I've ruined someone in Aldi's Christmas!! Apparently

Just been to Aldi to get some stuff. Went to get some smoked salmon. It was a want not a need.
I went to the chiller cabinet and opened the door to get some salmon. There was a couple standing close looking but not opening the door. I opened the door and took the last 2 packets I could see.

After I took them I heard ' why didn't you open the door before her? That's now Christmas ruined!'

They then followed me closely round the next couple of aisles saying ' we have no smoked salmon, what are we going to do?' While glaring at me!

Not my fault! Also it's an industrial park there us also a sainsbury/ lidl and m&s nearby.

Maybe I'm a horrible person but I found it quite funny!

LOL, they are stupid and rude, very very rude! Which kind if deranged person follows another shopper around musing about salmon!
But there is an increase of people like this around. Total lack of social awareness.
Enjoy your salmon OP.

I used to work for the DWP many years ago and I used to regularly ruin people’s Christmases by somehow making them fill the forms in wrong/too late and so their benefits wouldn’t come through on the date they wanted them, more than once a child was put on the phone so I could tell them why they wouldn’t be getting any Christmas presents that year.

Sounds like you’ve ruined your own Christmas there then @greenwithgleeGrin

Unless she's found herself in the same situation as Mary...?

Oh yes, used to get this when I worked in a bank too. I wouldn't give them money that wasn't their account so it was my fault there'd be no turkey.

At least God had the decency to make sure baby was born in time for Mary to tuck into the blinis and cheeseboard

People go mental at Christmas. Was working in a major supermarket this morning and some of the conversations were pure gold! Someone bought some ritz crackers and said ‘that will shut Natasha up’ so clearly a ritz cracker back story! Also there was a debate about whether long breadsticks were better or worse than mini breadsticks due to the risk of double dipping in to hummus! 😝

IncessantNameChanger · 23/12/2025 15:02

not meaning to be smug here, but why leave the one thing that will "ruin Christmas" so late? Like things don't sell out days before Christmas every year? I'm more of a frozen turkey crown person but I wouldn't be buying that today

SillyNavyTiger · 23/12/2025 15:04

MyThreeWords · 23/12/2025 14:16

Of course it's not your fault. But it sounds like you weren't that bothered whether you had salmon or not. In those circs I'd have been tempted to give one of the packs to the couple.

Would have helped me to start to feel a bit Christmassy.

I would have given one too. Thinking these people are not super smart, so if a pack of salmon is enough to brighten their day, why not.

Maybe they were worried about the cost or something, who knows.

On the other thread where a woman stole a trifle from a shopping trolley, on the other hand, that I wouldn't be kind about 😂

5128gap · 23/12/2025 15:08

Not exactly in the spirit of celebrating the birth of a man who shared his two fish with 5000 people OP.

WaltzingWaters · 23/12/2025 15:09

Maybe next year they’ll be more organised and buy in advance and freeze if it’s that important to them.

My son works in a Tesco Express and was told multiple times last Christmas that he personally had ruined Christmas because they didn't have sprouts/brandy butter/the right box of chocs/xyz at 8pm on Christmas Eve.

He's excited to find out why he's ruined Christmas this year.

Oh I did that! 11pm Christmas Eve at the Asda Clapham Junction 1996, when the store had been open 24 hours a day for the previous week. Couple full on yelling at me.
I still remember it kindly every year Grin

Coralinescat · 23/12/2025 15:11

Well I'm sure they will have found their much needed smoked salmon by now.

I don't stress about it these days.
I think Christmas supermarket shopping just brings out the worst in some people.

TheIceBear · 23/12/2025 15:14

Iwouldntsaythat · 23/12/2025 14:22

Me too unless they were being really obnoxious

I’d be very tempted to as well out of kindness but they sound like they were being really passive aggressive about it to be honest just saying it loudly enough for her to hear. And not particularly deserving of it. Yeh it’s annoying that these things happen but get over it or go to another shop. There is more to Christmas than smoked salmon.

WonderfulSmith · 23/12/2025 15:15

The shops will be open tomorrow and Aldi isn’t the only supermarket.

In other news I have discovered that the Turkish supermarket down the road will be open all over Christmas, including Christmas Day!

ARunByFruiting · 23/12/2025 15:15

You were lucky they didn't steal it from your trolley like the woman did on the sherry trifle thread!

tripleginandtonic · 23/12/2025 15:15

Christmas spirit equals giving one pack to them. Yabu

Globules · 23/12/2025 15:16

YOU ABSOLUTE BITCH! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Enjoy the salmon.

Not exactly in the spirit of celebrating the birth of a man who shared his two fish with 5000 people OP.

They weren’t his fish though. They were the fish of the one person who had thought ahead enough to bring a picnic and they were guilted into helping everyone else out.

WonderingWanda · 23/12/2025 15:17

How tragic of them to feel that Christmas is ruined.

Nothing of the sort going on here. Do you find the OP's 'story' funny? If so, how sad. The season of good will, to all!

Yes, I do. They snoozed and subsequently losed.

What is the sherry trifle thread?

True!

You were probably allowed to eat smoked salmon when pregnant in those days anyway. Much less medical advice around pregnancy. I can only imagine what your midwife would say if you told her you were going on a multi-day journey on donkey back right before your baby was due! Social services referral I expect.
