Thread 19 - TalkLair: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long"

(Previous thread 18)

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...

In the TalkLair, the fairy lights are festooned on the mantlepiece, the tree is twinkling with baubles, the mince pies are in the oven, the MN legendary chicken is ready to feed the hordes. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

The main thread was deleted at the OP's request for privacy. I think the T&C deletion may have been a thread about a thread.

BezMills · 27/01/2026 13:07

ah then I got confused (happens more and more often). Turns out the deleted thread that popped up in trending wasn't even from the OP, but from a nosey parker wanting to know why the original thread(s) were deleted.

BetjemansBear · 27/01/2026 13:08

What I read of those threads was very interesting, particularly about how men's attitudes towards women change once they've lived in the ME for a while.

I haven't read those threads, but the cynic in me would say that those men's attitudes towards women didn't change, but became normalised and legitimised (in their heads).

Yeah, there is that, Kuc. It's sad and scary at the same time.

Gonners · 27/01/2026 20:56

I read the first and second threads and the whole situation developed really quite surprisingly quickly and apparently in real time. Julian Barnes would have made a much better (and more entertaining) job of it. Speaking of whom, his latest book is apparently to be his last. This made me well up a bit ... and order it.

moto748e · 27/01/2026 21:44

I read a nice piece in the NS this other day about the trio of Hitchens, Amis, and Barnes, and thought much the same.

SqueakyDinosaur · 27/01/2026 23:07

I love the fact that the NYC thread is ONE post from the OP, followed by 999 posts from other people saying SIBU and her daughter needs to change her behaviour. It gives me hope for humanity.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 28/01/2026 08:14

One wonders why her daughter thinks it’s OK to behave like that…

Gonners · 28/01/2026 19:36

I have to admit that Hated Amazon came up trumps with delivery of that Julian Barnes book. I ordered it just before posting yesterday evening, so around 20:45. At 10 this morning I got a text saying it had been delivered to the local post office.

Sainsburys did less well, or rather their delivery man did. Nice chap, but after I'd unloaded everything (there didn't seem to be as much as usual) I was about to thank him and shut the door when I realised that he'd delivered absolutely no frozen/chilled items. No chicken, fish, etc. Oh? So he went back and found another full box of stuff. Fine. He was just about to get into the driver's seat when I thought "Hang on! Where's the loo roll, kitchen paper ... etc?" and tore down the path to catch him.

This has never happened before and I wonder if I am starting to look old and vulnerable? The old is fine, but the other isn't!

Gonners · 01/02/2026 18:18

Someone has started a thread ins AIBU (dunno why there) which is mildly interesting: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5484613-mumsnet-to-be-sold

ProfessorBinturong · 01/02/2026 19:33

If the FWR board is looking to move elsewhere after a sale .... we could make a suggestion.

Gonners · 01/02/2026 19:54

Ha! They'd all be banned within a week.

moto748e · 01/02/2026 19:56

This is not good news, though, is it?

ProfessorBinturong · 01/02/2026 21:50

Unlikely to be good.

Kucinghitam · 02/02/2026 09:39

Dang it all to heck, where are we supposed to move to next?

OP posts:
moto748e · 02/02/2026 11:00

How can you keep on moving unless you migrate too
They tell ya to keep on moving but migrate, you must not do 🎵

A cult fave when I was a young man.

Gonners · 02/02/2026 12:34

Ha @moto748e ... I had the album!

SinnerBoy · 02/02/2026 13:25

Bonzo Dog?

moto748e · 02/02/2026 13:38

I always loved the album artwork! Two great pictures!

Ry Cooder, Sinner.

Gonners · 04/02/2026 17:59

The Ry Cooder mention reminded me of his stunning soundtrack for Paris, Texas and in particular this beautiful arrangement of Canción Mixteca. Even more astonishing is that the singer is Harry Dean Stanton (RIP), then aged 58.

Rats, this site doesn't want me to link to it on YouTube. If you go to youtube.com/ then the bit after the forward slash is

BetjemansBear · 04/02/2026 18:09

I didn't know Harry Dean Stanton sang, there's a surprise!

BetjemansBear · 04/02/2026 18:13

Just need a bit of a wail. At the beginning of last December I damaged the ligaments in my right shoulder and whilst it has finally started feeling less painful, this has been one long haul. The physiotherapist I saw said that injuries like this generally take three months to fully heal so there's a bit to go yet.

I've been off work too, which feels weird, and it never stops raining. Feeling rather fed up and not a happy bear.

Kucinghitam · 04/02/2026 19:14

Sympathies @BetjemansBear and sending ligament-healing vibes!

And I totally agree about the miserable weather, I swear I find it more depressing with each passing year!

It’s been v. dull recently here too, but today was bright sparkling sunshine. Gorgeous. I hope you all experienced similar.
