in your family?

February is easily ours.
I can think of 7 Feb birthdays without trying.
We have no birthdays in January or August though.

Erm...no it doesn't. Don't comment if you don't have the correct information. As I said, March born children are the eldest as the cut-off in Scotland is end of February to start school the August of the same year.

So, if your birth date is February 28th 2022, you start school in August 2026 - age 4 & 6 months.

If your birth date is March 1st 2022, you start school in August 2927- age 5 & 5 months.

However, if your child is born in January or February you can defer & have them start in 2027 at 5 & 6 or 7 months. This is very popular- most parents I know did this/ do this (I did with DS3 Feb born & my sister with DN Jan born).

Therefore, September born children are bang centre in terms of age.

To make it even more varied, since Covid parents can defer ANY child who is not 5 on the day school starts if they so wish, so a child born in October 2021 could go to school in August 2027 age 5& 10 months and so forth.

I felt deeply sorry for my English friend whose son is a late August birthday & he HAD to go to school a few days after turning 4. She had no recourse to defer or appeal either (no ASN). He's now 16, & perhaps it's changed.

Everywhere I’ve read online says the school year in Scotland begins in August. I’m not including children who have deferred because I don’t agree with that (and I have a summer born child). I can’t find anywhere that says that the Scottish year begins in March. No need for you to be so mad!

I'm not mad at all, merely providing information.

You're not reading clearly. Me & PP have both explained that the school year starts in AUGUST but you CANNOT GO TO SCHOOL that year if you are born in or after MARCH. March children will start the NEXT YEAR are therefore the oldest - they will be 5 & 5 months starting school. (Except for deferred children).

Why on earth would you think the school year starts in March? That's wild. Do we not take summer holidays? Honestly, I couldn't have explained it any clearer!

I think this is a case of you never having had to think outside of your own situation (as so many on MN) & another example of England centrism.

I'm not commenting at all about your opinion on deferred children. I didn't ask for it, & have the feeling that it wouldn't be an enlightened exchange somehow...
