Sorry for weird title.
Just wondering if there are any songs, when heard unexpectedly, has the power to hit you in the gut and render you an emotional wreck.
I heard Separate Lives (Phil Collins/Marilyn Martin) earlier today and the emotions it brought up are still with me now.

Songs eh. Powerful stuff.

The Boiler - Rhoda Dakar with the Specials. The first time I heard it, I was alone. Her screaming still haunts me and I’ve only played the record once since. It’s a ska classic.

I bought that single as I was into all things two tone at the time.
The prelude leading up to her screaming is brilliant song writing.such an atmospheric record but not in a good way iyswim.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas, by Judy Garland. This song shows her voice so beautifully. She was so lovely and so talented but she was treated abominably. Such a tragedy.

Wires by Athelete, takes me right back to driving up and down motorways when my mum was losing her fight to cancer, the line 'First time in your life, curled up on your own' still reduces me to tears 20 years later x

Reading all of these has reduced me to a teary mess.
Another Phil Collins one 'Against All Odds', the lyrics are so poignantly sad.

I doubt many of you will know/remember Emma by Hot Chocolate but have a listen -

Warning, the ending will stay with you for a long time.

Streets of London by Ralph McTell. Making me cry since I was a very little girl

There are a few by Taylor Swift that are a real gut punch because it's like she got in my head and wrote about my actual experience. But the hardest has to be smallest man that ever lived, when it kicks into the "were you sent by someone who wanted me dead" bit.

Bright Eyes, Slipping Through my Fingers definitely. I heard that for the first time in the Mamma Mia film in the cinema, DD1 was only three and I was pregnant with DD2 and I had to hold back huge sobs.

How could I have forgotten Bright Eyes? I find it incredibly moving.

Monsters, James Blunt
Wonderful Life, AlterBridge
Kite, U2
Two Little Boys by R Harris - can’t listen to it now since he turned out to be such a wrong ‘un.

This time of year - silent night. Had a stillborn and it just makes me think of my silent baby. Uncontrollable tears.

Tykarimyoureallymadeitgoodtome · 18/12/2025 14:30

@MrsMAFs That's such a heart breaking connection.
Condolences on your loss.

Seasons in The Sun by Terry Jacks. Every single time. Ever since it came out in 1974 when I was 11.

Kate Bush, This Woman’s Work. Associated with losing my darling baby girl. I can’t get through it now.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your beautiful baby girl

Moments of Pleasure by Kate Bush.
The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell.
In the Ghetto by Elvis.

When I saw the thread title I immediately thought of In the Ghetto too. Dolly Parton's version gets me.

Green Day - When September Ends

The Cranberries - No Need to Argue

After that McDonalds Christmas ad a few years ago about the mum and the teenage boy I always well up like an idiot when I hear Forever Young. 😳

'I wasn't expecting that' by Jamie Lawson.

Absolute gut-punch.

Dance Me to the End of Time Leonard Cohen

Benjithedog · 18/12/2025 15:59

Portrait of my Love by Matt Monroe

Rainbow Connection by Kermit - the lyrics are beyond touching

Sunshine on my Shoulders by John Denver. This song always reminds me of how beautiful nature can be

Latenightreader · 18/12/2025 16:07

Elvis, You were always on my mind. There was a BT advert using the song shortly after my Nan died. I was in my teens and it reflected my feelings so closely.

IntelligentInputDarling · 18/12/2025 16:17
