Songs that deliver a gut punch

Sorry for weird title.
Just wondering if there are any songs, when heard unexpectedly, has the power to hit you in the gut and render you an emotional wreck.
I heard Separate Lives (Phil Collins/Marilyn Martin) earlier today and the emotions it brought up are still with me now.

Songs eh. Powerful stuff.

Forever Young was used in a Tesco Christmas ad a few years ago too @therewasafishinthepercolator and it’s that one that has me in tears. It just was my family Christmases as a child. The boy reminds me so much of my late brother.

The Tale Of Jenny And Screech by Ren. A hard listen about the effects of generational abuse and trauma.

beeeeeeez · 18/12/2025 18:35

The one that starts 'Who cares if one more light goes out in a sky of a million stars that flicker, flicker...'
Ship to Shore. Reminds me powerfully of a special friend who was a coder, who died very suddenly.
The Wichita Lineman
I was born under a wandering star - someone who was more than just a friend who has recently wandered, and we are still good friends but I'm having trouble letting go. I allowed him into my heart, and he did the same for me. Turns out we're not compatible in certain ways, and we're having to renegotiate what we are. This time of year! Gah!
Stille nacht - the whole WW1 ceasefire connotation.

My elder daughter is an adult now. She has autism and a learning disability and could display some challenging behaviours and there were three songs we could play to turn things round- she would immediately calm down and start crying. Just these three:

Knocking on Heaven's Door by Bob Dylan
You've Got A Friend by Carole King
Mandy by Barry Mannilow

The Hollies, He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother.
Just makes me cry every time I hear it. A beautiful song.

I lost my brother a year ago tomorrow, this is now impossible to listen to without bawling 😢

Take that - rule the world. I’ll never hear it without thinking of the olympics closing ceremony when Gary Barlow had just lost his newborn daughter. Always brings a lump to my throat

Gary said the only person at that event to offer sympathy was Liam Gallagher.

George Michael "Praying for time". It came up in my playlist when I was paying my respects to him at Highgate cemetery 😭

💐

MissSkate · 18/12/2025 19:22

Time after time by Cyndi Lauper reminds me of holding my newborn daughter.

This is me by Keala Settle from the film The greatest showman. Reminds me of it playing whilst watching my daughter in an assembly as she'd always struggled to join in due to having autism.

Survive by Lewis Capaldi. This song came out at a time when I was struggling massively with my mental health and I physically quite unwell. It spurred me on to getting better, if Lewis can do, so can I.

Two beds and a coffee machine. I'm a survivor of domestic violence, watched my mother go through it and also ended up as a punchbag when he'd got bored with her.
'Another ditch in the road, keep moving
Another stop sign, you keep moving on
And the years go by so fast
Silent fortress built to last
Wonder how I ever made it'

These lines really resonate with me as 34 years on, I'm still triggered by stuff, christmas in particular is a bad time.

Exactly these feelings but the other way round - he probably wants to hunt me down and slap me with a wet towel!
I broke his heart and I still feel guilty to this day.
Back in the days when it was the done thing to phone up (!!!) a radio station to ask for them to play requests, this was one of the tracks he requested for me.
I still get overwhelmed when I hear it out of the blue. Total gut punch.

Those radio shows! We all
listened to them, an absolute guilty pleasure. And the guilt? Isn’t it weird how you can travel back in time and feel it? I was only the heartbreaker once, and why I did it I’ve no idea why. He was absolutely gorgeous, had a good job and he had sent me lovely flowers just because.
So obviously I ditched him for a lunatic with a fast car.

the80sweregreat · 18/12/2025 20:23

‘ Our tune ‘on the radio was nearly always sad !

IntelligentInputDarling · 18/12/2025 20:36

@ThisJadeBear Right. You are seriously scaring me now! Are you actually me?! That is precisely what I did. I dumped him because he was too nice 🙄
I know I really hurt him and that's where the guilt lies.

Sending hugs @Upwiththisiwillnotput . I lost my brother when I was 19 and he was 17. I feel your pain. One day that song will be a beautiful reminder of the good things that you shared and not just the raw pain you feel now. It’s a tough time of year too. Thinking of you.

Thank you, my brother was 65 when he died, I can’t imagine losing a sibling at such a young age. I’m so sorry for your loss too. Tomorrow I will put on cheerful clothes and dance to his favourite music (mostly 70s/80s disco and ska)

BananaramaDefence · 19/12/2025 06:29

Fast car by Tracy Chapman saved my life. I heard it at 21 when my boyfriend had just beaten the crap out of me, and it made me look at my life and know I had to leave to save myself and my son.

Actually, her entire self titled album is amazing.

Everyone has done it I think.
It is four decades ago and I can remember it well.
Now I realise it’s just a part of growing up, I think.

It was hard, it was absolutely awful for my parents. All loss is hard though and everyone hurts when someone they love isn’t there anymore. Your plan for today sounds absolutely excellent….dance on!! Great music to dance to!

IntelligentInputDarling · 19/12/2025 07:30

@MamaBobo and @Upwiththisiwillnotput So very sorry x

Wearing cheerful clothes and playing his favourite music as a tribute to your brother is an amazing way to remember him @Upwiththisiwillnotput x

@ThisJadeBear aah yes, almost a rite of passage and the idiocy of youth !

Another song which speaks (hah! The irony) is Everything But the Girl's cover of I Don’t Want to Talk About It.

Wintersong - Sarah McLachlan.

And this is how I see you, in the snow on Christmas morning. Love and happiness surround you. You throw your arms up to the sky, I'll keep this moment by and by. Oh how I miss you now, Merry Christmas my love.

Lovely song and another of hers is Answer that I love.

Also My Immortal which I've always liked was played recently, chosen by his mother at a colleague's funeral. So sad he died really young.

Love that song, I remember the first time I heard it and the lyrics really hit me! Beautiful song!

everdine · 19/12/2025 08:21

The Day Before You Came by ABBA
I think it was written as a farewell.

strawberryshortcake1 · 19/12/2025 08:31

The Power of Love - Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
