Milk for Santa. Surely not!

On another social media platform on British traditions, so many comments suggesting leaving a carrot and a glass of milk out for Santa.

When did this become a thing? Poor Santa. He always got a glass of whiskey or brandy from us. Kept him going all night. Also no mince pie??

Sherry in our house, every year and I can confirm he enjoyed every last drop and possibly helped himself to a couple more before he’d finished filling up the stockings!

dontforgetme · 21/12/2025 13:08

Sherry in this house. With a carrot and some pork pie!

Milk for Santa, carrots for the reindeers, and maybe some biscuits for Santa. No alcohol. It’s dangerous to drink and drive. Wouldn’t want Santa to have a sleigh crash.

Always booze for FC. He doesn’t need to worry about crashing. He has magic reindeer to guide him.

It was always milk in our house growing up but that's because neither parent really drank. It's milk in our house now too which again makes sense because me and DH don't really drink much either and it seems daft buying alcohol just for Santa.

BauhausOfEliott · 21/12/2025 13:12

He got a very generous brandy or a large single malt whisky when I was a kid, plus a mince pie or some iced Christmas biscuits.

The reindeer got a little bunch of carrots to make sure there was enough for all of them.

Growing up as a kid in our house, Father Christmas was basically the one from the Raymond Briggs books. Essentially a kindly old gentleman, but also amusingly grumpy and long-suffering. Definitely likes a drink or three.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 21/12/2025 13:13

We always left sherry and a mince pie for Father Christmas and a carrot and couple of sprouts for the reindeer. Weirdly, I can't remember what my own kids left out. Neither me or DH drink sherry or port, so maybe we did leave milk. DH would have drunk it after they'd gone to bed.

Tdcp · 21/12/2025 13:14

Oat milk here for Santa as we have milk allergies 😂, carrots for the reindeer and a mince pie too!

Always milk in our house as well and was milk when I was growing up. I fully get why some people do alcohol instead but I don't know, I feel a bit weird about my child leaving out alcohol for santa, milk feels more... innocent or something. And I'd say i have a fairly open minded approach to alcohol and I drink myself. I guess maybe it's what you're used to?

Agree, milk is more innocent

I was born in the late 60s and the only thing left out were our stockings! I don't remember any of my friends leaving food or drink either! I was very surprised when my DCs came home from school saying we had to have a carrot for Rudolph! When did this start?

ItsameLuigi · 21/12/2025 13:16

Santa really likes dark fruits sometimes too.

unbelievablybelievable · 21/12/2025 13:18

It can be anything. Port, babysham, prosecco, gin...even a can of larger one year when I was pregnant with dc3.

I was born in '73, my siblings in '70 and '72 and we did definitly always left stuff for Santa and the Reindeer.

yeesh · 21/12/2025 13:26

Growing up we left a carrot for rudolf, a mince pie and a lager for Santa 😂 my liked to leave a glass bottle of coke for him (clearly watched too many coke adverts).

cramptramp · 21/12/2025 13:34

We didn’t have whiskey or brandy in the house and I wasn’t going to buy a bottle to put in a glass for Santa just so it could be tipped down the sink. He got milk or a bottle of lager.

StandingSideBySide · 21/12/2025 13:35

Whiskey would put Santa on the naughty list so it’s milk in this house 😃

CharlotteFlax · 21/12/2025 13:36

It's meant to be whiskey but he gets sherry here, cos that's what we've got!

Milk is for the elves, no?!

Edities to add, I was born late 70s and we've always left an offering out for him on Christmas Eve.

Justme10 · 21/12/2025 13:38

When I was a kid it was a beer, mine pie and carrot for the reindeer.
Now it’s a baileys, shortbread or homemade biscuit if I have been organised enough and a carrot 😂

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 21/12/2025 13:38

Milk and mince pie.

Hoardasurass · 21/12/2025 13:40

Whisky and a mincemeat pie for father Christmas and a carrot for rudolf, when i was a kid and I've done the same with mine

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 21/12/2025 13:41

Always milk in our house as kids and mine as kids.. loads of people dont have alcohol in their house... but most have milk..
We dont drink alcohol..nor did my parents.Never known anyone leave alcohol.. Santa wouldn't drink and drive.. and Children shouldn't be giving Santa alcohol.

Dolorsy · 21/12/2025 13:41

Whiskey and a mince pie round here. The internet is mainly robots pretending to be Americans, don't listen to it. 😂

I didn’t know the elves went on the sleigh with Santa. Is this because everyone gets so many presents these days and Santa can’t cope ?

Feeling like I should leave more out now

HeartyBlueRobin · 21/12/2025 13:43

Never put anything out as a child. I didn't even know it was a thing in some families until I was older. I never bothered with my own children either.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 21/12/2025 13:43

That’s odd. He used to get a whisky and a slice of Yule Log when he visited my house, when i was a kid. He didn’t like mince pies, apparently.
Oh, and a carrot for Rudolph, too. 🥕

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 21/12/2025 13:43

We do milk, a mince pie and a carrot. No drink flying here.
