Milk for Santa. Surely not!

On another social media platform on British traditions, so many comments suggesting leaving a carrot and a glass of milk out for Santa.

When did this become a thing? Poor Santa. He always got a glass of whiskey or brandy from us. Kept him going all night. Also no mince pie??

I don't ever have whisky or brandy in my house so I'm not going to waste money buying some in especially. I've always got milk though.

HelpMeGetThrough · 21/12/2025 15:15

He got brandy and a mince pie when I was a child.

Milk and a biscuit (no chance I’m calling it a cookie!!) isn’t going to keep the poor bugger going.

We did milk when ours was small. Nearly 30 now. It’s really not new fangled. Also he’s not real.

I still have the letters my oldest used to leave for Santa “ hope you are not too tired and enjoy the cherry” (sherry)🤗
I love a glass of sherry!

pouletvous · 21/12/2025 16:21

he always gets a beer from us. Milk? He’s not a baby

You know what it’s like on here, more than one thimble of wine a year and you’re a raving alkie.

So interesting. Of course I know not everyone drinks..... It's apparent we have extremely boozy Christmases. Always need Whiskey, Brandy, Wine for soaking mincemeat, feeding Christmas cakes, trifle, Tiramisu, Zabaione and various other alcohol drenched Xmas food. Also mulled wine, and Champagne.

Looking at that list, maybe we are a bit OTT 🤣

Santa got a Bells islander blend in our house...

When visiting my son he got a tin of Guinness.

Lactose intolerant since 1980s in both cases.

Milk is a US thing (strange country), he gets sherry or port in this house and carrots for the reindeer.

I grew up in England in the 1970s and it was always milk, nothing to do with America

Livpool · 21/12/2025 20:06

Baileys here but when I was growing up it was whisky or port. Randomly, they were my dad’s favourite drinks….

ThatHazelSnail · 21/12/2025 20:08

In our house in the 90s/00s, Santa got milk and a mince pie and the reindeer got a carrot.

TheFluffiestCat · 21/12/2025 20:29

It was always sherry when I was a kid. These days it’s whatever we’re most likely to finish up, so probably rum.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 21/12/2025 20:39

We never left anything out when I was a child (1970s).

With my own kids, it is a carrot for the reindeer and a mince pie (in a Tupperware box because cats) and a glass of wine as Santa here doesn't like milk.

cariadlet · 21/12/2025 21:17

I'm in my late 50s.

Growing up, we always left a glass of milk and a mince pie for Father Christmas and a carrot for the reindeer so that's what I did when I had my own dc.

haggisaggis · 21/12/2025 21:34

I was born in 1965 and left out milk (which both my parents hated and would get poured down the sink!). I’m not sure what else we left out - possibly shortbread. My dh also left out milk and so did our now adult dc.

Ineffable23 · 21/12/2025 21:38

Father Christmas always got booze in my household. Didn't specifically matter which but often port or brandy. He would have been most unimpressed with a glass of milk.

Sprogonthetyne · 21/12/2025 21:40

Santa is a grown up so is allowed to drink alcohol, plus it's very cold on that seigh. I thought it was only Americans that left him milk.

TimSamandLulu · 21/12/2025 21:40

I don’t have any booze in the house apart from one or two bottles of wine for cooking. So I’m not going to specially buy brandy or sherry or whatever just for Santa. My kids don’t really see people drinking alcohol so they’d be a bit bemused, whereas to them milk is a normal drink.

2026hastobebetterthan2025 · 21/12/2025 21:46

Small whisky, mince pie, carrot here.

When DC were little I used to take a bite out of the carrot - not sure they were ever fooled that Rudolph left the bite marks 🙃

CoodleMoodle · 21/12/2025 21:48

Milk for Santa here, and whatever biscuit we have available. Last year he had a Jaffa Cake! Previous offerings have included a Jammy Dodger, a custard cream and a bourbon.

Reindeer get a bowl of water and some sort of vegetable. Sometimes a carrot. One year it was a couple of cherry tomatoes!

Jellycatspyjamas · 21/12/2025 21:53

mindutopia · 21/12/2025 14:35

This again. 😂 Not everyone drinks, you know. Some of us choose not to keep alcohol regularly in the house. Father Christmas has no complaints here and my dc don’t associate getting wasted with fun and celebration unlike in some of their friends’ homes.

Santa gets a dram of whiskey and a mince pie here - my kids certainly don’t think you need to be wasted to have a good time.

I used to drink loads at Christmas, all dressed up tastefully of course, champagne, espresso martinis, red wine with dinner, a whisky, etc.

Now I don't drink at all and it's really quite wonderful: cheaper, healthier, happier. Better memories, 100% better for the kids.

It's milk for Father Christmas at our house this year!

RaraRachael · 21/12/2025 21:59

I grew up in the 60s and it was a glass of sherry and a mincemeat pie for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph.

LottieMary · 21/12/2025 22:05

Here it’s a glass of red and a couple of those lovely m and s biscuits 😂😂

tedibear · 21/12/2025 22:20

80’s baby here and it was was always milk and some sort of biscuit and carrot for the reindeer. Assume it was the same for DH as he never disagreed about the milk when we started doing it when the kids were born. I think he did say oh maybe a beer for Santa and I said no I wouldn’t encourage Santa to be drinking when he’s working and driving a sleigh 🤣
