is this strange or quite commonplace?

hello, so today i was sitting in bed with my granny because we wanted to watch something my grandpa and mum didn't so we decided to sit in the bedroom and watch it so we were all happy. my mum came in and noticed our handbags between us in the bed and said it's strange to carry a handbag from room to room never mind having it beside you in bed, you two are the only 2 i've ever knew to do that. granted i've always been very close to my grandparents and we both have a multitude of health issues so i think that's why, but i think it's quite clever to have everything you need organised and right to hand. my mum only uses a very small handbag and hangs it on a hook when she gets home where it stays until the next day , and quite often she will just take her card and phone if she's just quickly nipping out, to me that's more strange… just wondering what other people do (i know it's a boring question but i'm curiousGrin)

What could you possibly need from your handbag when you're at home?

I have my car keys, my wallet, a lip balm, a face mask, a few tissues, and sundry old receipts in my handbag. What do you keep in yours?

BusterGonad · 07/01/2026 01:26

My bag is used when I leave the house, if I'm at a friend's house I'll leave wherever I leave my coat/shoes.

WinterWooliesBaa · 07/01/2026 01:38

I often need bits & pieces from my handbag these days, but don't take it to bed with me. It stays where I've abandoned it in the sitting room. Whereas my friend takes hers into her bedroom at night. Just to watch a film. I probably wouldn't take mine, but it's not important either way, it's up to you/your Gran what you each prefer ! Nothing to do with your mum.

you're lucky to still have your Grandparents 🫶🏻

mondaytosunday · 07/01/2026 01:44

Nope I don’t think my bag has ever been upstairs let alone on the bed! I have type 1 diabetes so I usually have my blood sugar monitor and insulin with me but I don’t keep them in my bag unless leaving the house.

Letty186 · 07/01/2026 12:53

I usually have to think where in the house I’ve left my bag when I want it to go out 🤣. I definitely don’t take it from room to room

Bambi1609 · 07/01/2026 12:53

I've almost always got it with me, I keep my diary in it and need that quite often and I'll regularly be figuring out plans when I'm chilling in bed in an evening

purplecorkheart · 07/01/2026 13:04

No, I tend to put my bag either under the hall table or on the spare armchair on the living room when I get home in the morning until whenever I next need it.

Patchworkquilts · 07/01/2026 13:09

What do you in your handbag that you need while watching a movie? And does that need to be in your handbag?

BreatheAndFocus · 07/01/2026 13:13

How big is your house?? 😂 I love my bag and have all manner of things in there but once I get home it hangs on a hook and I remove anything that I know i’ll need, eg phone, and put that on the table. If I were to need something that was only in my bag, I’d just go to my bag and get it!

SoapyDrama · 07/01/2026 13:28

No idea about the bag habits of people I know, how often does your mum go into her friends bedrooms to know if their handbags are there. I find that as weird as moving your handbag around in the first place

Tulcan · 07/01/2026 13:35

I would never put my bag, that has been on the floor in restaurants etc, on my bed.

ShesTheAlbatross · 07/01/2026 13:38

I wouldn’t ever put it on my bed, as it goes on the floor sometimes (restaurants etc). But I do take it to my bedroom with me overnight. Not sure why really. I think it’s just a habit from living in house shares where leaving personal stuff in the communal areas wasn’t really done. So it just always lived in my room.

DustyMaiden · 07/01/2026 13:42

My Grandmother would carry her handbag everywhere. Like it was part of her. She was exceptionally well groomed and would need her compact and comb, mirror. Her husband was a gambler so she could have been guarding her purse.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 07/01/2026 13:47

For me this conjures up images from about 50 years ago of little old ladies sat side by side with their handbags on their laps or next to their chairs (which would definitely be those two-strap hard-sided ones with the little metal ball clasp on top)! Relatives from that era would always keep their bags within reach, and it was an unforgivable breach of etiquette to touch, move or look into said bags, as they all obviously contained forbidden secrets alongside tissues, lipstick, loose change, Rennies and fluff.

I don’t know of anyone who still does this now, OP, and I’m knocking on a bit myself, so you may be on your own I’m afraid!

EnchantedDays · 07/01/2026 13:54

Mine gets hung up when I come home, I take my diary out and into the kitchen, then up to bed, then down to the bag again in the morning. The only other thing I use out of it regularly at home is my airpods and I try and put them back as soon as I've finished with them, ditto my card wallet if I've taken that out to pay for something online or similar but that's rare now with apple pay.

pinkspeakers · 07/01/2026 13:57

Yes I think it's a bit odd to carry a handbag around your own home. Not so odd to carry it around someone else's home.

I only use a bag when I'm out. I take different bags depending on what I am doing and what I need to carry. Often I dont take a bag at all.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 07/01/2026 14:14

Do you keep all your full stops in it?

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 07/01/2026 14:18

I just have keys, phone (which I take out when I get home), purse, lip balm/gloss, small mirror, wet wipes, tissues, paracetamol , tampons plus whatever random shit the kids have put in it/asked me to hold.
If I'm home I don't need any of that/have duplicates around the house. If I'm at someone else's, I'd probably ask for a paracetemol or tampon or tissues. I tend to pack it up just before I go out with whatever i need, although most bits also live in there and then take anything out of it when I get in. Bags all live in our coat cupboard. I wouldn't carry it round the house or someone else's house.

BillieWiper · 07/01/2026 14:19

Yeah I don't carry it from room to room in my own house. I have my vapes, cigs, lighter etc on me but nothing is ever needed from bag. So it just sits on the chair.

Makingpeace · 07/01/2026 14:20

Yep, you're weird.

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/01/2026 14:22

My ex MIL used to do this. Literally took it from room-to-room with her - in her own house! She was batshit in many ways though, it was just one of many weird things, lol.

Zigazagbox · 07/01/2026 15:22

My bag has the things I need for going out. Most of it I don’t need in the house and the bits I do I have duplicates of where I usually need them.
Also my bag’s been everywhere so it feels a bit too grubby to have in bed with me.

I get having a house bag or a little caddy take around the house with you though, especially if you have health issues that might make it hard to just pop downstairs for something you need

dogsarebetterthanppl · 07/01/2026 16:09

for clarification, i always faithfully have my painkillers/pill box, makeup for refreshing (lip liner, lipstick, lip gloss and eyebrow pencil), perfume, cigarettes and lighter, vape and spare pod, hairbrush, keys, purse (sometimes have to spontaneously order something for gran) mints and earphones, sometimes more if i'm doing something i need other things for. reading this back i must put a pen in my bag too...maybe should have mentioned in my first post i use a walking stick but i was half sleeping when posting and thought i did🙈it's just something i've always done since i've had my 1st handbag a long number of years ago at 12.
@WinterWooliesBaa i appreciate this every day, my grandad is the only grandad i had and i lost my other grandma years ago. i hope i have them for years to come, they are my heart and my reason to get up out of bed in the morning🙏🏼🥰

I used to work with older people and it was amazing how many of them took their handbags to bed with them. A friend who is a GP says it’s still common.

I - now an older person myself - don’t have a handbag. I have pockets, a phone, a gym bag, and a daypack I use for long-distance walks. Only the phone goes upstairs with me, and it stays outside my bedroom (although I’d change that if I lived alone).

But it’s hardly a big deal, you should do whatever suits you and not care what anyone else says.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 07/01/2026 16:18

My late mum always used to keep her handbag by the side of the bed. She never told me why, and it never occurred to me to ask.
