is this strange or quite commonplace?

hello, so today i was sitting in bed with my granny because we wanted to watch something my grandpa and mum didn't so we decided to sit in the bedroom and watch it so we were all happy. my mum came in and noticed our handbags between us in the bed and said it's strange to carry a handbag from room to room never mind having it beside you in bed, you two are the only 2 i've ever knew to do that. granted i've always been very close to my grandparents and we both have a multitude of health issues so i think that's why, but i think it's quite clever to have everything you need organised and right to hand. my mum only uses a very small handbag and hangs it on a hook when she gets home where it stays until the next day , and quite often she will just take her card and phone if she's just quickly nipping out, to me that's more strange… just wondering what other people do (i know it's a boring question but i'm curiousGrin)

My nan used to do this - back in the 1970s when I was a kid! (She was born in the 1910s.) Never seen anyone do it since then!!!

Deadringer · 08/01/2026 00:05

I keep my handbag beside the bed, though tbf I don't use it much.

FKAT · 08/01/2026 00:13

I take my bag upstairs when I go to bed. Reason is that houses get broken into and the nearer something is to the door, the likelier it is to get nicked. I know people who have had car and house keys snatched from their hall table or coat rack or kitchen table. I feel better my handbag - with keys, purse, cards, phone, make up - is upstairs by me.

If I’m going to be burgled in the night I’d rather they found everything they wanted downstairs and not bother to get anywhere near me .

The thought behind it was that if burglars got in, they would just grab what they could from downstairs and not bother going upstairs in case they disturbed the occupants.

thanks so much for all the nice comments🙏🏼if i could clone my beautiful granny i would have 10,000 of her, she's my world and perfect in every way🥰she's like a second mother and we know each other inside out and tell each other things we've never said out loud before. my grandad might be my grandad by blood but by heart he is my father, they've always made sure i wanted for nothing even when they struggled themselves. i was never one for going out to play as a kid, i just wanted to be with them and they love me and all my many faults unconditionally (although they always tell me the unabridged truth when i need to hear it especially grandadGrin) they have every quality a good person needs. granny and me are all the frills and mum is no frills so maybe that's itGrini always carried my bag before i fell ill, now it's necessary but previously it was because granny did and i think she's the bees knees lol

This is so lovely 🩷

My mother, 90s, does this. Her handbag follows her around the house. I put mine in the coat cupboard as soon as I come in.

SpringIsComingSoonFolks · 08/01/2026 08:12

It’s lovely that you are so close to your grandparents OP ☺️

I’m weird then, because my handbag goes everywhere I do except the bathroom. It’s beside the bed as I type this.

But then I am the person everyone comes to for scissors, pens, shoppping bags, nail clippers, tissues, you get the picture.

I don't get it. If you're in your own house surely you'd direct anyone asking to wherever these things are kept, not hand them e.g. scissors from your bag

In my own house yes, but I’m the queen of being prepared for every eventuality. I once produced an emergency sewing kit for a colleague who’d split her skirt.

DH calls my bag the Mary Poppins.

Friendlygingercat · 08/01/2026 15:55

The reason some older people have their handbag with them is because they lived through the last war and there was always the risk of a bomb falling in the night. In that case you would need your ID documents, money and most important things with you at all times. At least that was what my grandmother told me. They may also have passed on the habit to their children to always keep their valuables with them.

When I lived with my parents money was once stolen from my drawer. Therafter I very pointedly kept it in my bag which I carried around with me from room to room. I put it beneath my pillow at night.

Nowadays I dont need to carry anything around with me and I have never got into the habit of carrying a phone about. So I can always truthfully say I missed your call because the phone was in my bag/drawer/another room or on charge.

Cantreachthefatscrubs · 09/01/2026 07:43

I have my bag downstairs when I am and in my bedroom overnight or if I’m showering, plus the obvious taking out with me. I have lip balm, purse, inhaler, nail file etc that I wouldn’t be able to find if I had them in the house loose

3luckystars · 09/01/2026 07:47

I leave my bag in the car, I don’t even bring it into the house. I admit, I’m not into bags, they are just a hassle and I can’t imagine ever wanting one with me on my lap as I watch a film unless I was out at the cinema.

Why complicate things?

I’m the total opposite to this and would leave keys beside the door. If someone breaks in, take the keys and get out. I don’t want them wandering around the house while I’m asleep.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 09/01/2026 07:51

Mine lives in my bedroom at all times when I'm at home. I take my phone out of it and then put the bag in a storage bag/basket which is on the bedroom floor. I suspect it's habit from having lived in university halls and shared houses where I'd never have left my bag in a communal room. .

StrawberryJangle · 09/01/2026 07:57

Occasionally I'll take a bag out with me, but if I'm going shopping for example - phone and card in pocket, reusable shopping bag in hand. Oh and door key in pocket.

I used to have a little rucksack with my sarnies in for work and tampons if needed but it certainly never came to bed with me.

But why don't all of those things just have their own place in your house, rather than people having to come and ask you to take them out of your bag? I mean, wouldn't it be easier if the shopping bags had their place in a cupboard and the tissues lived in the bathroom or wherever?

My bags (mostly backpacks, satchels or crossbody bags, as I walk everywhere) live in a cupboard inside the front door. I take out my phone, airpods, and Kindle when I get home. Everything else just waits in there till I'm going out again.

I get why it works for the OP if she uses a stick, though.

I'm that person too but those things all have their place in the home, not my handbag.

theemmadilemma · 09/01/2026 08:53

When I had a bag it would sit down the side of the sofa next to me, in case I needed anything in it.

But since moving to phone payment, I rarely take a bag. Phone and keys is generally all I need.

Mxflamingnoravera · 09/01/2026 08:58

I had my bag stolen from my kitchen in a break in to my home years ago. As a result it is always next to my bed at night. A habit of over 30 years. My phone, wallet and medications are in my bag. I often need it when I’m home and even in bed. So I see nothing odd about having bags in the bedroom. It’s the safest place.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 09/01/2026 09:08

I’d find it notable. But then I don’t use a handbag at all. It’s probably quite smart to keep it with you to prevent opportunist theft but I wouldn’t put it on the bed as I’d consider a handbag dirty.

BooneyBeautiful · 07/01/2026 23:43

DM always used to say you should take your handbag to the bedroom at night in case the house got burgled. Sensible advice really, I think. She didn't carry it around from room to room though.

My mum has always done this too! I does make sense, but somehow I never remember to do it myself!

cramptramp · 09/01/2026 09:23

I take mine up to bed with me. This was police advice to a friend who was burgled when they were asleep upstairs. Having your purse with all your cards (if you still use cards, I do) in it in your bedroom means it can’t be picked up by a burglar.
