Songs that deliver a gut punch

Sorry for weird title.
Just wondering if there are any songs, when heard unexpectedly, has the power to hit you in the gut and render you an emotional wreck.
I heard Separate Lives (Phil Collins/Marilyn Martin) earlier today and the emotions it brought up are still with me now.

Songs eh. Powerful stuff.

The Scientist by Coldplay we had at my partners funeral, when he sings "let's go back to the start" still gets me and God Only Knows by The Beach Boys we had at Dad's funeral, and it seems very poignant as God did only know, our family has fallen apart since he died 😥

Crikey folks, I’m in tears just reading this thread. Sincere condolences to all who’ve lost people.💐
Angel flying too close to the ground - Willie Nelson
Unknown Soldier - Ralph McTell
Perhaps Love - John Denver

That one kills me even now. I had a proper broken heart when that came out and played it over and over in a very dramatic fashion.
Four decades on and I still want to find him and slap him with a wet down for ruining about three weeks of my life!

Lullaby by Kate Rusby -- for me this is about my dad dying

"Lay me down gently, lay me down low,
I fear I am broken and won't mend, I know.
One thing I ask as the stars fill the sky,
Who now will sing me lullabies"

OMG I'm emotional even typing about it!

End of the Affair by Ben Howard -- loss of love and regret

"Living without her, living at all,
Seems to slow me down.
What the hell, love?"

Night in White Satin, The Moody Blues - was my late Mums favourite song and I only have to hear the opening music and I feel physical pain.

There you'll be, Faith Hill - this song came on the radio on the way back from the hospital after I lost my baby son and had to go home and leave him there. The lyrics kicked me in the gut and I could barely breath:

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you for all my life
I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am there you'll be
And everywhere I am there you'll be

Ain't Nobody - Chaka Khan, is mine and my DH's song and the first dance at our wedding. Still get goosebumps each time it plays.

Careless Whisper, George Michael - always gives me the feels whenever I hear that sax.

Insomnia, Faithless - gives me nostalgia from my clubbing youth. Dancing in clubs without a care in the bloody world. Feeling free, young and happy.

Kissing You by Des'ree always gets me, it's very haunting and the emotion in her voice is so moving.

Into My Arms by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

All I Want by Kodaline.

ThisJadeBear · 18/12/2025 16:31

Winner Takes It All by ABBA.
Plus the video.
Agnetha looks heartbroken.
I was 11 when it came out and can remember not really getting the emotions behind it, but just thinking, I don’t really fancy going through that.
A few summers later - first broken heart - played A Different Corner by George Michael until the whole house was sick of it - the penny dropped.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 18/12/2025 16:31

Steph singing 'about you now' by the sugababes, at max's funeral in Hollyoaks, has stayed with me

BillieWiper · 18/12/2025 16:33

The thief of your heart by Sinead O'Connor. It's pretty emotive.

Siriusmuggle · 18/12/2025 16:35

Wish you were here by pink Floyd. It was on the radio around the time of my dad’s funeral, I remember Sara cox saying something about the song. I don’t even know why it got me, my dad wasn’t a huge Floyd fan. I think I was just emotionally done in, but now it gets me every time.

Maryberrysbouffant · 18/12/2025 16:35

“Always on my mind” (Elvis version)
“You do something to me” Paul Weller
”Pictures of you” The Cure

Exactly these feelings but the other way round - he probably wants to hunt me down and slap me with a wet towel!
I broke his heart and I still feel guilty to this day.
Back in the days when it was the done thing to phone up (!!!) a radio station to ask for them to play requests, this was one of the tracks he requested for me.
I still get overwhelmed when I hear it out of the blue. Total gut punch.

Most of The Cure for me. Having grown up with them as my soundtrack, the last album about aging and loss was a real heart wrencher.

I agree with you! That album is beautiful and beautifully produced but made me really emotional.

AltitudeCheck · 18/12/2025 16:44

Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye by Leonard Cohen, reminds me of a very sad goodbye, one of those 'it could have been wonderful' if only we'd met at a different time in our lives.

Peachee · 18/12/2025 16:49

Fields of Gold
Visiting Hours - Ed Sheeran

bungobungobungo · 18/12/2025 17:04

I’m Mandy Fly Me by 10CC. I heard it recently and ended up in tears and I don’t even know why? Probably just the trauma of the plane crash, and being saved by ‘Mandy’. I used to listen to this all the time with absolutely no emotions but a lot has happened since then and it just took me back.

Hurt by Johnny Cash. The NIN original is great and I wouldn't say I'm a Cash fan, but there's something about the combination of his voice, the lyrics, and knowing he was near the end of his life when he recorded it, it's so affecting.

Don't let the sun go down on me is my absolute favourite song of all time. I like both the EJ original and the version with George Michael (who I also love).
Michael Jackson's "She's Out of My Life" came out about the time of my Mother's death and although it's about being dumped by a lover, resonated with me and still does over 40 years later.
We sing Once Upon a December in my choir and I can't sing it without crying. "someone holds me safe and warm" transports me right back to my childhood.

Also My Immortal which I've always liked was played recently, chosen by his mother at a colleague's funeral. So sad he died really young.
