How many plants in your main meal today?

DragonsAndDaffs · 28/01/2026 19:01

I've been trying to reduce UPF and increase the amount of plants we eat. We try to eat the rainbow and hit 30 different plants a week.

Dinner tonight was a prawn and edamame stir fry containing 8 plants.

Anyone else trying to eat 30?

We had beef stew, so not that healthy! Then rice pudding with berries (frozen mix). So unusually big for a Wednesday evening, made from scratch, but probably high fat, high sugar etc. But despite that, it comes to 20!!! I can't help but feel it's nonsense.

Onion,
garlic,
celery,
wheat,
carrot
,broccoli,
cauliflower,
black pepper,
mustard,
horseradish,
Potato

rice,
strawberry,
raspberry,
blueberry
, red currant,
nutmeg,
cinnamon
vanilla,
cardamom.

Breakfast - porridge, raisins
Lunch - soup, so lentils were the only "new" vegetable
Snacks - banana, orange
Drinks - instant coffee, green tea, herbal tea (liquorice and fennel).

So that's 29 today. Few of which are a proper fist sized portion. And I've had cream (in the porridge), sugar (is that one?), butter, salt, red mea, coffee.... high saturated fat diet.

Zero. I’m carnivore and never been healthier!

DinoLil · 28/01/2026 21:14

Leeks, peas, beans, broccoli, spinach, potatoes.

Chisbots · 28/01/2026 21:23

Swede, carrot, potato, onion, leek & fava beans in a stew with a bit of rye bread in it, so rye, fennel and carroway seeds too.

Beef stew, so really good, I think.

ohtowinthelottery · 28/01/2026 21:24

Prawn stir fry tonight;
Cabbage
Red pepper
Green pepper
Ginger
Garlic
Chilli
Onion
Spring onion
Carrot
Cashew nuts

Breakfast was porridge with blueberries, chia seeds and flax seeds

Lunch was home made carrot and coriander soup - which also had celery in.

Had a piece of home made lemon drizzle cake this afternoon too - does the lemon count?

MakingPlans2025 · 28/01/2026 21:24

pizza Hut farmhouse pizza with mushroom = 1. Just for balance in this thread 😂

blondebombsite13 · 28/01/2026 21:29

I find it weird to class tea, coffee, onion and garlic as “plants” tbh.

I’m more of an old school 5 fruits and vegetables a day kinda gal.

Although even then it’s not something I actively count. Just trying to eat as well and and as healthily as I can.

Onions and garlic? What would you call them then? I grow them in my garden, they’re definitely plants 😆

B0D · 28/01/2026 21:37

This evening soup
carrot, parsnips, sweet potatoes, onion, celery, butter beans, ginger (7)
salad - beetroot. Cucumber, sweet corn, sprouted mixed beans, lemon (6)

mindutopia · 28/01/2026 21:38

I definitely eat 30 a week. I eat a lot of plants.

Dinner tonight was bbq tempeh, rice, soya beans, two types of sauerkraut with some other salady things.

So soya beans (in tempeh and by themselves), red cabbage, beetroot, apples, ginger, white cabbage, carrots, onions, coriander, chillies, spring onions and red peppers. Plus fresh pineapple and a pear. And does rice count? If so, that’s 15.

Planner2026 · 28/01/2026 21:38

Six.

The advice is 30 different plants per week, so we use that as an achievable target.

Prawn stir fry tonight....that had 8

Which advice is this?
Veggie chilli tonight for us so we hit 11.

justtheotheronemrswembley · 28/01/2026 21:43

It was chilli con carne out of the freezer that I'd batch-cooked a few weeks ago so from memory:

Tinned mixed beans (not sure, probably about 4 different sorts)
Tomatoes
Red pepper
Green pepper
Mushrooms
Green beans
Garlic
Onion
Dried chillies
Mixed herbs
Cocoa powder

Jacket potatoes

So 15 (if you count the different types of bean individually and include the cocoa powder and I don't see why not)

Breakfast
Coffee
raisins
tea

Lunch
lettuce
tomatoes
cucumber
carrot
orange
turmeric
cumin
coriander
potatoes

Dinner
Melon
Apple
Almonds

So, 15 today, or 16 if olive oil counts. Not bad really, considering I wasn't consciously trying to eat loads of different plants.

sewingstockings · 28/01/2026 21:52

So from last Friday I have had
lentils
yellow split peas
pearl barley
green split peas
garlic
onions
leeks
carrots
swede
peppers
lettuce
cucumber
tomatoes
potatoes
rice
mushrooms
coffee
baked beans
cabbage
pears
strawberries
apple
peaches
melon
banana
grapes
cherries
bread so wheat
chocolate
peanuts
walnuts
popcorn
cauliflower
celery
brussel sprouts.
I am eating a lot more fruit than usual as I am trying to eat healthier. I love veg.

catinateacup · 28/01/2026 21:53

We had roast chicken with roasted whole new potatoes, carrots, onion, roasted garlic, and a cauliflower cheese - so 5 plants. But for lunch I had a vegan lentil and tomato stew with herbs, a mixed chopped salad of lots of different veg (peppers, cucumber, tomato, sweetcorn, beans, chopped fine green beans), a green salad with mixed (legume) beans, and roasted beetroot, so lunch was probably about 12 in total! And oats for breakfast with almond milk and a bit of peanut butter. A decent plant day!

SabrinaThwaite · 28/01/2026 21:58

About a dozen in dinner tonight as I made a big salad with various types of salad leaves, tomato, cucumber, onion, radish, olives, carrot, avocado, peppers and nuts.

Gliblet · 28/01/2026 21:58

Dinner wasn't too much to shout about in terms of numbers (jacket potato with cheese and beans 🤣), but if I take the day as a whole:

Blueberries
Oats
Flaxseed
Chia seed
Carrot
Sultanas
Chickpeas
Beetroot
Dates
Rocket
Lambs lettuce
Spinach
Yellow pepper
Tomato
Cucumber
Spring onion
Potato

Plus coffee, breakfast tea, and green tea.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 28/01/2026 21:59

I've had a very ultra processed day. Most of my days are! My main meal tonight was pasta with vegetarian meatballs and peas, so the peas were the only veg. I did have 2 satsumas after though, and a glass of diluted apple juice with. For lunch I had butternut squash soup and for breakfast a banana and coconut smoothie. I'm not even sure I've really hit 5-a-day today. I'm going shopping tomorrow, intending to stock up on healthier things.

Justbreathagain · 28/01/2026 22:02

Breakfast
Porridge
Banana
Walnuts
Chai seeds
Honey

Lunch
Homemade honey oat loaf
Scrambled egg

Dinner chicken pie
Onion
Leeks
Mushroom
Garlic
Stock
Cream fraiche
Thyme
Chicken
Pastry store bought (homemade was a fail)
Peas on the side

I would say 11 today not bad !

Bombinia · 28/01/2026 22:02

Only about five tonight, but I'm vegan so we do eat a lot of different plants over the day.

Aren't the veggie meatballs a plant source ?

Surely by the slightly mad rules that's tomatoes wheat herbs (how many) garlic mushrooms?

JKGalbraithsTable · 28/01/2026 22:06

Today I had:
Bread and hummus
sourdough bread from the craft bakery with loads of different seeds in - the seeds would each count as 1 but I don’t know how many different ones there were; say 4.
chickpeas
EVOO
tahini
lemon juice
Seitan roast with leftover veg and gravy
tofu
garlic
onion
rosemary
thyme
sage
miso
brussel spouts
red onion
black pepper
broccoli
green beans
pasta bake
aubergine
tomato
mushroom
black olives
cashews
snack
90% dark chocolate (counts!)
Maple and pecan cake
almonds
pecans

Maybe 28?
