What is everyone’s New Years Eve plans?

Just curious how everyone plans to bring in the new year? For me, we will probably go a nice walk tomorrow afternoon, visit some family (I have an Aunt that has a New Year’s Day bday and I need to give her her gift), and then plan to be back home nice and early and have a nice, fancier dinner with DH and 3 DC’s. Will then get youngest DC to bed but let the two eldest stay up late. DH and I will have some drinks and then we’ll go to bed shortly after midnight. 2025 has been a tough year for us. Hoping 2026 is better. What is everyone else planning?

Cleaning the house today when I can motivate myself…
We normally spend it having dinner and drinks with friends but another friend is having a huge party tonight and am really looking forward to that as haven’t been to a big NYE bash for years.
Tomorrow will be food, telly and a walk if the weather’s nice.

mondaytosunday · 31/12/2025 10:30

I’ve caught a chesty cold so other than collecting a grocery order (and regret not having it delivered but wanted to save the charge as not my usual store), nothing. Probably a movie tonight with my DD but not sure I’ll even stay up til midnight.

I really like NYE and New Year's Day as a way of rounding off this winter festive period. We aren't religious, but I enjoy the whole time as a sort of long festival before hunkering down for winter. I enjoyed wonderful big NYE events when I was young, but that was many years ago now. Today will be a big house clean and hair cut (needed, not because of any mystic motions), a casual evening with friends, we'll all want to go to bed early, and then a walk tomorrow.

There's a massive party in our village, everyone goes crazy for it! In reality the pubs are so packed and noisy you can't hear yourself think so it's a bit pointless. I've never really understood standing somewhere noisy trying to chat to people. So I think I'll make some canapés and stay in.

I'll be at work all night from 7pm till 7am making sure Ambulances are sent appropriately to those that need them. Be like a normal shift but extra busy. Hope you all have a lovely/safe Evening l!

Good luck and thank you!

Quiet one here, beef joint and fizz later. Why did the BBC pick Ronan Keating for tonight's musical new year performance? Feels a bit of a let down

Quiet one this year for us, it’s been a tough November and December, due to family bereavement. We’re going for a meal at 7.30 then home for some drinks and games, just the 4 of us. I’ve got a couple of hours work to do today but will get that over with early doors. Happy new year all, here’s hoping for a nice 2026 for us all.

Can any Scot’s explain to me why NYE is so big there?

Not Scottish but a friend shared this the other day which may explain:

For centuries Scotland did not officially celebrate Christmas and many Scots worked on 25 December.

"Yule vacations" were outlawed in 1640 due to Reformation influences and it was only recognised as a public holiday in 1958.

It meant Hogmanay on 31 December with its feasting, music, dancing and traditions such as first-footing was the country's main winter celebration.

afaloren · 31/12/2025 10:51

Spending it with friends. One of whom lost her dad a month ago so we will raise a glass. Apparently there will be a pinball machine!

RaraRachael · 31/12/2025 10:53

Can't be bothered with NY. I'd like to go to bed at my usual time but there's no point as arsehole neighbours will be letting off loads of fireworks so I won't be able to sleep and will have to comfort the cat.

merryhouse · 31/12/2025 11:54

We'll be ringing out the old and in the new

There will almost certainly be crisps and a bottle of champagnoise, which is one of the times I regret the fact that we don't live within midnight-walking distance ;-)

Dinner appears to be something with turkey: curry, pie or risotto I haven't yet enquired (probably not curry there's a pot of stock too)

S1 and partner are on a uni+ ringing trip, though whether they've arranged to visit a tower for the bongs or will just sit with the handbells I don't know.

S2 and fiancee are at a party hosted by her extended family

gingercat02 · 31/12/2025 12:00

I'm volunteering this afternoon, then takeaway wine and telly. Jools' Hootenanny is compulsory viewing here. Glass of fizz with the bells.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 31/12/2025 12:02

At a friends house watching a film and snacking/light drinking.

ChopstickNovice · 31/12/2025 12:03

Yearly sleepover with best pals. The kids play together so nicely 99% of the time while the adults play boardgames and everyone eats too much party food :)

dontforgetme · 31/12/2025 12:26

@Toastandjam16 thank you! That’s so interesting, I had no idea Christmas wasn’t a public holiday there until the 50s!

zingally · 31/12/2025 12:28

I went and had a sausage sandwich and coffee from Starbucks, and a quick pop into the supermarket for a few bits.

We usually do stay up to watch the fireworks on the telly, but it's a quiet evening. Usually consisting of books, bath and snacks. Maybe a film.

BauhausOfEliott · 31/12/2025 12:31

Just me and DP, who is cooking us a posh dinner. We’ll listen to music, play a couple of games and drink too much. I will not be lifting a finger as I’ve just done all the cooking and hosting for Christmas so will be lying on the sofa with a glass of champagne and a book while he’s cooking.

I won’t be watching Jools Holland. The very thought of that show makes me wince.

Flowertopz · 31/12/2025 12:41

Staying home, pjs tv and a take away . I'm up at 4am for work so fingers crossed fireworks don't go on for to long .

Hope you all have a fantastic new year's eve whatever you decide to do

PrincessHoneysuckle · 31/12/2025 13:11

We're on holiday in the UK.Early meal in a steakhouse then fizz in front of Stranger Things.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 31/12/2025 13:14

Working today and next two days. I’m not too fussed on NYE these days so maybe some food and a glass of something before bed well before midnight hopefully!

changednamforthis · 31/12/2025 13:17

Raisondeetre · 31/12/2025 03:15

Me too. Currently coughing my guts up . I have had a house full for nearly two weeks and at breaking point. I think I might just stay in bed until they leave now and let OH deal with the guests.

Came on here to say the same thing. I’m feeling dreadful

Christmaseree · 31/12/2025 13:20

Dinner at a local restaurant with another couple and there is a DJ and dancing after the meal. We went last year and it was good fun plus I have a new dress to wear so I’m really looking forward to it.

Raven08 · 31/12/2025 13:21

Nothing.
Like every nye :)
We celebrate the ny on the solstice (21/12) with a bonfire and say goodbye to the old year. There may also be mead involved :)
I detest forced jollity and have always disliked nye for this reason.
I'm usually in bed by 9pm.
On nyd I'll be watching the finale of stranger things :)

Notmyreality · 31/12/2025 13:22

We’re in the middle of taking down the Xmas trees and decs and tidying up!
Always feels better once the decorations are gone and order is restored.

Lulu1919 · 31/12/2025 13:29
