Back on US soil, an American citizen in a peaceful neighbourhood is gunned down by masked agents sent there to make people afraid.

Despicable, wretched people lying, lying, lying - all day, every day, about everything.

Glad you say whisky and not whiskey :-)

I am happy to join our Canadian cousins and not have US booze.

And yes, I know Irish has the "e" :-)

I think the rule-of-thumb used to be that if the country-of-origin has no E in the name then the drink doesn't either.

So Scotland: no e, whisky.
Japan: no e, whisky.
Canada: no e, whisky.

Ireland: e, whiskey.
America: e, whiskey.

But this doesn't work for England and Wales, which have an e but spell it whisky. They just used not to produce the stuff in sufficient quantity to be noticed.

Yes but is it the Protestant whiskey, Bushmills, or the Catholic whiskey Jameson's?

I've watched all series of The Wire ;-)

England ? You mean Albion surely 😉

Isn't Albion also Wales and Scotland though? Although actually it does still work for the spelling whisky thing.

Apparently the Ford worker who heckled Trump during his factory visit was fired by the company. However, in response a GoFundMe was set up and has now raised $300,000 and counting, made up mostly of $10 donations.

I am learning (thanks to Rex Factor) that Scotland is also "Alpa" ? (Hence Kenneth MacAlpin)

Wales is of course Cymru ...

So standing up to Trump pays.

Someone has lost control of the narrative.

I think Scotland was Alba, Latinised to Albania, which is simply CONFUSING.

However, Albion does work for the whisky thing, so thank-you persephonia.

Following Sky news on the Greenland meet. Couple of polls out. Very low support in the US, but this from a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

"One in five people in the US had not heard of the plans to acquire Greenland. "

Will Trump be banging the Resolute desk - " THEY SOON WILL, BIGLEY"

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/01/2026 17:16

There is something rather horrible about Trump even having access to the Resolute desk.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/01/2026 17:17

Can somebody please put a bottle of Everclear 190 on the drinks tray? We have 3 more years of this to get through.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/01/2026 17:22

Just make sure it has explicit fire warnings on it, please.

The whole island was called Albion because, according to ancient legend, the first human settlers in Albion (some Syrian princesses exiled for trying to kill their husbands) washed up on the shores of a strange mist covered land rich with forests and empty of people. The eldest sister was called Albiana and she named the land after herself. They then learned to hunt and this led them to have sex with demons/spirits and give birth to the first of the giants.
There are other stories about how Albion got it's name and where the first giants came from. But this version is at least 850 years old and it's my favourite.

persephonia · 14/01/2026 17:25

Alba is just another variation on the name.

placemats · 14/01/2026 17:35

And people wonder what it means to be English? 😂

YankTank · 14/01/2026 17:39

This thread moves too fast. Have we mentioned the leak of names of ICE agents? Oh dear—there’s quite a venn diagram with J6ers.

If I was looking for an ICE agent, I would start with the J6ers and work forwards.

Not the one Trump pardoned and was shot dead by cops on a traffic stop though. That one was overkeen to use his guns.

Couldn’t add this image to my post above, but perhaps the MAGA “Christians” might like to take a long hard look at themselves

Has anyone worked out yet how SCOTUS will nobble the 2nd ?

That's easy. Just say it only applies to Muskets and flintlocks.

They already ignore the well regulated militia bit.

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/01/2026 18:07

This really is the time for the well armed militia to shine but they all seem to have joined the wrong side.

I feel there's space for a well timed joke about famous King of Denmark, King Cnut. Sadly am too dispirited to think of one. Women of Mumsnet, do your best 🤔
