Things that sound nice but actually aren't

I'm putting forward Fruit teas.
Some of the combinations sound so promising and positively delicious.

In reality, they taste what I imagine drinking pot pourri to be like.

Brainwashing.

Sounds like a spa treatment. I'd love to have my brain washed, like when you have your hair washed at the hairdressers.

Actual brainwashing is bad.

Actual LOL😃

Baths. It's nice for about 10 seconds.

DoYouThinkYouCouldTell · 30/12/2025 20:58

@ChocolateCinderToffee , couldn't agree more about crumbles when eating out. I was once served a 'crumble' that had broken soggy rich tea biscuits as the crumble element, on top of the custard! Ffs. Traumatised me it did

LighthouseLED · 30/12/2025 21:01

I like fruit teas…

Overrated things for me would be breakfast in bed - can’t get a comfortable seated / eating position and the crumbs get, erm, places you don’t want them to be - and art galleries. Yes, they’re very pretty pictures, can we go now please?

RisingVamp · 30/12/2025 21:03

Picnics! The hard ground gives me pins and needles, I always spill something and then there’s the insects!

pumpkinpaste · 30/12/2025 21:03

Ready meals. Appealing descriptions. Taste blaaaaahhhhh and have texture like slurry.

CherrieTomaties · 30/12/2025 21:03

Spa Days:
sharing saunas, pools, relaxation rooms etc. with half naked strangers is just awkward. And not relaxing.

Big group of female friends:
Drama. No one can arrange a date for anything because of work, childcare etc. Hen parties and weddings and baby showers become OTT and expensive.

Arran2024 · 30/12/2025 21:05

Niche!

I love raclette. One of my neighbours has a raclette device (machine?) And holds raclette parties with raclette she gets from the Alps - it costs a fortune to get it here apparently. Absolutely delicious but a real faff and only one person gets served at a time.

RisingVamp · 30/12/2025 21:05

kimbear87 · 30/12/2025 20:24

Raclette

Omg I bloody love a raclette! What don’t you like? Not saying you’re wrong, just curious!

heartsinvisiblefury · 30/12/2025 21:11

Sourdough
gin
christmas markets

Nopicturesallowed · 30/12/2025 21:17

RedRosie · 30/12/2025 18:03

@Nopicturesallowed toast? TOAST? Food of the Gods.

It always smells so good but never quite lived up to expectations. The only exception is hospital toast, which is always amazing 😂

Waitingfordoggo · 30/12/2025 21:18

EchoedSilence · 30/12/2025 15:17

Goats cheese. Tastes like a goat smells.

This is absolutely true.

So why do I love it so much?

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 30/12/2025 21:19

I would agree with most UK Christmas markets being absolute pants but I've been to Cologne, Bruges and Amsterdam markets and they were beautiful. So much so that some mates and I are booking a Danube Christmas Market cruise for next year.

Baths sound lovely but any relaxation is offset by the brooding knowledge that when you get out you'll have to clean the bloody thing, thereby working up a sweat so you'll need a shower.

Weddings. I'm always thrilled to be invited. I love planning an outfit, love the service and cry buckets at how happy and beautiful the bride and groom are. Then it deteriorates into a long day of hanging around, small talk and mediocre food. Followed by an evening of overly loud music and shouted small talk.

DoYouThinkYouCouldTell · 30/12/2025 21:20

Totally agree @pictoosh . Hogmanay in Edinburgh is shite.
Used to be able to see the fireworks from a bridge near our house when my kid was younger, never wanted to be in the middle of it.
Too many people (for me) in the town these days & I steer clear

Exasperateddonut · 30/12/2025 21:22

Pineapple. They are far too much of a gamble as to whether you’re getting a perfectly juicy tasty fruit or hatred in the form of prickly fruit.

A trip to London for a West End show. Stressful journey. Uncomfortable seat, with poor view unless paying top price. Poor acoustics, boiling hot or freezing cold and not enough toilets. Give me a regional production in a comfy modern theatre or a live stream in a cinema where I get to see the actors faces anyday.

Hard agree!
the cramped seats and shuffling through to get to them - and the two toilets in the whole theatre does my head in

Obimumkinobi · 30/12/2025 21:27

I think all the panettone haters can't have had one recently because they're soft and lush now. Just finished a cherry and Amaretto one from Sainsburys, which was moist to the last Crumb.

DoYouThinkYouCouldTell · 30/12/2025 21:27

Applecrumble0110 · 30/12/2025 20:35

And their cookie dough and brownie tray... their desserts are generally not nice

They also messed with their hot cross bun recipe. Bastards

Strawberrydelight78 · 30/12/2025 21:28

I love fruit teas but I hate Mocha which is a mixture of a latte and hot a chocolate absolutely vile.🤢🤮

shhblackbag · 30/12/2025 21:29

and art galleries. Yes, they’re very pretty pictures, can we go now please?

So true for me.

Strawberrydelight78 · 30/12/2025 21:30

EchoedSilence · 30/12/2025 15:33

Sourdough bread. Far too chewy.
Brioche. Neither bread or cake.

I only like sour dough toasted with proper butter. Can't eat it for a sandwich.

Arran2024 · 30/12/2025 21:38

Sleeper trains. Sounds romantic - it isn't!

ElsieMc · 30/12/2025 21:39

@ShadesmarBead haha. Try the laxatives or rather the "prep" as the consultant calls it prior to a colonoscopy. They disguise it as evil chemical orange juice that certainly does not involve fairies nor panpipes believe me.

Topseyt123 · 30/12/2025 21:43

I totally agree about fruit teas smelling great but being tasteless and totally disappointing. I'd also say the same about herbal teas too. I just want normal tea.

I also agree about feta and goats cheese and it seriously irks me that as a vegetarian it is on so many restaurant menus. It's as if they can think of no other options.

I'm sure I'll think of other things.

Topseyt123 · 30/12/2025 21:45

Dough balls. Many people seem to love them but I don't get it. I don't want to eat unbaked bread.

HerbieFluffyDumpling · 30/12/2025 21:47

Cream Crackers!
