What’s your post-Christmas house like?

Is the tree down? Are the kids presents still all over your living room? Are there any corners with discarded wrapping paper still in them? How are the washing/dishes piles looking?

The leftover turkey should be gone tonight, then it’s back to work on Monday for me.

Christmas has only just started! How can it be post Christmas? This is Christmas-time! It ends at Twelfth Night. Or sometimes we leave lights up until Feb 3rd. So, the tree is still up, decorations are still up, twinkly lights are twinkling, the Christmas tablecloth is still on, etc.

mondaytosunday · 28/12/2025 12:42

Tree is still up and will be at least another week. I still have the Christmas placemats on the table. I’m eating some Boxing Day ham for lunch right now, we will aim to get rid of the meat leftovers by tomorrow, I think we ate the last of the veg last night. A few stray bows lurking but my kids are uni age so it was quality over quantity. I’d kinda like to de-decorate the house on New Years but my DD would not be happy! Just realised I have a tray of pigs in blankets which we will have to have today!

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 28/12/2025 12:44

Tree and decorations down today and piled up on our bed to be put away.
Living room rearranged to give new toys their own space. The shite behind the TV unit is now across the floor (mainly dust 🙈) and we're still in our PJs after watching TV since 6am. Lazy day indeed 😴

Toys everywhere, mainly dinosaurs. Tree is still up and lit - far too early to take it all down yet!
What troubles me most is the recycling - mainly cardboard toy packaging. We are waiting for the bin to be emptied tomorrow and then still have lots piled up in the house waiting to go in! It's all in different corners of the house🙈

gingercat02 · 28/12/2025 12:56

All decorated still. Nothing comes down until 12th night. DS is 17 so no toys, but gifts went up to bedrooms on Christmas afternoon.
Loads of food and snacks left. We are all off until the 5th so a week to go still.
Did some washing yesterday and the dishwasher/dishes get done daily regardless.
House is a bit scruffier than usual but fine if someone called in.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 28/12/2025 13:02

The rush and expectation to put the Christmas tree up as soon as Halloween is over is replaced by the rush to get it down when it’s actually Christmas holidays. I can’t get my head around it. This is the time to enjoy it all, the cozy downtime, leftover food, time to relax after all the pre Christmas madness.

Judellie · 28/12/2025 13:51

I read this thread and thought I'd better vacuum, at least, so I've done that at least. Thank you Mumsnet for that encouragement/kick up the bum, lol!

Judellie · 28/12/2025 13:55

Forgot to add, the tree and cards etc are still up but all of the presents have been cleared away. My birthday is New Years Eve (boo) so my birthday presents are under the tree now.
Still not found my lost handbag but I shoul dbe able to get to my desk to wfh now that I've done a bit of tidying up.

Damnloginpopup · 28/12/2025 14:15

God no. Put everything up at midnight then went to bed then took everything down at midnight and went to bed. Boxing morning we threw all the leftover food out, stuck the cards and wrapping in the fire followed shortly after with the sawn up tree and put granny and the decorations back in the loft.

Monicaaa · 29/12/2025 07:09

I don't normally do it this early, but it's all coming down today. First Christmas without my mum and tbh I have had my happy face painted on, but it's been a constant struggle and I have had enough.
My only child is grown up and they won't mind.
Feel the need to go back to pretending life is normal.

PenguinLover24 · 29/12/2025 07:28

I'm usually get them up early and take them down around the 5th sort of person but with a toddler this year I left it a bit later to put up and on boxing day I felt overwhelmed with all the stuff so I took all the decorations down, had a good clean and now everything is where it should be and the living room feels huge and it feels nice! Never thought I'd see the day I'd take it down so early! Won't get away with it when toddler is older right enough so took advantage this year 😂 still lots of sweet tubs and chocolate on the tables etc!

Godlovesatryer88 · 29/12/2025 07:39

Tree still up and will be till the 1st. my 2 year olds toys are all in the living room. But I did do a full house clean and tidy yesterday so things are organised. We are the last of the turkey yesterday so normal meals will resume for the next few days.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 29/12/2025 07:42

Mine is clean and tidy with all presents put away (just me and 20yo DD so no toys etc). Tree and decorations still up and will stay up until new year. I threw out the last little bit of chicken and stuffing this morning but still have Christmas food left including cheese, lots of chocolate, panettone, biscuits etc. We will slowly work our way through these in January. I’m loving the cosy evenings with candles lit and tree lights twinkling, will be sad when the tree has gone!

laddersandsnakes12 · 29/12/2025 07:47

Decs still up, will be until the 1st. Cheese and turkey all gone, lots of chocolates still to eat though. Had a big tidy y’day - got our DS to tidy his room and find homes for his new toys and books, hubby and I hoovered, dusted, cleaned kitchen and bathrooms. Just needed to declutter and feel clean and tidy after a few days of lounging around being lazy. Back to being lazy today though now the tidying has been done! Aside from a trip to the shops to get some basics and most importantly, fruit. Haven’t seen any of that this week aside from the grapes alongside the cheeseboard 😆.

pteromum · 29/12/2025 08:46

@Clockyclockznot for a few years but yes in the past.

have not told children yet, am quite excited

LondonLady1980 · 29/12/2025 09:12

It’s the 29th today and the house is 95% back to normal.

Up until yesterday it was a total shit hole though, just
presents and mess EVERYWHERE!!!

Me and DH had a mad blitz yesterday though, throwing out all the rubbish, putting all the new presents away, taking the tree down, taking down all the Christmas cards, sorting our all the cardboard into the recycling bin, hoovering up all the glitter etc and by yesterday evening things definitely felt back on track.

We still have a few little bits and pieces to sort out (mainly kitchen and food related), but hopefully by the end of the day it will feel like the Christmas Chaos never happened 🤣

EllaPaella · 29/12/2025 09:44

Tree still up will be up until NYD. Reasonably tidy and clean and I tackled washing yesterday. Kids rooms are chaos!

SushiDisco · 29/12/2025 09:51

Our tree will come down on New Year’s Day. Most presents have been put away and taken out on rotation. The house is slowly starting to look a bit more “normal”!

However our recycling pile is overflowing with wrapping paper and cardboard boxes! Dp is making a trip to the recycling centre tomorrow.

DancingLions · 29/12/2025 10:26

It’s actually my presents that are still in the living room! I have a Lego set, embroidery stuff, some books and a few other bits and pieces. Things I’m planning to use over my time off. My DC are adults so their stuff is with them. Had a little tidy up yesterday of the last of the paper, ribbons etc, I’d left it out for a bit as the cats like to play with it.

The tree and decorations will be up for a while yet. I’m not working again now till 12th Jan so they’ll come down at some point before then. I promised myself that I won’t do any major cleaning or anything while I’m off work. It’s been a tough year and I need an actual break.

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 29/12/2025 10:31

Relatively, and surprisingly, normal here. We only moved in two weeks before Christmas so it was hectic, but we really pushed on to unpack so Christmas could be as ‘normal’ as possible for our son, 4.
Tree and decs are still up, altho the garland on the bannister is looking somewhat worse for wear after my nephew used it as a trapeze 🙄 but toys have their homes, food is relatively normal, leftovers are minimal now having hosted four days in a row and DH is firmly back to work 🚜

Hobbit90 · 29/12/2025 10:33

Decorations down as I am almost 38 weeks pregnant and needed to get the house ‘baby ready’. Otherwise they would still be up! There is however lots of chocolates open and on various tables, a bag of presents that still needs sorting/putting away and general untidiness where I’ve started a job and then given in to sheer pregnancy exhaustion lol

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 29/12/2025 10:38

House clean and tidy, with most presents put away. Tree stays up until twelfth night, we also have mountains of Christmas food still.

DH has flu so DC is making him a coffee and I've taken his breakfast up. I'm watching Polar Express so it's still reasonably festive here.

ChrimboLimbo · 29/12/2025 10:48

I am trying to get some go and tidy the lounge. I am seriously considering taking down the decorations but leaving the tree up for as long as possible.

It is real but hasn't dropped at all yet, maybe it will make it to Candlemas

ChrimboLimbo · 29/12/2025 16:44

Well I have mainly been half watching films and been on here, but I have dechristmased everything except the tree and the outside lights.

It does feel better, and the tree looks even nicer without any other distractions so I am pleased.

Raven08 · 29/12/2025 17:00

We've taken the Dec's down this afternoon.
We are in London for 2 days from tomorrow and I like them down before NY (I hated them still being up when everyone was back at school/work when I was younger...)
We don't go mad decoration wise so it only took an hour to get it all packed away.
I had a quick hoover round.
