My friends seemed like they were freezing …

…. came round for a takeaway, heating on 20 when they arrived. They had layers on … removed some but soon put them back on. They stayed on even when I turned it up to 23 … I was boiling, sitting there in a shirt.

My friends warned me their house was chilly when I went over recently so I took slippers and wore a thermal top. Heating was set to 18degrees which is too cold for me if we are sitting around.

OakElmAsh · 17/01/2026 22:23

At 20 in my house I'm fine if I'm up doing jobs around the kitchen or otherwise constantly moving, but I would get realy cold sitting down eating/chatting/watching TV.

Being cold is miserable. J would be cold at 20, and wouldn't warm up until 25

How much was your heating bill last month, out of curiosity?

Just because a bit of technology claims that somewhere in your house is a certain temperature, doesn’t mean that’s what it feels like everywhere in the house. In my living room, there are warm places (my seat, next to the radiator, away from the door) and not so warm places (DH’s seat, further away from the radiator, in a draft from the door to the hall). Rooms at the front of the house are warmer than the rooms at the back, whatever the thermostat pretends.

Very good point. Our front room downstairs gets nice and toasty if the door is closed / ajar. The kitchen is freezing whatever you do.

CoastalCalm · 17/01/2026 22:25

Where is your thermostat ? In ours ours is above a radiator in the hallway so it can read 21 in there but in the back of the house feel really rather chilly due to large expanse of glass

The most my house ever gets to with the heating on is 19 & I think it’s reasonable. I couldn’t sit in a t-shirt but it’s not uncomfortable at that temperature.

Glad I’m not the only one! We can’t get ours over 18, we’ve tried everything!

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 17/01/2026 22:30

20 is cold to me personally.

Astra53 · 17/01/2026 22:30

My MiL makes an Olympic sport out of keeping her house cold. Heats one room to a stifling fug and the rest of the house is icy cold. We normally have our temperature on between 20 and 22. This feels like the tropics in comparison!!

Butterbean21 · 17/01/2026 22:31

Your house was clearly cold and its a bit miserable to sit in. I have one friend who is such an amazing cook and loves to host but I cant stand going to her house because I just cannot get a heat. Its laminate flooring and open plan, lovely fire that has never ever been lit and the heating is never on. Even with a wool jumper and fleece jacket and slippers I was chilled to the very bone and just wanted to get home to my blanket.
I totally get it because when you are busy hosting you are busy cooking and it gets hot but if your friends put their jackets back on you need to readjust thermometer.

Time2beme · 17/01/2026 22:32

Our house is never over 20 degrees, we do have blankets, heated blankets oodies etc available on the backs of sofas etc and I check in with Guests who are older or more vulnerable.

GiddyRobin · 17/01/2026 22:34

Why on earth didn't you just ask if they were chilly, and if they'd like you to crank the heating up a bit more?

We live in a cottage with oil fired heating which isn't massively warm, so always have the fire and log burners lit/Aga on in the winter. I always leave out blankets and throws for guests and offer a hot water bottle even when I think it's warm, I don't want someone sitting there freezing out of politeness.

Some people won't say if they're cold. They wait for the host to pick up hints.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 17/01/2026 22:01

They would be baltic in my house then. Only have the heating on 18 degrees 😂

Seriously though; 20 degrees is generally shorts and t-shirt weather outside right?! It’s a bit odd they were so cold unless they are sickening for something

these threads make me laugh. I dream of 20 degrees. We live in a 200 year old house and standard temperature at this time of year is 13 - it gets to 16 if the heating is on about 8 hours 🙈. We do have a log burner so end up with one room much hotter which then makes going out of that one room even more of a shock.

JLou08 · 17/01/2026 22:38

Had they been out in the cold long? It can take me a long time to warm back up, sometimes takes a hot shower to do it no matter how high the heating is on.

Womaninhouse17 · 17/01/2026 22:40

I'm fine at 20 but not if there's a draft or if I have cold feet.

Womaninhouse17 · 17/01/2026 22:43

It's not a good idea to have the thermostat above a radiator!

Sertraleen · 17/01/2026 22:43

Since I've been on sertraline I’m boiling constantly. I don’t know if that’s a thing,
generally? My heating never goes above 18 and I’m too hot all the time, summer was absolute hell.

I’m not suggesting you give your guests sertraline.

Queenoftartts · 17/01/2026 22:43

In a hotel room 20 would be boiling for me but our house is quite drafty I'm sat right now with the heating on 22°c with a fleece on. But if you're moving around a lot and everyone else is sitting down they won't feel as warm. I have sat in restaurants with my coat on because there's no heating on. 😂😂😂 Hate being cold.

Shedeboodinia · 17/01/2026 22:47

I like it hot. 25 degrees is default in my house.
20 requires extra layers.
Why didnt you turn the dial up a few degrees if all of your guests were cold?

Mumstheword1983 · 17/01/2026 22:47

They would hate my house. I have it on 19 constantly 🤣

RaininSummer · 17/01/2026 22:48

I would feel ill at 25 degrees. Usually heat to 19 or 20 but wouldn't expect to sit about in t shirt in January.

Girlking · 17/01/2026 22:49

Just checked my thermostat and it’s set at 29 degrees!

everardshutthatdoor · 17/01/2026 22:50

It might not be the temperature OP, it might be that they were sitting in a draught. That can make you feel cool even if the temperature is OK. Also damp in the air can make you feel cold.

Hogwartsian · 17/01/2026 22:51

Lol they'd freeze in my house. I have the temperature at 16 degrees. I sit under an electric throw so I'm never cold, plus I wear thick jumpers and leggings.

Mumstheword1983 · 17/01/2026 22:52

Ibiza.

NotDarkGothicMama · 17/01/2026 22:53

Maybe they needed defrosting? I have the heating set to 19 in the evenings, but if it's a really cold day and we've spent a lot of time outside I crank it up for when we get in.
