My friends seemed like they were freezing …

…. came round for a takeaway, heating on 20 when they arrived. They had layers on … removed some but soon put them back on. They stayed on even when I turned it up to 23 … I was boiling, sitting there in a shirt.

I have anemia and I’m always freezing. This time of year I need to have the heating on at least 23 to be anywhere approaching warm even dressed in lots of layers.

I’ve invested in electric hand warmers and heated blankets so I can try and be more economical and warm at home but in other people’s houses I’m often freezing.

Hyperbowl · 18/01/2026 10:48

I always keep my house 19-20 degrees, anything above that and I’m boiling. I guess everyone is different but I’d feel like I were suffocating at 23.

That’s uninhabitable. Please tell me there’s no kids living there? I get it’s an old cottage which is going to be colder, but have you had your roof checked? Checked for any gaps anywhere which could be letting drafts in? I’m only saying this because I’ve got Rheumatoid Arthritis and know what the cold does to your body. My mum has horrendous arthritis after growing up in a home with no heating (during & post WW2).

It’s really not, the kids are very healthy thanks. My point was that in some houses it’s impossible to get them over a certain heat. We have double glazing, new doors and the loft is fully insulated but it’s 200 years old, has a rubble filled cavity (that you can’t insulate further), high ceilings and every room is large - it’s a Georgian double fronted house, not a cottage.

Its lovely and warm in the small lounge with the log burner and the kids have nice warm quilts. No call to social services required!

I have a couple of friends I visit where I layer up before I go because their houses are freezing. I wear thermals etc. But do try to use unobtrusive layers so as not to embarrass them.

«When your home has high humidity, the air feels colder, making it harder to heat »
I also find that south facing windows and dew point effect the way we feel.
I close the curtains on rooms I am not occupying to keep what warmth there is except on the sunny ones.
I am in an EU country which is colder in winter and hotter in summer than the UK.

What do you
mean by the sentence in << >>?

my House humidity is fine- I have thermometers from Amazon that show me what it’s at and it’s fine.

I quoted Sorry.

I quoted Sorry.

But what do you mean by the sentence in the brackets?

BadgernTheGarden · 18/01/2026 11:18

How are you measuring the temperature? Do you have a thermometer in the room you were sitting in or was that just the temperature the heating was set to?

BadgernTheGarden · 18/01/2026 11:22

Strongle · 18/01/2026 11:14

But what do you mean by the sentence in the brackets?

Dry cold doesn't feel as cold as damp cold.

Dry cold doesn't feel as cold as damp cold.

I know that. But I don’t understand the purpose of the brackets?

BadgernTheGarden · 18/01/2026 11:25

I would assume it means it's a quote from somewhere.

It's just a quote from somewhere.

Yeah but isn’t that normally quotation marks not brackets?

im autistic for reference.

AnnieLummox · 18/01/2026 11:43

I don’t really understand what you’re asking. If she was cold, she was cold - you can’t choose whether people feel cold or not. She had layers on, so she wasn’t expecting you to do anything.

The time to get annoyed is if she’s sitting there in a sleeveless top moaning that it’s cold (thank you, ex-friend).

jamandcustard · 18/01/2026 11:44

I'm autistic too.

Brackets like that can also mean a quote.

Thank you I didn’t know that!

im off to google.

Disturbia81 · 18/01/2026 11:48

I can put my heating on that but have air coming in gaps in various places so some people might find it cold. I usually have the fire on too.

Chisbots · 18/01/2026 11:55

I'm keeping the house at around 18C just now. You do get used to it, it's definitely what your own personal comfort zone is and generally when I'm cold, it's not related to the actual house temp. It's interesting to keep an eye on temps and stuff.

Tadpolesinponds · 18/01/2026 12:10

People just need to start wearing layers. If you wear a thermal vest and 2 woollen jumpers you can put your heating down by several degrees.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 18/01/2026 12:46

Where is your thermostat situated? It could be reading hot if too close to a heat source.

Sorry for the delay I have been to market, I am not a techie and it came up like that, my fault.
I am very interested for myself, do your inside thermostats have humidity readings?

vanillaskin · 18/01/2026 12:51

I bump mine up if I have guests. Work is 16c and I wear a thermal top, jumper and heated jacket but it feels a lot colder than it is
so when I get home, 19c feels roasting!

Strongle · 18/01/2026 12:51

Yes they do. I got them on Amazon, as I said.

WatalotIgot · 18/01/2026 13:39

I grew up where to use the toilet we had to go outside, there was a small paraffin lantern to stop the tank freezing, the door didn't go right to the top or bottom, probably 6in gap and very little heating indoors. I have always found it hard to keep warm and so does DH at 19 degrees. We are in a reasonably insulated 30 yr old house. We are both active outdoors.
