic but not openly in front of the managers(thrn they would really have to do something about you). Be as obnoxious and overconfident in your own abilities/intelligence as possible Bully at the slightest opportunity.
That seems to be the way of the the workplace these days.
