How many plants in your main meal today?

I've been trying to reduce UPF and increase the amount of plants we eat. We try to eat the rainbow and hit 30 different plants a week.

Dinner tonight was a prawn and edamame stir fry containing 8 plants.

Anyone else trying to eat 30?

I'm pretty sure you have to count herbs and spices as a quarter or a half of a portion..... I would say putting paprika, cumin, coriander and garlic powder in my dinner is 1.....not 4 as many people seem to be counting. Perhaps if you have them multiple times a week it adds up.

I actually find it difficult, and I'm one of the crazy people buying the Zoe Daily 30 mix so I do get my 30 a week because I sprinkle that on everything. But if you eat a lot of the same meals on repeat as I do then it's difficult. I had a really healthy lunch of kefir, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, pecans and chia seeds today.....but I can't count the berries or nuts again this week.

I don't worry about it too much in terms of counting. Buying mostly frozen vegetables has helped because I can add lots of different veg without worrying about what needs using up from the fridge. I've also found it helpful to think if I'm adding herbs and spices to just add a few more each time for variety, or buy a different type of nuts or seeds in the weekly shop so we're mixing it up.

I've read that it's a teaspoon of any dried herb (Across the week is okay) or that each dried herb counts for 1/4 of a plant out of your 30.

I can assure you the amount of my garlic I use, it counts! 😀

A spice is a whole ingredient, like a berry or a seed that’s just been dried. Not the same as the industrial processing that happens to most white flour we see in the supermarket. I suppose an artisanal wholewheat flour that’s been ground on a stone plate by woodland sprites would be ok.

At the end of the day we all make our own decisions on what to count. You seem very invested in being able to count flour, so you do you. You can count lumps of coal for all it affects anyone else!

If I make a loaf of bread from flour ,water, yeast and salt...that's the same as using chili powder in my 532 types of vegetable curry....

These made up rules make no sense!

Well done you win a prize 🌟

I fear my prize is going to be the shits 😂 I overdid the fruit and raw veg today tbh. I was hungry.

You didn’t make the bread out of the kernel of wheat. So (TO ME) it is not comparable to a spice which is a whole berry or seed. As I have already answered.

You disagree, you’ve made your point. I think we can leave it now,

HostaCentral · 29/01/2026 23:15

So my understanding is that for anything to count it has to be the "whole" food. So no white bread (flour), white rice, white pasta, fruit or veg juice etc

Although this seems contrary to the long lived Japanese and Italians who only eat the white varieties of said grains.

One of my favourite foodie youtubers cooks this every single Friday night. It looks amazing. She transformed my cooking actually- she has a VERY heavy hand on all spices, herbs (fresh and dried) and garlic generally.

Poppy shows you how to make her delicious, buttery and smooth confit garlic. It’s perfect just as it is but can also be used in all sorts of recipes.

@StrawberryKetchup02 , Oat milk is UPF, as is coconut yoghurt. Nutritional yeast isn't a plant but it is nutritious.

Edited

Yes I think it depends. I make my own oat milk in the Thermomix using oats and water. Organic oat milks are similar.
The coconut yoghurt I use is minimally processed and 75% coconut milk.
I don’t get too strung up by UPF definitions - technically things like tofu and tempeh are processed but they need to be.

Ooh, good thread! Yesterday’s plants:

Breakfast (yoghurt with fruit and nuts):
Strawberries
Blueberries
Almonds
Sunflower seeds
Flaxseed

Lunch (chicken and mixed bean salad):
Sweetcorn
Chickpeas
Kidney beans
Black beans
Butter beans
Mixed leaves
Spring onion
Cherry tomatoes

Dinner (chicken bolognese):
Courgette
Carrot
Celery
Onion
Garlic
Mushrooms
Tomatoes
Fresh Basil

Snack:
Banana

Much better than I thought it would be, looks like I’m on track for the week 😂 I’m a new WLI starter and whilst I’ve always eaten a lot of fruit and veg, I’m a fiend for UPF, poor portion control and snacking so I’m being mindful to only eat at mealtimes or only have a snack when I am genuinely hungry and make sure the food I am eating is good for my body!

FourSeasonsLobelia · 30/01/2026 10:38

This morning i tried to eat my porridge but am still stress-sick. So I only had half of it but there were raspberries, apples, sultanas, maple syrup, oats, cinnamon, cashew nuts. I couldn't get through it though. DH and I are supposed to go out for lunch. There is a terrific pub near us that do cauliflower tempura bites with whipped feta, chickpeas and pomegranate seeds so that's on my agenda I think.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/01/2026 18:13

New plants today;

Kidney beans
Chickpeas
Parsley
Cumin, Coriander, Cinnamon, Ras-al-hanout
Sweetcorn
Lime

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 30/01/2026 23:27

Today is my third day keeping track and after adding cucumber, celery, chickpeas, black beans, sweet potato and mango I'm up to 19. I feel like I'm powering through but I guess it will get a lot harder quickly when I've reached the end of my usual foods and I have to try and push myself to add variety.

Maryberrysbouffant · 09/02/2026 21:20

Onion
garlic
ginger
coriander
spinach
chickpeas
spices
does rice count? Assume so so I’ll go with 8

BringBackCatsEyes · 09/02/2026 21:24

Oh….haven’t had a main meal.
I had some blueberries at breakfast and some rocket in my lunch sandwich.
Plant-poor.

soupyspoon · 09/02/2026 21:28

Ive lost track on my plant app but today Ive had avocado, red pepper, green pepper, onion, capers, mushrooms, beetroot, cucumber, tomato, strawberrie, blackcurrent, raspberry, sesame seed, pumpkin seed, chia seed, tea, coffee, cashew, almond.

I havent included herbs and spices as its too laborious.
