Should you be told if the meat you're served is halal?

If you go to a restaurant or cafe or cafeteria at work or whatever. Would you expect to be informed that they were serving halal meat?

Has never really occurred to me and I’ve not often seen it highlighted on a menu so no, I don’t think there’s a rule about it. Not sure what you’re wanting to do really - isn’t it just a question about if it’s a rule to Inform people wherever you live?

Morally relevant to Muslims perhaps

but to none Muslims the only moral I can think of is racism

Edited

Well with about half the population being Christian and adding to that everyone of other non-Islam religions, I would think it would be morally relevant to most people. Probably everyone but the atheists? If you are a believer in a certain religion, I can't imagine it being OK to eat food that has been blessed into another opposing religion. It's a religious act and an act of worship to a God you believe to be false.

Atheists have morals too

I really don't care and I do think it would be unreasonable to make this a requirement.

You're right of course, I was typing with distractions and more countering the point about it only being relevant to Muslims.

I think everyone should be bothered since there is no guarantee the meat is stunned.

ronnip · 13/01/2026 19:32

No

YellowPixie · 13/01/2026 19:33

I don't care if it's halal or not halal. I wouldn't go out of my way to ask.

Surely a prayer to a god you believe to be false are by dint of that just words?

I thought christians, jews and muslims all worshipped the same god?

Imaginary86 · 13/01/2026 19:38

I don’t want to eat halal meat and wouldn’t eat somewhere I know it is served.

Nincompoo · 13/01/2026 19:42

Not all halal meat is stunned before It is killed, so which is barbaric and I’d like to avoid that if possible but it’s impossible to know as meat isn’t labelled.

Most meat we buy from supermarkets is halal.

climbintheback · 13/01/2026 19:43

I asked our local butcher - probably the furthest butcher in the SW - he said he wanted nothing to do with that nonsense - his meat is local and butchered locally thank God - but if you search online you can fat halal free delivered to your door - fuck the lying cheating supermarkets!

You'll be extremely limited on venues then! Most restaurants and takeaways use halal meat.

No, I don’t need to know.

Im a Christian, it has no moral relevance for me. I don't care what my meat was listening to when it died.

Local butchers for local people!

Despite the ignorance from some posters, this is an interesting thread.

I’ve learnt a few things today. I did know that most meat in restaurants and takeaways is halal anyway, and I have no issue with that.

I’ve been buying Dutch halal chicken from the Chinese wholesaler in my town for 25yrs. It’s the cheapest lowest grade chicken you can buy in the store.

No one has ever asked or complained about it when I’ve used it to cater large gatherings. It’s full of water and the chickens have probably never seen the light of day. Would never buy it for a family meal!

So the fact people on here think that it’s ironic the flag shaggers are eating it is pretty grim all round.

unicornpower · 13/01/2026 20:13

Yes you absolutely should be informed!

MayaPinion · 13/01/2026 20:14

I eat meat. It’s a bit late to be worrying about the ethics of it - halal or not. Meat is meat. It’s dead flesh. Eat it or don’t, but all this pearl clutching about halal is extremely naive or rage baiting.

At least half of that half is only nominally Christian. The churches are not bursting at the seams these days. The local kebab shop and curry houses on the other hand, are bursting at the seams at the weekend.

There is a difference between an animal hoisted up by its back legs and slaughtered after being stunned than one hauled up and it’s throat slit to bleed slowly to death without being stunned!

Soontobe60 · 13/01/2026 20:24

Branster · 13/01/2026 13:41

I think it should be made clear in a restaurant setting.
I would like to know so as to avoid it.
However, I suspect a lot of meat in the UK is halal meat but I don't know how you'd find out without asking. And would you get a truthful answer?
In all honesty, it never crossed my mind to ask this question in a restaurant, I just assumed it is not halal meat.
It should be banned.

Why?

Yes - in your first example not all the animals are successfully stunned and in the second the animals loose consciousness in seconds. Either way, animals are always bred then killed artificially for their consumption by humans.

I do know this. If I wanted to go to Nando’s for example you can check online to see which restaurants served halal or not. There are 80 Uk stores that serve halal meat

Imaginary86 · 13/01/2026 20:37

Scrowy · 13/01/2026 19:48

Why?

Because I don’t. Simple as that 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m not sure why I would have to explain my dietary choices to you. You wouldn’t ask a Muslim why they won’t eat non halal meat
