My friends seemed like they were freezing …

…. came round for a takeaway, heating on 20 when they arrived. They had layers on … removed some but soon put them back on. They stayed on even when I turned it up to 23 … I was boiling, sitting there in a shirt.

Are they skinny and wearing hardly any clothes? Or sat near a draft? Or just a bit shy/awkard and like keeping clothes on?

Ticktockk · 18/01/2026 19:56

Send them round to ours - it’s 16-17 all day 🤣

BambinaCucina · 18/01/2026 19:58

I really feel the cold.

Our livingroom is currently 20° and I have a max thermal top on and my thick dressing gown.

I wear a max thermal top and a thick wooly jumper along with 2 pairs of thermal leggings at my mums. I don't do it to be rude, I just feel the cold. Sometimes I get so cold (even inside) that my hands don't work properly.

I would feel it more rude to sit in a tshirt shivering, personally 🤷🏻‍♀️

My house is freezing whenever I go to anyone there’s house I am boiling!
My friends freeze in my house, I tell them to later up 😂

Reminds me of a dear friend, years ago, who had a room in a beautiful but uninsulated old house. He had a long room with an inadequate gas fire about halfway along. So when anyone went to visit, in preparation they (me included) automatically put on a jumper, except in the middle of summer, when a warm cardigan would suffice.

I would be sweating if it was that hot! I've got used to it being around 16 degrees but wearing lots of layers. If it's much higher I feel groggy and headachy. Heating off all night but I love my feather duvet with extra blankets and my cat to keep me cosy 😻

Buzyizzy217 · 18/01/2026 20:34

This completely. Yes I wear a fleece and jogging bottoms indoors, but isn’t that what they are for? Heating at 18.5, I’m good.

Buzyizzy217 · 18/01/2026 20:36

Just a jumper? Surely you wear a jumper indoors anyway? We all had Christmas jumpers on for our meal at DS house.

Don't visit me then, all winter its been between 0 and 4 degrees in my house :-(

Do you live in an igloo?

The temp.in my well insulated home has never dropped below 20°. Even when recently it was 6° below zero! People are incredulous when I tell them the heating i'snt on. The thermostat is set to auto switch on heating if the temp. drops below 18° it's never happened. Heating bills are not a concern 😊

Why is your house so cold?

Because I cannot afford a heating oil delivery, and no longer have a car to go fetch cans of it from the petrol station! There is a fireplace, and I have wood, but apparently not allowed to burn it now in my area so lots of layers it is! Takes me right back to childhood, but at least theres not ice on the insides of the windows this time around! You do get used to it, I'm either constantly moving or asleep under the blankets!

YerMaWantsYa · 18/01/2026 23:25

19 or 20 is fine if you're cooking, cleaning etc but to sit around at anything below 20 can be chilly.
We both work from home and thermostat is set to 22 but we occasionally need to bolster that with electric heater.
In evenings, we have gas fire on in living room on thermostat that will switch off at 24.
If the house is kept warm and not constantly getting cold and having to get back up to hear, the bills aren't that dear.
I WFH by choice as our office is kept at 18 and it's just too cold to concentrate.

Ap42 · 19/01/2026 00:10

I've been on monjaro since last May, is there any chance your friend could be on it? I only ask as the only side effect I have is a cold to the bone chill. Its awful, and no amount of heating warms me up until I get into bed.
That said, i've always suffered with the cold and my house is comfy at 21 degrees.

You might get used to it but you are risking serious damage to your health Sad is there no financial help you can get for heating costs? Neighbour who could give you a lift to the petrol station?

sorryIdidntmeanto · 19/01/2026 06:42

I hate feeling too hot, and I hate the background buzz of central heating. I can only cope with it for a few hours at a time.

For anyone else here with a cold house can I just recommend M&S 250 denier fur lined tights. The best £8 you’ll ever spend!

I just don’t shave my legs from September onwards and I’ve already got fur lined tights

Fibrous · 19/01/2026 11:25

I thought I felt the cold with hypothyroidism and a resting heart rate in the thirties - but the temperatures on this thread are crazy, so I don't think I feel the cold afterall!

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 19/01/2026 12:51

I keep the thermostat on 20 and then try and keep the radiators on 3 out of 6.
I can still wear a t-shirt and hoodie if I'm particularly cold or take the hoodie off if I'm having a sweaty moment.
My friends would probably stand by the radiator and warm their hands up for a bit, if they came round and were cold.

I can't remember the last time I shaved my legs but I did admire the length of hair the other day 😆 must be just a bit under an inch long 🤭😂🤣🤣 but I don't have many leg hairs...🤷🏼‍♂️
