Oh I saw some of those texts. They were ladling on the flattery... in an OTT way that was actually taking the piss out of him.

Anyone with self-awareness would have felt insulted to receive such texts; Trump, of course, would lap them up.

Somehow I don't think it's how the leaders talk about him amongst themselves.

It looks like their combined strategy has been to keep Trump all buttered up, then say No when it matters.

I find Newsome very annoying in this. It was Americans who voted him in. It was also American politicians in the republican and democratic party who let things deteriorate to the state where he was elected. It's Republicans and Democrats letting him get away with it right now. The democrats have been incredibly spineless.

I agree that appeasement won't work for Trump. But you can't blame other leaders for trying that first. It isnt their job to fulfill American's vicarious need for "someone to stand up to him", it's their job to secure the best situation for their own citizens (and allies) in difficult times. "Standing up to him" should be primarily Americans jobs as it's their democracy. Only they can save it

I just find his holier than thou speech irritating,.and it feels written for home consumption rather than the people at DAVOS. Carney was.much better at summing up the situation in a non oily way.

I must admit that when I heard Newsoms comments I wanted to yell so what are US politicians doing and if not now what's the point of the 2nd amendment.

Trump has always very actively used divide and rule – even among his own staff. He sets people against each other so no individual gains enough following to lead a team against him. Presumably it's one reason his businesses are such failures.

I'm ashamed of Starmer, still won't speak out and too scared to attend DAVROS. Wish we had someone like Mark Carney, we're losing Europe's support to snuggle up with a madman

Sky News has a piece today about Starmer, and how he was supposed to be out and about doing UK cost of living stuff. I honestly don't blame Starmer for not going to Davos. Trump is an energy vampire. He sucks up every resource, every milli-watt of energy he can, to make it about him.

People do have other things they are supposed to be doing.

I am no fan of Starmer. He should be doing domestic stuff too. And Reform can't be brushed aside. I am behind Starmer on anything he does to keep them from power.

I was just thinking. What energy sapping ploy will Trump be on next week ? The Falklands perhaps ? Pick a fight with Japan? No idea, but it will be something. He appears to be scared of taking on China. I fully expect him to start on Taiwan soon. That perhaps they should be part of the PRC etc.
