How many plants in your main meal today?

I've been trying to reduce UPF and increase the amount of plants we eat. We try to eat the rainbow and hit 30 different plants a week.

Dinner tonight was a prawn and edamame stir fry containing 8 plants.

Anyone else trying to eat 30?

I had jacket spud for tea, with beetroot, olives, kimchi, chilli and onion (plus tuna) so not as many veg as I'd have if I was cooking from scratch.
But that's fine as I needed an easy meal tonight.

ReignOfError · 28/01/2026 22:08

Tonight was just 5. Six if you count the lemon in the drizzle cake.

JKGalbraithsTable · 28/01/2026 22:08

Oooh and oregano and carrot! 30!

Aren't the veggie meatballs a plant source ?

They're 'rehydrated textured soya protein', and a lot of gubbins I can't pronounce, so so utterly ultra processed they can't count I'm afraid.

MrsCarson · 28/01/2026 22:37

We avoid HPF as much as possible dinners are made from scratch daily (or leftovers)
Dinner tonight
Potatoes
Carrots
Parsley
Garlic
Black pepper
Chili
Rice
Tangerines
(Plus dairy and meat items).

SquigglePigs · 28/01/2026 22:41

We had lasagne for dinner so: onion, carrot, celery, garlic, tomatoes, basil, oregano, black pepper. Served with broccoli and green beans.

I can't remember how you're meant to count herbs etc so 7 + 3 herbs/spices.

Womaninhouse17 · 28/01/2026 22:43

I've been doing the 30 plants a week for several months. I love fruit and vegetables so I've found it relatively easy. I had 9 in my main meal (a sweet potato and bean curry with broccoli) and apple crumble. Grapes at breakfast, beetroot, carrot, cherries at lunch plus a slice of date and walnut loaf and a handful of mixed nuts as snacks. That's 15.

Pearlyb · 28/01/2026 22:44

This week -

Rocket
Tomatoes
Olives
Avocado
Peppers
Carrots
Potatoes
Rice
Broccoli
Onions
Beans
Bananas
Tangerines
Raisins
Sunflower seeds
Popcorn
Lemon juice
Coffee (lots of coffee!)

With four days to go, I think I'll easily hit 30!

shellyleppard · 28/01/2026 22:45

Do baked beans count as plant??

Saz12 · 28/01/2026 22:50

... bit I can eat 300 a week without having 5-a-day because the portion sizes are irrelevant?
OK, obviously 300 is a stretch, but a seed mix (5), a frozen veg mix (5) , a spice mix (5) , a sl7ce of carrot cake (5) a bit of gingerbread, a couple different herbal teas (10) l, ice cream, pizza, ... you're almost there, with out having any actually healthy meals.

Crispynoodle · 28/01/2026 22:50

I had veg spring rolls homemade coleslaw and jacket potato with a huge salad so I guess a lot! I also eat a huge amount of fruit during the day at least 4 things. I probably hit 30 after 3 days but I’ve always eaten the rainbow from very young due to preference rather than design

BillieWiper · 28/01/2026 22:57

Is wheat a plant? Is yeast? Is pepper? Does a tiny bit of olive oil count?

If not then three. Sundried toms, lettuce and lemon juice.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 28/01/2026 22:57

Breakfast: oats, blueberries, raspberries.
Lunch: tomatoes, mushrooms.
Dinner: Pak Choi, red peppers, green peppers, green beans, carrots, red onion, baby corn, broccoli.
Snack: grapes.

That’s 14. 15 if you add in coffee (Tim Spector does).

Emori · 28/01/2026 23:02

Potato is a plant, right?

TheKateColumbo · 28/01/2026 23:11

Brunch - soup
leeks, carrots, lentils, onions, garlic, lemon.
Dinner- pie, colcannon, vegetables
cabbage, potatoes, scallion, samphire, peas, broccoli.
Not bad but I doubt I eat 30 different plants a week though.
I hardly eat any fruit, only really frozen cherries and the odd grape and mostly eat the same green vegetables every day.

Grumpynan · 28/01/2026 23:17

Breakfast

blueberries / strawberries on yoghurt

lunch

lettuce / tomato /cucumber / onion /radish / celery / red pepper / salad cress

dinner

lasagna so a lot of lunch repeat I suppose - onion tomato celery, but added some carrot and herbs

snacks

banana and an orange (a lovely big red one )

does drinking fresh cloudy apple juice count, it was in a bottle

ProfessorBinturong · 28/01/2026 23:18

Dinner - veg chilli:
Rice
Quinoa
Tomato
Lentils
Onion
Garlic
Sweet potato
Beetroot
Carrot
Aubergine
Peas
Sweetcorn
Cocoa powder
Chillis
(Assorted spices not counted)
Avocado
With a glass of orange and mango juice

So 17.

Breakfast is a homemade porridge mix with 3 grains, 4 seeds and 3 dried fruits, topped with coconut yogurt, chia seeds and fermented blueberries.

So that's another 11 (not counting the coconut, and 1 of the grains was also in dinner) plus 2 of the suggested daily 3 portions of fermented food.

Lunch of a peanut butter sandwich with red cabbage sauerkraut brings me to 30 (more if you count various spices and olive oil for cooking) for the day, and gets me to the 3 fermented portions as well.

HostaCentral · 28/01/2026 23:24

Blimey. Sometimes I only manage one or two. Oooops. Chicken breast with broccoli for example. We eat pretty simply tbh. Not much upf, but also not much variety.

Forty85 · 28/01/2026 23:27

Dinner -
Ginger
Garlic
Tomato
Chilli
Peppers
Onion
Broccoli
Carrot
Black pepper
Paprika

Rest of the day -
Oats
Orange
Kiwi
Spinach
Cucumber
Celery
Raisins
Strawberries
pumpkin seeds
chia seeds
Blueberries
Lemon
Tea
100% cocoa powder

I had overnight oats with chia seeds, strawberries, blueberries and raisins topped with Greek yogurt mixed with cocoa powder for breakfast. A salad for lunch with spinach, lemon juice squeezed on, salad stuff listed, feta cheese and pumpkin seeds on top and a kiwi. Dinner I made a beef stir fry and tonight I've had an orange as a snack.

So 10 for dinner and 24 today in total.

timefortvnow · 28/01/2026 23:27

8

ProfessorBinturong · 28/01/2026 23:27

Oh, forgot 2 types of nut in the porridge. So 32 today.

On the high end of normal for us, but not particularly unusual.

Yes Ive got a thread going about it.

My 7 day tally today is 39, didnt quite make the 40 tonight as planned as I went off the idea of cherries and had tahini on toast. Although technically is that sesame seed? I didnt add that.

My main meal this evening was only 3, 4 at a push. I dont always include everything otherwise I would be logging all day

Today over all is 18 and three quarters.

Tonissister · 28/01/2026 23:32

Brown rice

veg curry made from:
onions
swede
parsnips
carrots
spinach
tomatoes
lentils
garlic
fresh ginger
various spices
with lime pickle

That's 12 - counting spices as one.

soupyspoon · 28/01/2026 23:34

Herbs and seasonings count as half and a quarter respectively

ThoughtsQuestions · 28/01/2026 23:36

foobio · 28/01/2026 19:06

We're pescatarian and enjoy veg, so our meals often contain a lot! Tonight's was 10+
Onion
Garlic
Ginger
Tomato
Coconut
Chickpeas
Cauliflower
Spinach
Sweet potato
Carrot

  • herbs & spices

I would have counted 4 if I cooked that
