Am feeling sad tonight after seeing photos/videos of old school mum friends having a lovely evening together with their kids.

We are in bed at normal times and don't really celebrate NYE, I am feeling like our kids are missing out as we don't have friends like that (they are 13 & 8) and they will grow up thinking that we're boring!!

I know I'm being negative, and am better these days at acknowledging my sadness and moving on, so please indulge me and tell me if you are also having a "normal" evening!

Been a non event here. DS been getting more and more dysregulated as the school holidays have gone on. We're all pretty tired and irritable. I tried to make the best of things but DH in a mood and then he upset me so I watched a film with DC while he sulked in another room. Got them to bed at about 9pm and now I'm in bed as well. DH still downstairs watching a film or something.
I don't really like the pressure of NYE in the way it makes us feel like we should all be having the best night of the year. We're all knackered.

Edited

Almost identical situation here.

My husband is a musician and 9 times out of 10 is gigging on NYE, so tonight - as with many NYE in the last 15 years - I am at home snoozing on the sofa with my dog! Happy New Year to all x

Jesus, we live a couple of miles outside of a town and omg, the firework noise! I feel so sorry for you all that live in towns and cities!

I still remember the sound of the fireworks on NYE 2000 and being totally speechless at the noise level. Well it's just the same nowadays for any old NYE!

I am NEVER moving into a town or city!

Hollyhobbi · 01/01/2026 00:06

I’m in. Listening to fireworks having a baileys coffee

I am in a medium sized town. The noise is horrendous and I can hear dogs barking and other animals calling. It must be terrifying for them. I hate it.

just had to get my 4 year old autistic out of bed, put the ear defenders on and go downstairs, high anxiety with the stupid fireworks.... Happy 2026 though everyone...

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 01/01/2026 00:09

We’re in as well. DP had 3 bereavements in a row this month so safe to say it’s been the shittiest month ever.

I normally enjoy NYE but this year is a non event.

mumwithallthebooks · 01/01/2026 00:09

It's been a night in for me again. I choose to describe it as "restful" rather than "boring"!

Nancylancy · 01/01/2026 00:12

All my closest friends are at home / in bed. DH and the kids are asleep, and I'm just stood in my dressing gown watching fireworks from the window before I turn in myself!
I used to love NYE in my twenties and I'd go out every year or go to parties. Now it's just like any other night!

Wildbushlady · 01/01/2026 00:14

I wish they'd ban fireworks except for professional displays, it is getting ridiculous.

Our elderly cat is a shaking mess, despite the medication. There aren't enough ear defenders in the world to calm down ds at the moment (as I speak he is attempting to squeeze a second pair on over the top).

I can hear next doors baby screaming through the walls, poor little one was fast asleep before being rudely awoken! I really feel for the mum, she's not very well herself either.

I'm hoping to get us out of here and to a lovely village before next year. Or if not able to move yet, a holiday cottage in the middle of nowhere.

honeyfox · 01/01/2026 00:15

Same here, had a look out the window at the fireworks ten minutes ago, they are still going and hopefully Ddog won't pay any attention. Just a quiet night in here watching TV with a glass of wine.

Screamingabdabz · 01/01/2026 00:21

Both Jools and Ronan can get in the bin - they were both insufferable - why indulge this mediocre bilge?

Anyway op you are not alone - we are all in wearing pjs getting drunk, as are all of my relatives including millennials with families. It’s only my dd21 who is being moody because she’s got fomo poor kid (and having to put up with me moaning about how shit the tv is!)

JH0404 · 01/01/2026 00:21

Having a rubbish New Year’s Eve here! Not having a new years drink for the first time since I was 15 as peri menopause symptoms are giving me anxiety attacks, and I still have to stay up until midnight in case anyone nearby lets off fireworks as I will have to check on the horses 😩. So depressing, couldn’t even watch the London fireworks on tv at midnight it would make me too sad.

Xmasbaby11 · 01/01/2026 00:22

My 11 and 13yo dd both went to friend's houses and DH and I stayed in watching TV. It's been nice. We had a busy family Xmas and I am studying around my job, so life is busy and it was a rare evening completely off and relaxed. It's been an awful year and we don't have a lot of money spare, so not even any special food or drink, but just nice to relax together. I'm glad the kids had fun with their friends. We did get invited to a friend's get together which was very kind, but I wasn't feeling v sociable.

I can hear fireworks -we are in a city near a park which often has them. Luckily the cats don't seem bothered and the noise doesn't keep us awake.

chellewillnotbebeaten · 01/01/2026 00:23

We are all in bed - 4yr old sleeping, partner snoring his head off next to me, I’m sat scrolling my phone as I normally do at this time of night - I’m perfectly content 🥰 only thing that would improve it is if I had been asleep a couple of hours ago……. I’m stuck in a rut of not feeling at all sleepy til about 1am

Theoldwoman · 01/01/2026 00:23

I’m stuck in a foreign country trying to get home. Flight has been delayed.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/01/2026 00:24

We’re in - went out for a lovely lunch and then just had cheese tonight. Our last cat was so terrified of fireworks that we got into the habit of staying in with her - we sadly had to say goodbye to her in 2024 and now have a little boy cat who is desperate to be outside, no fucks given. DP has just gone to bed, I’m watching Jools with a glass of wine. Happy new year!

Liverly · 01/01/2026 00:24

My dog is in bits. Despite medication. Hateful

25flyby · 01/01/2026 00:26

In or out theres no difference to time, it just marches on.

Mumof1andacat · 01/01/2026 00:27

I ate peanuts and chocolate, watched downton abbey and scrolled on my phone

MyCatTibby · 01/01/2026 00:28

Just watched the fireworks on the telly. Off to bed now. Happy New Year All!

14HoursToSaveTheEarth · 01/01/2026 00:29

I actually forgot it was NYE (or rather now NYD) until I read this. The kids were not told and I doubt they remembered.

we had a lovely day but tonight was a normal night.

ScorchedEarthAdjacent · 01/01/2026 00:30

They are young and have the chance to make their own choices on NYE when they are older. It’s fine. There is nothing wrong with your choices.

Have recently moved to the literal arse end of nowhere. After decades of trying to calm the hounds over fireworks…..this year…blissful silence 🥰

ClaireEclair · 01/01/2026 00:32

I’m in bed right now, listening to the fireworks outside and feeling glad I’m not out there.
