I've ruined someone in Aldi's Christmas!! Apparently

Just been to Aldi to get some stuff. Went to get some smoked salmon. It was a want not a need.
I went to the chiller cabinet and opened the door to get some salmon. There was a couple standing close looking but not opening the door. I opened the door and took the last 2 packets I could see.

After I took them I heard ' why didn't you open the door before her? That's now Christmas ruined!'

They then followed me closely round the next couple of aisles saying ' we have no smoked salmon, what are we going to do?' While glaring at me!

Not my fault! Also it's an industrial park there us also a sainsbury/ lidl and m&s nearby.

Maybe I'm a horrible person but I found it quite funny!

Ah, I’d have given them one!

You sound like a lovely person, but honestly, you really shouldn’t give them one.

Put yourself in their position: you didn’t get an item that is unnecessary - ok to feel a bit bummed and normal to consider how to get one- perhaps go into another shop or try tomorrow if really wanted. But really, would you follow OP round the store muttering that Christmas is ruined? Like some sort of guilt tripper/emotional blackmailer? It’s awful behaviour - like a spoilt 4yo. And shouldn’t be rewarded.

winterbluess · 23/12/2025 20:06

Well you're not going to get any salmon by standing staring at it 🤣 urgh people

Calliopespa · 23/12/2025 20:07

Boxingshibes · 23/12/2025 18:09

I didn't say I was gleeful I'd ruined their Christmas, they were the ones that said Christmas is ruined.
It was just the way they stood there then followed us muttering loud enough about not having Salmon. Dd hid the salmon amongst our other food as she thought they might steal it.
I think xmas shopping is not the time dawdle, it's carnage out there!

Think yourself lucky.

A poster on another thread is saying the disappointed customer trailed her and stole her trifle when she wasn't looking.

Scorchio84 · 23/12/2025 20:25

& also that salmon will provide a few laughs over your hosting days& if the other couple have a sense of humour (not holding out much hope) they'll laugh too

How could she have got it if she sold it?

the first person puts the item in their trolley, then the couple that wanted the item the first person can say eg ill let you be able to buy the item from the store if you give me eg £5 for it, then they give the op the £5 and then the couple go to buy it from the store

I wouldnt because they sound like the sort who would say "But we need two!" and expect the OP to hand over the other one as well.

Fuck that. You snooze you lose. Tough titties.

Interesting. We will never know for sure, though.

Seasonofthesticks · 23/12/2025 21:01

To be fair a man reached for the last pack of AA batteries in the supermarket at the same time as me the other day, I picked them up first but then offered them to him. He declined but said thankyou!

Had to read that a couple of times...

OP still wouldn't have the product though. She'd have made a few quid but not got any goods for free.

ArabellaSaurus · 23/12/2025 21:05

A memorable Christmas Eve many years back was watching two people quite literally tug of warring over the last bread loaf on the shelf.

i put the 2 items in my trolley, another couple wants one, i sell or offer to give one of the items to the couple for £5 then i take my one item and use the couples £5 to pay for my item making my item free

Well you haven't the slow door opener did! Have they not shopped in a supermarket before? Find a member of staff and ask if there is any out the back - if not find another supermarket. Did they really follow you around? If so people are bloody weird, what do they expect you to do, capitulate?

At lunchtime in Aldi today there would have still been back stock to go out. I was in this afternoon and they were still putting it out.
Unless you made a store colleague cry, you're not a bad person.

Yesitsmeimback · 23/12/2025 23:58

I was once reducing stock in m&s I reduced a whole salmon customer asked me to reduce it more, I said (truthfully) I had to do 1st 2nd and last reductions at certain times. He waited it was ages he stood by the fish area and waited I went back to do final reductions. I reduced it he reached for it but another arm slid underneath and took it. I honestly thought it was going to get physical 😂😂😂

Wario54 · 24/12/2025 00:36

Supermarket worker here.

We ruined someone's Christmas last year, because they turned up to do the full Christmas shop at 7.54pm. We closed at 8pm (having been open 14+ hours every day for the previous week). We refused to let them in. So we ruined their Christmas because it was our fault apparently... Even if we had let them in, most of the essentials (turkey's etc) had sold out long before then.

So far this year we've had no (physical) fights in the aisles. Still time yet though

ill admit it can get omg, what frustrates me is sometimes when covid we were waiting in line yet some would just breeze past and get x off the shelf its like how rude etc

My son works in a Tesco Express and was told multiple times last Christmas that he personally had ruined Christmas because they didn't have sprouts/brandy butter/the right box of chocs/xyz at 8pm on Christmas Eve.

He's excited to find out why he's ruined Christmas this year.

Things don’t change
my mum worked in a well known frozen food store 30 years ago and in those days shops shut 4pm Xmas eve. Those turning up in the last half hour looking for all sorts including fresh bread etc always blamed staff
Also those turning up after Xmas moaning about the turkey as they hadn’t taken the giblets out…..

FenceBooksCycle · 24/12/2025 00:47

How sad for that person that her entire quality of Christmas experience rests on the availability of smoked salmon and requires that this substance is generally less popular than in fact it is. She must be very shallow. If you had happened to arrive at Aldi 4 minutes earlier such that you took the salmon from the fridge before they arrived rather than while you were in their field of vision would ot still have been you that ruined Christmas, or would the other dozen people who bought the earlier packets shared some responsibility?

I'm sure they can make it to another supermarket before tomorrow if it's really that big a deal.

Yeah its ridiculous. There's plenty of smoked salmon about. We had to go to several supermarkets to get everything i needed. Most people will have to if they are planning a few meals for large groups. It's hardly the end of the world having to go to another shop. Lidly didn't have any leeks left when I went. I just went down the road to Sainsbury's who had plenty. There will be somewhere nearby with smoked salmon its a common thing people want at christmas.

GoodQueenWenceslaus · 24/12/2025 01:18

I had something similar at Easter when I could not get to my local Sainsbury's lamb joints because there was a couple standing bang in front of them dithering. They seemed to be picking up various joints, examining them, discussing them, then putting them back, and were totally unable to make up their minds. When they moved slightly to one side I was finally able to get access, had a quick look and selected what seemed to me to be a reasonable joint before moving on. I looked up to find this couple looking covetously at my trolley, clearly convinced that I must have found that elusive perfect joint which they had therefore now missed out on. I had to go past them a couple more times before I left, and each time I got these accusing glares and could feel their eyes boring into me when I turned away from them.

roundsquares · 24/12/2025 02:06

I wouldn’t have given them it either tbh.

Following OP around being passive aggressive after the fact is creepy and weird.

They lost out, it’s shit for them but at the end of the day it’s a salmon and I’m sure there is one available for purchase in another shop if they want it that badly.

Christmas food shopping is a busy time, doddling about is what makes it such an unpleasant experience. If folk went into a shop, got what they needed and left the queues and congestion wouldn’t be half as bad.

Instead you have a shop half filled with folk who act like they’ve never been in a shop in their life. Standing talking about each purchase (do this before you go?), blocking aisles for 20 minutes because they’ve bumped into Mary and want to catch up (which is fine but maybe don’t stand blocking an entire aisle while you do it). Leaving food down anywhere because they’ve decided no, don’t want that anymore (ok great so no one gets it as you’ve left your turkey crown in the crisp shelves). Knocking stuff over and just walking away (… pick it up?)

So, no, I wouldn’t be handing over the salmon. Rudeness shouldn’t be rewarded and people need to be more aware, ie, their Christmas isn’t actually the most important thing in the world and other folk are entitled to buy a salmon also.

Crunchy7 · 23/12/2025 18:16

Couldn’t you have just gave them a pack ? no…….you didn’t have to, but it would have been the kind thing to do.

I really don’t get this mentality.

It would have been “kind” if the couple didn’t follow OP around and make comments about her buying an item, that is available for sale, on the shelf in a supermarket, that they had the opportunity to buy themselves.

They didn’t care about being kind- they were rude and hoped that some pointed commentary on the whole thing would make OP feel bad/uncomfortable to the point where she offered them the salmon.

I’d also guarantee if OP had offered the salmon, they certainly wouldn’t have said “no it’s ok, you keep it”.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 24/12/2025 07:35

Is Aldi smoked salmon nice? I had some from there a few years ago and it was a bit flabby and odd. Maybe they have changed suppliers. You might have done them a favour, OP. Maybe they went to M&S and got some nicer salmon.

Megifer · 24/12/2025 07:50

About 10 years ago I got the last 2 small turkey crowns on Christmas eve from Tesco and had a couple cause a scene, shouting I was selfish, didn't need 2 (i did but whatever), then they tried another tactic - saying theyd been everywhere and this was their last chance to get one, they had family coming, the woman was crying....i refused and the man just took one out my trolley in front of me 😮

Unknown to them i had DP with me so he followed them and got it back when they werent looking 😂😂😂

BeardofHagrid · 24/12/2025 08:01

I don’t understand why they set their entire Christmas happiness on one food item then left it so late to actually buy it!! Pretty infuriating 😂
