is this strange or quite commonplace?

hello, so today i was sitting in bed with my granny because we wanted to watch something my grandpa and mum didn't so we decided to sit in the bedroom and watch it so we were all happy. my mum came in and noticed our handbags between us in the bed and said it's strange to carry a handbag from room to room never mind having it beside you in bed, you two are the only 2 i've ever knew to do that. granted i've always been very close to my grandparents and we both have a multitude of health issues so i think that's why, but i think it's quite clever to have everything you need organised and right to hand. my mum only uses a very small handbag and hangs it on a hook when she gets home where it stays until the next day , and quite often she will just take her card and phone if she's just quickly nipping out, to me that's more strange… just wondering what other people do (i know it's a boring question but i'm curiousGrin)

I used to do this when I was in my early 20s and was out and about more, visiting friends, staying over at others houses etc.

mindutopia · 07/01/2026 16:24

Mine has lived in my unlocked car for the past 10 years. Never even come in the house. 😂

for clarification, i always faithfully have my painkillers/pill box, makeup for refreshing (lip liner, lipstick, lip gloss and eyebrow pencil), perfume, cigarettes and lighter, vape and spare pod, hairbrush, keys, purse (sometimes have to spontaneously order something for gran) mints and earphones, sometimes more if i'm doing something i need other things for. reading this back i must put a pen in my bag too...maybe should have mentioned in my first post i use a walking stick but i was half sleeping when posting and thought i did🙈it's just something i've always done since i've had my 1st handbag a long number of years ago at 12.
@WinterWooliesBaa i appreciate this every day, my grandad is the only grandad i had and i lost my other grandma years ago. i hope i have them for years to come, they are my heart and my reason to get up out of bed in the morning🙏🏼🥰

Ok, given you use a walking stick I think it’s less weird, as you’re probably not mobile enough to just get up and get your lip balm, vape etc from wherever you left your handbag.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 07/01/2026 16:49

My grandmother carried her handbag everywhere with her, from age 50 when I would have first been aware of it.

AquaShark · 07/01/2026 17:17

I'm like your mum. I hang my hangbag up when i get home. I take my phone out and carry that around the house.
Other stuff that would be in my bag (tissues, lip balm etc) i have copies of in most rooms in my house anyway.
Different if i was visiting someone else's house (incl family). Then i would carry my bag around with me.

tinyspiny · 07/01/2026 17:19

My handbag lives in the kitchen when not being used , my phone never leaves my side .

JohnTheRevelator · 07/01/2026 17:23

I put my handbag on the coat hooks in the hallway as soon I get indoors and it stays there until I go out again. I never take it around the house with me. My phone is in the holder I have on the wall next to the charger while I'm indoors.

50NotFat · 07/01/2026 17:29

My mother used to take her bag everywhere with her. It would go by her side of the bed at night time. I have several handbags but rarely use the same one for more than a few days at a time. And then I usually have no idea where I’ve left it!

huuskymam · 07/01/2026 17:47

I leave my bag down the side of a couch in an alcove when I'm at home. When I'm in a family members it's usually left by a chair or couch, I definitely wouldn't bring it around the rooms.

RosePippi · 07/01/2026 18:15

Slightly odd to have it on the bed yes but each to their own.

I was only posting as I wanted to say how lovely it is you get into bed with your grandmother. I’m not a grandmother yet but when I am I hope my children and grandchildren get into bed and snuggle with me watching a film. You’re never too old to snuggle your parents/grandparents

TheeNotoriousPIG · 07/01/2026 18:16

I don't own a handbag, but I have a basket of Useful Things by the bed. This means ibuprofen, the book(s) that I am reading at the time, various knitting projects, cable needles, other sized needles, my purse and sometimes emergency snacks!

You two sound adorable, in bed with your handbags 💕

Nevermind17 · 07/01/2026 22:52

I’m the same as you, OP. All my crap is in my bag and I take it round the house with me. I have mobility problems so it’s much easier if I have all my most used items on me at all times (including my medication).

BusterGonad · 07/01/2026 23:27

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 07/01/2026 14:14

Do you keep all your full stops in it?

😂

Ohpleeeease · 07/01/2026 23:34

I’m weird then, because my handbag goes everywhere I do except the bathroom. It’s beside the bed as I type this.

But then I am the person everyone comes to for scissors, pens, shoppping bags, nail clippers, tissues, you get the picture.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 07/01/2026 16:18

My late mum always used to keep her handbag by the side of the bed. She never told me why, and it never occurred to me to ask.

DM always used to say you should take your handbag to the bedroom at night in case the house got burgled. Sensible advice really, I think. She didn't carry it around from room to room though.

thishouseisashittip · 07/01/2026 23:50

I don't even have a handbag 😂

Dollyfloss · 07/01/2026 23:56

You carry your handbag wherever you want to lovely! It is probably something more attributed to older people but if you’re disabled and need to carry your stuff around it makes complete sense.

If I’m going to be burgled in the night I’d rather they found everything they wanted downstairs and not bother to get anywhere near me .

AncientBallerina · 07/01/2026 23:58

I don’t know but you and your granny in bed with your handbags watching TV sounds just adorable

Zov · 08/01/2026 00:00

My nan used to do this - back in the 1970s when I was a kid! (She was born in the 1910s.) Never seen anyone do it since then!!!
