My friends seemed like they were freezing …

…. came round for a takeaway, heating on 20 when they arrived. They had layers on … removed some but soon put them back on. They stayed on even when I turned it up to 23 … I was boiling, sitting there in a shirt.

I would be cold at 20 and once I’m cold I find it really hard to warm up if sat still, putting the heating up a couple of degrees once I’m already freezing wouldn’t do enough to warm me back up unfortunately.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 17/01/2026 22:55

I’m astounded that people routinely heat their homes to 22 degrees! Your bills must be huge. My living room is set to 18 if I’m in a blanket, 19 if not. And I’m regularly told (by my mum) that my house is too hot

JohnBullshit · 17/01/2026 22:56

What sort of flooring do you have? I find laminate and some other hard floors really chill a room. My carpeted rooms are really quite cosy at 19 degrees, but bathrooms and kitchen are less forgiving. Your feet get cold.

DinoLil · 17/01/2026 22:58

I put the heating to 16 when I know HCP are coming to visit. That's very toasty for me and I want to fling the windows open. They are shivering in their coats.

Being cold is miserable. J would be cold at 20, and wouldn't warm up until 25

So do you have your heating on all summer?

MeganM3 · 17/01/2026 23:00

Also going to mention carpet. A couple of our rooms are gorgeously cosy and warm & can easily be 25 degrees when the laminate / wood floor room next door is 18 degrees.
The thermostat is in the hallway and I don’t think very useful because it really depends on where you’re sitting in each room. It’s probably best to ask them if they are warm enough and offer a hot drink while you raise the temperature of the particular room.
I’m always wrapped up warm at this time of year as I hate being cold and I’m used to wearing layers. Maybe it’s just what they were wearing for the day in general. Unless sat there in a hat and a coat.

moto748e · 17/01/2026 23:00

If you're coming downstairs in the morning, and it's 20 deg, that will feel comfortably warm. but if you've been in the cold outdoors for some time, and then you come into a room at 20 deg, it may seem warm for the first ten minutes, but might not feel warm enough a bit later.

Livingthebestlife · 17/01/2026 23:01

Being cold is so uncomfortable, I have left people's homes due to the cold. One of my sister's sits in her home with half her wardrobe on ! Hate that, I hate having to wear a gazillion layers and then my coat, I do that outdoors!

WatalotIgot · 17/01/2026 23:04

If you are thin, have blood circulation issues, chemotherapy, taking certain preventative drugs, elderly or young you need a warmer atmosphere to sit in comfortably. That temperature would probably be over 20 degrees at the coldest part of the home.

Bare in mind also when over 75 or are very young, ideally the bedroom temperature should not be below 17 degrees.

Who cares about climate change? You can’t possibly suggest people put a jumper on!!

ToeSucker · 17/01/2026 23:08

I'm cold until 24.
Always have an oodie over my jumper until that temp.
Jumper only at 24.

CKN · 17/01/2026 23:17

Egglio · 17/01/2026 21:47

If they aren't paying the heating bill, they can put another layer on.

Gosh I’d Hate to be a guest in your house!

Surely if you had guests coming you’d make sure the house was warm for them.

onlymethen · 17/01/2026 23:28

I respond d to a post a while ago about my sisters house.
last year it was 13 this year it was 8.
they are brilliant hosts but have a large house with numerous rooms they don’t heat.
it’s miserable to visit and I’ve said never again.

helplessbanana · 17/01/2026 23:28

We visited some friends a few years ago in mid winter. They had leather sofas which were seriously cold and stiff to sit on, and which seemed to suck the heat out of you instead of warming up where you sat. I was chilled to the bone by the time we left.

MrsJeanLuc · 17/01/2026 23:47

I run my heating at 18-19 during the day; increasing to 20-21 in the evening.
The living room has the biggest radiator, so if we sit in there to watch tv with the curtains drawn and the door closed it'll get over 21deg, which I find uncomfortably warm but dp likes.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 17/01/2026 23:48

I have difficulty adjusting to temperature, it's related to a thyroid issue. So I could be somewhere cold for a while, then still feel it ages later although I'm now in a warm place or vice versa. I hate going to one relatives house because it's freezing in winter in common areas and boiling in rooms where heating is on. So if i go to the toilet I could be shivering with the cold 20 mins later despite sitting by a fire

moto748e · 17/01/2026 23:49

Without wanting to get super-Spartist about it 😀, I do often think there is class-based element to this. I have spent much of life living in poorly heated and insulated houses, like many posters I'm sure, and now I find myself living in a nice little house, which I keep pleasantly warm at all times. I have a wood-burner, and it's a real pleasure on a winter evening. If the roof doesn't leak, and you're nice and warm, that's the important stuff done, for me.

RampantIvy · 17/01/2026 23:58

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 17/01/2026 22:01

They would be baltic in my house then. Only have the heating on 18 degrees 😂

Seriously though; 20 degrees is generally shorts and t-shirt weather outside right?! It’s a bit odd they were so cold unless they are sickening for something

No, it isn't shorts and T-shirt weather. I'm not a postman.

We are all different. Our thermostat is set at 20 degrees, and if I am sat working or watching TV I will be wearing a jumper at that temperature.

What's with the regular competitive underheaters on MN every winter? People who feel the cold easily are not morally inferior or lesser human beings.

Tired6789 · 18/01/2026 00:11

20 is cold to me

Notashamed13 · 18/01/2026 00:11

17 here with an hours boost to 19 if needed 🤔 dreading summer

Anonanonay · 18/01/2026 00:12

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 17/01/2026 22:18

If I get to particularly cold it’s hard to heat up so I can understand still keeping layers on at 23. When I’m cold it can take a warm bath to heat me through.
If I remain at a comfortable temperature (20 ish) then I am fine.

Have you had your thyroid levels checked? The needing a warm bath thing was a warning symptom that mine had completely checked out. Once I was on medication, it stopped being necessary.

Notashamed13 · 18/01/2026 00:15

I'm menopausal so generate my own unwanted heat, my argument is that you can always put more clothes on if you are cold.

ComedyGuns · 18/01/2026 00:18

ThroughTheRedDoor · 17/01/2026 21:40

If I have a room full of guests then I find 18 - 20 is just nice.

Do you have a big open plan space?

I agree. I work in healthcare and 20° is optimum. If it’s cold then your insulation needs improvement.

District66 · 18/01/2026 00:20

I don’t know if my house is weird, but I’ve never had it over 18 ever
And most of the time it heats up in 20 minutes and then we have to turn it down
i’m wondering if the thermostat broke

ComedyGuns · 18/01/2026 00:25

We go to in laws most Christmasses and it’s freezing in a big house. At least half of us keep our coats/jackets on, but they don’t seem to notice!
