Thread 19 - TalkLair: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long"

(Previous thread 18)

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...

In the TalkLair, the fairy lights are festooned on the mantlepiece, the tree is twinkling with baubles, the mince pies are in the oven, the MN legendary chicken is ready to feed the hordes. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I watched the DiP one yesterday and the denouement was insane. It was good to see Selwyn, though. I was going to say I hadn't watched the BP special yet, but on looking at it I see that I have ... yes, I found it that memorable!

moto748e · 31/12/2025 12:46

Nice to see Mochi again! I can't be doing with DiP. I don't mind Madame Blanc, but you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. And neither Marshall nor Miller have funny bones, IMO.

ProfessorBinturong · 31/12/2025 13:06

Miller's not been in DiP since 2014.

We're off to the weeds outside Carlise, my wife's pal lives there. We're supposed to be leaving now, but she isn't up... oh, she is now. Just shouted at me, its all my fault for only trying to get her up every 10 minutes since 1:30!

We went down South for a few days, to see relatives. We stopped at Wetherby Services on the A1 and it was chocka with dogs both times. Yesterday, two women had dogs in the M&S Food Hall.

On the way down, a couple next to us had a dog on the eating area bench, encouraging it thick food off the table. I asked them not to and they called me a misery.

I complained to a staff member, she shrugged and walked away. Daughter was very embarrassed.

We are in the foothills north of Glasgow. We laid FiL to rest on Monday and today is our last night. We're off home tomorrow afternoon, hoping for fair weather and no winds!

I've been in Glasgow getting MiL a new (to her!) iPhone and am currently nursing a pint in spoons, waiting on the bus. I went shopping hungry and as a result have four (4) steak n haggis pies, eight (8) macaroni pies (for transport home), three packets of orange choccie biscuits, a tray of fancy foxes biccies, and some Seabrook plain crisps. And a bottle of Dark Island each for wfiey and I.

Cheers you massive wrongers,

Loving Mochi’s festive hat (and the twinkly tree in the background)!

New Year’s Eve just feels like another day here really. I’m sure my brother and I will have a drink and watch the fireworks on telly but honestly that’s about it.

moto748e · 01/01/2026 00:21

Happy New Year all you lovely people! 🍻

ProfessorBinturong · 01/01/2026 01:13

And to you. Here's to a 2026 that treats us all well. May all your surprises be pleasant ones.

BetjemansBear · 01/01/2026 09:04

Happy New Year everyone, hope it's a good one.

SinnerBoy · 01/01/2026 09:50

Happy New Year, one 🥂

Kucinghitam · 01/01/2026 10:05

Happy New Year threadsters!

(Although now I'm basically this meme, every year).

A very happy new year to all you lovely threadsters. May 2026 bring all the good stuff.

SinnerBoy · 01/01/2026 17:01

That was everyone, not one...

I joked very early on that [name of murderer] was the murderer. I was shocked to be right.

But then, as with many of these programmes, you don't cast big names if they're not going to do much.

SinnerBoy · 03/01/2026 11:30

Well, I woke up to snow and there have been a few flurries. It's coming down now, with really big, fluffy flakes. Daughter is impressed, but not enough to haul herself out of bed!

Very pretty, SinnerBoy! We had the merest dusting, which then froze.

moto748e · 03/01/2026 13:19

Yeah, same here.

Kucinghitam · 03/01/2026 13:51

Blue skies and brilliant sunshine here, very very cold though. I'm hoping any snow holds off here and across the Pennines until tomorrow afternoon at a minimum - have a plane to catch! 🏝️

Ooh, @Kucinghitam ... are you off to the Land of Real Food? Have a wonderful time.

My sister, who lives on Waiheke Island just off the Auckland coast, sent me a photo of their Christmas lunch party on the "deck" at the back of the house. She said it was 30C in the shade.

BetjemansBear · 03/01/2026 14:37

Just went into the bathroom and it's 12C in there!

ProfessorBinturong · 03/01/2026 15:39

A few flurries of snow here but very little settling. A good coating of black ice, though.

SqueakyDinosaur · 03/01/2026 16:11

I can't tell you how happy I am to have bitten the bullet and got double-glazed windows AND a new boiler! I am actually relatively comfortable (though obviously wearing huge amounts of jumpers and thermals, as this is still a high ceilinged Victorian house!).

Kucinghitam · 03/01/2026 16:21

I am indeed off home @Gonners Smile Just what I need to get over the post-Christmas gloom - tropical sunshine and glorious food!

For some reason that has just reminded me of the second time I went to NZ, in the early-mid 80s, with my then boyfriend. The food was excellent, but there seemed to be a glut of cheddar. The four of us went to a very good bistro-style restaurant where, after looking at the menu, my sister called the waiter over and asked "Is there anything that doesn't come with a cheese sauce?" And there wasn't!

SinnerBoy · 03/01/2026 22:52

Pavlova with cheese sauce, mmm!

It's melted and refrozen here, with snow on top. Taking the dog out for her evening constitutional was brief, shall we say.

More is forecast for after midnight, stout boots will be in order tomorrow.
