is this strange or quite commonplace?

hello, so today i was sitting in bed with my granny because we wanted to watch something my grandpa and mum didn't so we decided to sit in the bedroom and watch it so we were all happy. my mum came in and noticed our handbags between us in the bed and said it's strange to carry a handbag from room to room never mind having it beside you in bed, you two are the only 2 i've ever knew to do that. granted i've always been very close to my grandparents and we both have a multitude of health issues so i think that's why, but i think it's quite clever to have everything you need organised and right to hand. my mum only uses a very small handbag and hangs it on a hook when she gets home where it stays until the next day , and quite often she will just take her card and phone if she's just quickly nipping out, to me that's more strange… just wondering what other people do (i know it's a boring question but i'm curiousGrin)

My mum does this and it drives me mental, especially as she’s now got dementia and spends ages looking for her bag….

BeardedBarley · 09/01/2026 09:27

My mum used to take her handbag up to bed with her. It’s quite an old lady thing to do. In her defence, she liked cash, so there was usually about £1000 in there 🤷‍♀️

I’ve pretty much stopped using a handbag. I just take my phone out and about.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/01/2026 09:27

My mum (who would have been 95 has she still been with us) used to follow me around asking 'but where is your handbag! You should always know where your handbag is!'

Blew her mind that I didn't HAVE a handbag and carried everything in my pockets. She was obsessed with the whereabouts of her handbag, all her life. She basically had to be within sight and preferably touching distance of it.

Hate handbags. Never use them.

melamny · 09/01/2026 10:45

I didn't used to do this, however when I got sick with ME/CFS and was finding ways to minimise my energy use, I made up a bag that I could take from room to room. If I needed lip balm, moisturiser, eye drops, purse, tissues etc. they were right beside me and if I wanted to move from the bed to the sofa or vice versa I didn't have to think about what I needed but could just grab the bag.

Since getting somewhat better, I still take my bag around the house with me if I'm staying in one place for a while, as it's habit now and I should probably still watch my energy use!

RightOnTheEdge · 09/01/2026 10:52

I very rarely use a handbag. I just grab my phone and keys and shove them in my pockets.
I only use a handbag on rare nights out or sometimes in summer if I have no pockets.

If I'm going out somewhere for a day out with the kids I will take a small backpack though.

DM always used to say you should take your handbag to the bedroom at night in case the house got burgled. Sensible advice really, I think. She didn't carry it around from room to room though.

That is terrible advice. If you're in the house when it gets burgled you want the criminals to get the stuff leave not be prowling around upstairs while you sleep looking for your purse that's just a way to escalate the situation

In this day and age, most people never have any cash, so I doubt very much they would be looking for a purse! Do you personally know anyone who has been burgled while they were in the house and the burglers ventured upstairs?

My friend got burgled a few years ago and they just grabbed what they could from downstairs and left. They didn't chance going upstairs.

My handbag is slung in my bedroom after taking out my phone. Other than than keys I don’t need it for anything else. Are you worried someone will steal something from there ?

This thread has made me realise that I don't think any of my bags have ever been upstairs in my house. Maybe I should take them on a special trip...

Yes my grandparents. The police officer advised my nan to leave her handbag downstairs in future as the burglar was standing next to their bed literally holding my nans handbag at the time my grandfather woke up.

It was assumed that due to it being the home of older people the burglar had (correctly) assumed there would be cash in the house.

Imgoingtobefree · 09/01/2026 14:53

I have an Indoor Handbag.

Currently has my medication, spare glasses, phone, tissues, gum, pens, nail file, lip balm, hand cream, tape measure and torch (for power cuts - just had a spate of them).

Im getting on, so it saves getting up when I’ve got settled and I’m forever forgetting where I last left my pen, lip balm etc.

It developed from when I started keeping a small bag with me when I was out in the garden eg phone, bug spray, sun cream etc.

ItsameLuigi · 09/01/2026 15:52

My bag always stays on the coat rack by the door just because I have "bag items" like lip balm etc and then I have more around the house. I like to keep it separated because I will forget to put it back and then end up needing something when I'm out lol. But everyone is different and that's what I love about this site seeing how other ppl function/live.

I am so sorry to hear this. Very frightening for them. I guess it varies depending on the circumstances. DM didn't keep very much money in her purse. She used to leave most of her money in numerous random places throughout her home, so if one lot got taken, she had other stashes elsewhere!

SlippySausage · 09/01/2026 18:29

I don't take my handbag with me around the house but I might start after reading this. I spend a lot of time every day running around the house trying to find the things I need to put in my handbag when I take it out. Then, when at home, fI spend a lot of time running back and forth to my handbag (left in hall) getting things out of it that I need. It would be a lot more efficient just to take my handbag from room to room with me. So I started thinking your way of doing things is strange, but now I'm going to do it too!

FKAT · 09/01/2026 21:30

Conversely I've been burgled while I've been in the house on two occasions and they never entered my bedroom or anyone else's. Most burglars don't want confrontation or to be caught. If they are going in your bedroom you probably have more to worry about than your purse being taken.

If I’m going to be burgled in the night I’d rather they found everything they wanted downstairs and not bother to get anywhere near me .

That’s my attitude too. I value my safety over my belongings.

Edited

It’s happened to friend of mine. Admittedly his house has semi unusual layout and he thought the burglar didn’t realise it was his bedroom but it was a frightening encounter and I’d rather a potential burglar had as little reason to explore further into my house as possible

wotsitallfor · 09/01/2026 22:35

My late Mum had to have her bag beside her and fretted when it wasn’t. We buried her with it as she’d not be at rest without it

dogsarebetterthanppl · 10/01/2026 19:00

i honestly couldnt be without my handbag(s) i have a multitude and feel naked on the extremely rare occasion i don't have one with me (popping to neighbours for something etc).
