Should you be told if the meat you're served is halal?

If you go to a restaurant or cafe or cafeteria at work or whatever. Would you expect to be informed that they were serving halal meat?

Which leaves 12% of halal slaughter circulating in the food chain and no way of the customer knowing whether they're eating it.

I have zero issue with halal meat but I really can’t understand why when some people need to know it is and some people need to know it isn’t why is it not all labelled

Why do the non label people feel it needs to be a secret? To me this just fuels the fire of division.

Except that the 12% has to be done in specifically FSA licensed slaughterhouse with approval for non-stun slaughter under very strict protocols. Including that it has to be intended for the Muslim community. So unless you are buying meat from a halal butcher, this isn't really happening.

And that makes animal cruelty okay does it?

If it was properly labelled meat consumption would bomb!

No, they're trying to have non-stun slaughter banned. They acknowledge that 88% of halal slaughter in the UK is pre-stunned.

It’s ’religious slaughter’ because by law all meat has to be pre stunned unless it comes under religious exemption. The only reason why it’s not stunned is because of religion. So it’s religious slaughter

notnorman · 17/01/2026 11:47

Also… some places are using recoverable stun. So they can say they’re ‘stunned’ but the animal comes round enough to hear the prayer before it’s throat is slit.

it takes a cow 12 minutes to bleed out, unstunned.

People seem to want clarity and care taken when not Halal but if it is for religious reasons then it should be the opposite. No clear labelling and working against the RSPCA.

I dont eat a lot of meat but if i do, its bought locally and i know where its from. I do a lot of my own cooking and i keep chickens and have my own supply of eggs. I absolutely loathe the fact people buy eggs from caged hens.

I would like to see on the menu (or in the restaurant website) whether their eggs are free range, whether their meat is free range/organic, and where their fish is sourced from. Obviously halal information is useful for people who need to follow that diet.

That would be fab to see. A lot of catering outlets will (unknowingly) be buying Ukrainian egg at the moment. They can produce it much cheaper than we can (mainly because they bought a lot of our old cage kit when enriched cages came in and use the stuff that’s illegal for us to use here in the UK.

Our local butcher says he wants nothing to do with that nonsense - if it was clearly labelled halal lots of abattoirs would go bust!

Why on earth have you revived a zombie thread to post the exact same thing you already posted on this thread two weeks ago?
