Mumsnetters voting Reform

Mumsnet mothers have always leaned Labour. Now Reform is ahead

I'm slightly startled by this. I'm a centrist, slightly more right leaning perhaps but frankly I'm open to any government who will get a firm grip on the public finances and go about growing the economy in a sustainable way. My impression of this site is that it's definitely more left leaning and and Reform enthusiasts tend to get shouted down. Personally, I think we should be talking about them a lot more as it's highly likely they will form part of the next government.

My impression is that they are promising the earth but don't have people with the necessary skill set to make that happen. I really worry that they will get voted in and find out that they can't fix all the problems within 18 months, leading to yet more disillusionment amongst voters.

Rising support for Nigel Farage’s party — if not the man himself — may worry the government

Where will you be going out of both relevance and curiosity?

It’s got to be somewhere with no ‘fuckwits’. I’m trying to think where that would be. Spain?

You can have the view you do but people will return it. It’s a widening division.

Of course people will return it. That's fine. I don't value the opinion of those on the far right enough to care what they might think of me.

And yes, it is a widening division in our society as some people have moved towards the far right and others are horrified by that shift. It's sad, but me pretending to think that the far right types are not morally reprehensible is not going to heal that rift.

Spain has an increasing Vox voter base doesn’t it?

I have no issue with people who have different opinions. But those who have been captured by the far right are a lost cause in my opinion, and I make no apology for that.

Racists are inferior in my view.

Your contempt will be returned when those on the receiving end visit the ballot box.

Onceuponatimethen · 04/01/2026 13:27

I’ve been on here since at least 2008 and will not be voting Reform. The profile of people using the site has become wider. It definitely did used to be more centre left.

I suspect seeing how local areas are run by Reform councillors will put people off them before the General Election

Fine they to, to you. No one cares about views at each end, whatever is said is just part of the new way people don’t discuss.

My guesses are Ireland (currently experiencing a wave of immigration protests and even riots), Spain (good Spanish friend informs me the ‘far right’ are on the up here too, especially among the young) or Canada (who narrowly missed a very right wing PM last year)

Yes

The left wing parties in this country would do better to acknowledge that people will be racist if they perceive an advantage in it. In poor economic times it is just inevitable that this element of human nature comes forward. Ignoring it will not work.

It is this attitude that will bring Reform [or worse] in, if you have no valid arguments to encourage people to vote for your choice and you abandon 'them' as if they are a 'lost cause' then you might find they abandon you!

I think it’s really important we do engage with Reform voters - and this applies to both the Tories and Labour. And I also agree that there could potentially be worse than Reform. While we can debate about who has abandoned or failed core voters, we also need to acknowledge that there are also a lot who have shifted from UKIP too. But nobody has mentioned the voters who previously supported the BNP and similar who have also now moved to Reform - sadly, I know of people in my hometown whose previous social media was a cesspit of racism and BNP support who are now rebranding as Reform and gaining traction in local politics. How do you suggest that we engage with these people who have a proven track-record of racism, bigotry and far-right politics who are now under the Reform umbrella? I’ve seen people try to engage, debate and challenge with them - they’ve been deleted, blocked (irony of the so-called free speech champions) and also been intimidated, and people don’t feel able to discuss or engage with them. There are several examples of local councillors being subjected to abuse and the like from them.

There are fuckwits everywhere - can't avoid them. But hopefully we won't end up with a situation where they're all simultaneously in power everywhere. If that happens, then the world will be well and truly fucked and it won't much matter where any of us live in any

But not horrified by TWAW, the hideous housing crisis caused by overpopulation, fundamental Islamism growing and growing, and what appears to be a very worrying trend of sex attacks on women and girls by men from cultures who see them as inferior?

Let’s elevate our discussion above personal insults. Because it makes you look like you have no real point, whereas I’m sure you do.

Do you think the UK is overpopulated? (Please don’t waffle or dodge - although I am absolutely 100% certain you will)

@Playingvideogames Yes, I’m aware, thanks. Are you suggesting that Corbyn is responsible for Brexit in the same way as Farage, Johnson and the Tories who called the referendum and then did the deal on it? I didn’t say that every person on the left was against Brexit - the point I was making is about how Brexit changed the immigration pattern and numbers.

Brexit had no effect on immigration or numbers itself. Actions by the tories which they should not have taken following Brexit did as did their sellout withdrawal agreement. They allowed millions of legal and thousands of illegal immigrants in. Please don’t quote the Dublin Convention. Numbers were tiny and we were a net recipient in most years.

I am curious about something in that article. It quotes posters anonymously, except in one case Why that one poster named and not the others?

The EU and other western countries are seeing similar politically because the issue is similar.

Illjustplayostrich · 04/01/2026 08:15

@CurlewKate I've seen it many times. Someone expresses concern about immigration and there's promptly a string of comments calling them racist/bigoted/disgraceful.

and they then have the opportunity to point out why they are concerned about immigration and any posts that break the rules can be reported.

If you put a view out there, you should be prepared to be able to defend it.

Dragonflytamer · 04/01/2026 13:34

It's not like the current lot have the people to deliver anything. Starmers saying today that no one else could lead the party. If the bar is that low then really anyone could do a better job.
