Should you be told if the meat you're served is halal?

If you go to a restaurant or cafe or cafeteria at work or whatever. Would you expect to be informed that they were serving halal meat?

If it’s important to someone, they should ask. How far are we outsourcing our personal responsibility these days?

Reading this thread do you honestly think that if you did ask as you genuinely did not want to eat halal meat that you would not be in fear of being labelled a bigot or being reported to HR?

Thats is probably easier to eat the vegetarian option ( if it’s not Kosher) or bring your own sandwich.

Maddy70 · 13/01/2026 23:05

No. I wouldn't expect them to tell me they were free range eggs etc either. If you think traditional abattoir killings are more humane then you are mistaken.

The only way to ensure that is ti become vegetarian otherwise it's rather hypocritical to say one is more cruel than the other

I'm am atheist so believe that prayers are just meaningless words and I couldn't care less what prayers are said when. But if you are religious and do believe that prayers have meaning then does it matter to you if prayers of a different religion are said over the meat you eat? From this thread it appears to matter to Sikhs, but do say Catholics care?

Catholics don't care. We eat all the meats.😁

Yes and bless you @climbintheback.🙏😇

ffsnewusername · 13/01/2026 23:31

Yes 100%. I find it shocking that it’s even allowed.

Oneforallandallforone · 13/01/2026 23:35

Yes I'd like to know. It never occurred to me to ask as it never dawned on me it might be halal.

eurotravel · 13/01/2026 23:59

Yes as it’s important to so many. But the idea that ‘non halal’ slaughter is more humane is a bit weak having worked in those places

SouthernNights59 · 14/01/2026 00:05

No, why does it matter?

Because the majority of halal meat is from animals that are stunned so if I unknowingly eat halal, the odds are it was stunned. Kosher never is, so to me it feels like no one is even trying to improve things there in the same way it has more broadly been addressed for halal. And whilst I have seen both standard and halal slaughter and did not consider them to inherently different because consciousness was lost so quickly, ideally I would like all animals to be stunned before slaughter because rationally, it must be more humane.

My post was a bit ambiguously phrased, I can see that now. My main point is that I don't care about prayers, I disbelieve in all gods equally. And how the animal is looked after in life is more critical to me than the seconds around it's death.

Not sure how clearly I am explaining myself! It makes sense in my head!

Thank you for replying @JudyMoncada - that's very clear and makes perfect sense!

I'm undecided about this one because, though I agree with you re. how the animal is looked after in life being more critical to me than the seconds around its death, I'm not yet completely convinced that a pre-stunned animal in the average slaughter house necessarily suffers less than one slaughtered correctly by a shochet (kosher slaughterer) who has to go through rigorous training. There are many variables, I suppose...

Tadpolesinponds · 14/01/2026 00:54

Apparently the meat you're served in Indian restaurants is usually Halal. We've probably all eaten loads of it without thinking about it.

Sugarpopsicle · 14/01/2026 01:29

Yes.

Scrowy · 13/01/2026 22:42

Why though? What are your objections?

I’ve looked into it quite a bit and I have lots of objections. If a cow isn’t stunned it takes 12 minutes to bleed out, alive.
the animals are hung upside down before having their throats cut. The blood pools to their head/neck and then when they have their throats cut the blood can make them choke and suffocate.
if a product is certified Halal then the consumer is paying extra money - I think it’s 2.5% but feel free to correct me.

Ive gone down a bit of a rabbit hole - and the whole thing has appalled me so much I’m going to eat mostly vegetarian and a small amount of chicken from my local butcher who owns his own small slaughterhouse and is totally committed to animal welfare- as much as a butcher can be

Bootlegg · 14/01/2026 06:49

It's surprised me how much halal meat is widespread in the UK because Muslims are a small minority in the UK I didn't expect that most of our meat will be to Muslim standards.

It’s banned in many countries including Denmark, Norway, Iceland,Greece

Branleuse · 14/01/2026 09:55

I think most fast food places use halal.

I wouldn't expect to be explicitly told, but there's usually a logo on the menu at the bottom.
It really makes no difference to the animal though

It definitely does make a difference to the animal. They’re bleeding out whilst still conscious while ‘listening’ to a call to prayer type sound over speakers.

summertime94 · 14/01/2026 10:02

Yes because I would avoid it

Reported to HR 😂

Marylou2 · 14/01/2026 10:07

It should be clearly labelled on all raw meat, ready meals and menus.

Religious slaughter/Halal

bluelizy · 14/01/2026 10:19

Do the halal label people also want all their meat labeled per type of death? I'm guessing its just the muslim meat

Did it make you muslim???

elgreco · 14/01/2026 10:21

I would question if the halal meat in Britain is really halal.
Some websites say that the animals must be slaughtered by an adult Muslim. Others sites just mention the prayers.
There doesn't seem to be a consensus.
