What’s happening in Venezuela and what does it mean?

I’m confused- has the US gone to war with them? What are the implications if so?

I live very close to Venezuela, on one of the Dutch Caribbean Islands. Flights to and from our island have stopped temporary due to this. Die to the location, we have a lot of Venezuelan people here, there was always trade going on, such as fruits and vegetables etc. Venezuela is so richtig in oil and other resources but it has been allocated to a few. Not sure if the people will notice any benefit soon from the removal of Maduro, but as in the past we can expect an exodus, of which many will come to the islands. Hope it will not make life harder for those who already are struggling, as the informal economy and thus day labor is affected first by the arrival as often immigrants will have to work for less pay, which would put a straint.

It’s incredibly complex and you really do need to read a lot of primary texts to understand.

I’d start with two of the most interesting places. Iran-Contra and liberation theology and the Americans. The first because it’s so blatant and illegal. The second because it proves that it’s never about right and peace and the people.

I studied Central American US intervention and have travelled there and still think I know next to nothing. I do know that the Americans aren’t the goodies though. And they won’t be here.

Thanks. I live in South Africa and I note it’s on your list. The Americans had never invaded here and removed any leader of any government past or present.

We seem to have been on Trumps radar recently and at the blunt end of his rhetoric. Makes me wonder what is in store for us and why.

Trump and his ego. And oil. Always oil.

As I understand it, Trump has decided that Venezuela are importing drugs into the US and it's suddenly an emergency. So the US has been attacking/seizing/blocking Venezualan boats in the Caribbean and Pacific and the strikes are an escalation of this.

Some people think it's all an excuse to overthrow the current government and claim the oil.

There are debates about whether the US is acting legally (such an odd phrase when it comes to war).

Are you happy with the citizens starving in a socialist government?

I’m absolutely delighted to see the back of Maduro. He has violently oppressed his own people and is guilty of the most vile human rights abuses. Hopefully the quarter or so of the population who have fled because of him ca now safely return.

I'm also absolutely delighted Trump turned up in Nigeria recently to save Christians from persecution too.

Just as he's saving these Venezuelans from their tyrannical president.

I wonder which oil reserve he'll turn up at to rescue the people next?

Off to keep banging my head against a wall 😞.

Lunalara · 03/01/2026 11:20

Honestly this isn’t the start to 2026 we needed 🥲

Why do you think so many flee Venezuela and what should people do about the starvation they suffer?

It’s easy to say they should be fine with it, as you might be but it’s their lives are being lived in difficulty.

So are many other leaders but the idea that Maduro is some unique evil that has to be removed is just Trump's propaganda

Every leader they kill or depose is the most evil person since Ghengis Khan. Until they want to take out someone else. Who even remembers their names ?

Having said that , when they started a coup against Hugo Chavez thousands of people took to the streets to support him. Doubtful this will be the case with Maduro.

Presumably Corinna Machado is Trumps choice for the job of puppet leader. She has already promised untold riches to the oil companies. As for the poor ....nothing to see here , move along.

One word - oil. It's always about the oil, no matter which country.

100%

Donald is hiding behind it being drugs - despite them producing less than 1% of the worlds illegal narcotics.

They do have a large amount of oil.

LadyBlakeneysHanky · 03/01/2026 11:24

It means the US wants to steal Venezuelan oil. It means more death & suffering, & more illegal immigration, which will be used by US politicians to distract their increasingly ill and impoverished electorates from recognising that the real threat to them is …..the predators masquerading as their own leaders.

(The US needs to steal Venezuelan oil because it intends to support Israel in spreading war and death and destruction across the Middle East, thereby destabilising oil supplies.)

Anyone who believes this is about democracy probably also thinks Keir Starmer cares about old people 🤡 and that Andrew Mountbatten Whatever does not sweat.

Why do you think Trump is in Venezuela?

What do you think will happen in Venezuela once he's completed his mission of 'saving the people from starvation'?

It's easy for you to hail Trump as saviour, but how much less difficult will their lives actually be post-plunder?

I’m talking about American intervention, not just invasion. Things like the SA Border War and some dodgy proxy stuff with Angola and Mozambique where the US were paying both sides against the middle. Outwardly opposing apartheid while covertly quite liking SA against the communism of some of the other SADAC countries at the time. There was some covert aid a la Iran-Contra to SA to oppose communism.

And yes, I’d be wondering too.

It’s easy for you to forget there’s real lives under control, people fleeing or starving.

Do you have a suggestion on what to do about that? Given your current disapproval.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 03/01/2026 11:28

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/01/2026 11:11

Is it?

Because American intervention and interference has made the poorest and most vulnerable worse off in many countries. I’d argue most countries they have done this to. Let’s make a fun list:

El Salvador
Nicaragua
Honduras
Guatemala
Panama
Cuba
Angola
Mozambique
South Africa
Afghanistan
Pakistan
Laos
Vietnam
Cambodia

And that’s just recent and off the top of my head. China etc. were longer ago.

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan are mostly neutral (but only because the bigger regional bullies were balancing). And the Second World War, which is probably good but they were late and forced to join.

And now Venezuela, possibly Greenland, maybe Canada.

That’s a nice list of countries many of which have been ruined by communist or Islamist loons!

I assume, since they're all about bringing stability and Democracy, they're getting ready to support Edmundo Gonzalez as he ascends to the presidency he was legally elected to in 2024?

Much like Venezuela’s drugs, Trump has made his issue with South Africa to be about a white ‘genocide’ when I would imagine his real problem with us lies somewhere in the the middle of our support for Iran, our taking Israel to the ICJ and possibly our strategic location at the tip of Africa.

Interesting.

It's absolutely farcical. Hasn't he just pardoned another convicted ex-president too. One actually convicted on drug charges. Guess he's not so anti-drugs after all.

@Ilovedandelions Weren't people starving in America when he forced the government shutdown?
Isn't it worse when you are the richest country in the world and people can't get medical aid or food?

How I long for a discussion where opposing political/ideological views aren’t immediately declared to be “lies!” or “bots!” or met with performative amazement/horror “JFC!” It’s so reductive and tiring.
