I've ruined someone in Aldi's Christmas!! Apparently

Just been to Aldi to get some stuff. Went to get some smoked salmon. It was a want not a need.
I went to the chiller cabinet and opened the door to get some salmon. There was a couple standing close looking but not opening the door. I opened the door and took the last 2 packets I could see.

After I took them I heard ' why didn't you open the door before her? That's now Christmas ruined!'

They then followed me closely round the next couple of aisles saying ' we have no smoked salmon, what are we going to do?' While glaring at me!

Not my fault! Also it's an industrial park there us also a sainsbury/ lidl and m&s nearby.

Maybe I'm a horrible person but I found it quite funny!

They weren’t his fish though. They were the fish of the one person who had thought ahead enough to bring a picnic and they were guilted into helping everyone else out.

Fair point.

I once took the last celeriac in waitrose on NYE and I regret nothing

Of course it's not your fault. But it sounds like you weren't that bothered whether you had salmon or not. In those circs I'd have been tempted to give one of the packs to the couple.

Would have helped me to start to feel a bit Christmassy.

Me too.

And it sounds like one of them was more angry with the other than with you. It was an argument between them.

Not exactly in the spirit of celebrating the birth of a man who shared his two fish with 5000 people OP.

Love it.

I sort of had something similar happen today.

I was in our local Aldi and noticed that they were discounting all the fresh turkey crowns by 50% (so from about £22 to about £11).

Then I noticed that the really, really expensive turkeys had been discounted by 75%.

These were their Specially Selected "The Ultimate Hand Finished Chesham Bronze Turkey" that even came in a cardboard box instead of normal plastic.

There were only two of them left (or maybe they only had two anyway, they were really expensive) and I thought, at 75% off - I'm having that.

So I picked one up and put it in my basket.

Then a woman started demanding of me "How much is that?" At first I didn't reply as I was just confused as to why she was asking me that question.

Eventually, to keep the peace, I told her - the price is £X and (after doing a quick bit of mental arithmetic) so with 75% off it's £Y.

While all of this was going on somebody else picked up the last of these turkeys and this woman then just stood there.

I'm really not sure why that happened at all.

Not as bad as my Christmas!
it’s been ruined cos had a call from my fishmonger to say he’d got me whole crabs instead of crab claws at fish market this morning.
So, thinking on my feet I went to numerous supermarkets to find a couple of frozen lobsters. Can’t find any for love nor money.
So that’s our day ruined.
We do however have three packets of lovely Scottish smoked salmon I’d had the forethought to pick up last week.

Ah well, thems the breaks 😞 😝

My Christmas would have been ruined too if the fishmonger had given me crabs! 😱

No, come on, his mother thought ahead and packed him a picnic.

Please come back and tell us how your son has ruined Christmas. I am sure the reasons are many, varied and possible even quite idiotic.

I once ruined christmas by pointing a lady in the direction of the exit rather than walking her out.

She shouted at me so much she made me cry. I was only 18... and I was dressed as an Elf 😭

God i hated retail

What is the sherry trifle thread?

A current thread where the op took the last sherry trifle and another woman stalked her around the shop, waited until the op wasn't looking then stole the trifle from the ops trolley.

Rainydayinlondon · 23/12/2025 15:32

I did this with some Christmas decorations… took the last two and saw the disappointment on a couple’s face ( they were just loitering nearby)
So I offered them one which they were extremely surprised about, and you know what, it actually felt really nice. I don’t think I would have “enjoyed “ having two of that decoration knowing they’d missed out.

I read that with my mind in the gutter 🫣🤣

What a lovely life they must lead if all it takes is some salmon to ruin their Christmas …

Some people have to contend with having beans on toast and children waking up to no presents from Santa coz their parents are so skint ..

or I got a notice last week to leave my property after Christmas, that ruined my Christmas …

if only we had their lives hey ?!

Ah, that sucks! What awful timing, hope it doesn't wreck your Christmas altogether.

Somethingneedstochange78 · 23/12/2025 15:33

I love Aldi but got some smoked salmon from there once and it was horrible. Tasted cheap and far too salty haven’t had any from there since.🤢🤮

At least God had the decency to make sure baby was born in time for Mary to tuck into the blinis and cheeseboard

Couldn't manage to get him in outside of peak time in the inn hospitality industry, though.

They "ruined" their own Christmas with their dithering. Not your fault. I don't think it's that funny though.

Give over its hilarious 😂 as previously quoted: you snooze you lose 🤣🤣

Salmongate!

I used to work for the DWP many years ago and I used to regularly ruin people’s Christmases by somehow making them fill the forms in wrong/too late and so their benefits wouldn’t come through on the date they wanted them, more than once a child was put on the phone so I could tell them why they wouldn’t be getting any Christmas presents that year.

Were they all related to the woman who was on her way to the Post Office to cash her giro when the wind came and whipped it out of her back pocket?

JudgeJ · 23/12/2025 15:40

Naala · 23/12/2025 14:18

As if they followed you around! I wonder if they were planning to steal it from your trolley.

We were once in Aldi or somewhere to buy a gingerbread house kit for our visiting granddaughter, we saw someone strip the shelf, about 15, into her trolley and I had to physically restrain OH from following her and taking one!
On another occasion I was in Waitrose when they had some smoked haddock ridiculously reduced, there were 3 sides and I asked him to weigh them for me. A woman came up, I saw those a few minutes ago and I went to ask my mother is she wants them and she does so I'm afraid they're already mine! The assistant told her that she had been there 10 minutes ago but hadn't asked for them to be put aside so I was buying them. She got on her high horse at him, 'my man' and so on, had she not been so rude to him I might have just bought 2 but as it was I still took all 3.

You're right - you do sound like a bitch

PhilOPastry62 · 23/12/2025 15:42

I want to know why they were standing and contemplating the salmon if they knew they wanted it. Do they stand and gaze at all their purchases prior to buying? Does it help them savour the moment of anticipation? Did they think it might reduce in price if they stood and stared for a while? Shopping must take them a long time. I mean, I can understand taking a bit of time if there's a selection of different kinds of smoked salmon to choose from, but if smoked salmon is essential to Christmas and there are only two packets left, just stick it in your trolley and move on.

Shefliesonherownwings · 23/12/2025 15:42

If that's what ruins their Christmas then they really must lead sad little lives.

TerrysNeapolitan · 23/12/2025 15:42

A. If they asked staff they no doubt had more to be put out, out the back
B I went in our local Sainsburys a few hours ago and there is loads there. Other shops are available.
