Thread 19 - TalkLair: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long"

(Previous thread 18)

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat...

In the TalkLair, the fairy lights are festooned on the mantlepiece, the tree is twinkling with baubles, the mince pies are in the oven, the MN legendary chicken is ready to feed the hordes. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

the only photo I have of my mother

That's terrible! I really hope you get it back.

artant · 10/01/2026 16:46

Fingers firmly crossed for your wallet finding its way back to you, @SinnerBoy

I once managed to lose my wallet between the chippy round the corner and the flat I lived in at the time. I realised as soon as I got home and retraced my steps to look for it. By the time I returned home again empty handed my flatmate had opened the door to one of the local homeless alcoholics (we lived round the corner from a former workhouse, then the largest hostel in Europe, I think, now swanky flats and expensive shops as far as I recall) who had found it, found my address in it and brought it back complete with all the cash it had contained. There are good people out there.

artant · 10/01/2026 16:47

Oh and lovely picture @Kucinghitam

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 10/01/2026 22:38

That is a lovely picture Kuc. All that care in wrapping is so gorgeous. Are they delicious?
I do hope that you and your wallet are reunited Sinner.
Last night when I got up to leave the Tube, my gold chain bracelet fell to the floor and I didn’t notice. But fortunately two women, at opposite ends of the carriage, did notice and told me. First one did and I didn’t see my bracelet on the floor and then the other pointed it out. I am so grateful to them. Hopefully you will have equal luck.

Kucinghitam · 11/01/2026 01:30

I'll keep my fingers crossed for your wallet @SinnerBoy, I really hope you get your mum's photo back ❤️

They're excellent mandarins @artant and the gorgeous packaging is a modernised version of an old Chinese tradition of giving them for CNY (and more generally when visiting someone's house) - but in the old days we used to just hand them over in a plastic bag Grin

Sorry fat fingers I meant to @PoppySeedBagelRedux too!

Well, it seems like a bit of good news. I had a letter yesterday, a wallet has been handed in and I'm waiting for a Metro to go and retrieve it. The station is a good distance from where I lost it, just wonder if the money is still in it?

☺️

BetjemansBear · 16/01/2026 09:44

Good luck, SinnerBoy, I hope your mum's photo is still there.

Kucinghitam · 16/01/2026 11:26

Oh good luck @SinnerBoy!

Let's hope it's a day of good news all round; the Darlington nurses judgement has landed.

Kucinghitam · 16/01/2026 11:39

Indeed @moto748e.

Meanwhile, here’s a shop selling festive outfits for all the family.

I got it, everything was there, even the money. Apparently, he handed it in on Wednesday. Because of GDPR, I can't even pass a message of thanks via the Police. I'd liked to have done

moto748e · 16/01/2026 13:19

Wow, great news! Didn't know abut the GDPR thing, it never used to be like that, surely?

BetjemansBear · 16/01/2026 13:24

That must be a relief, very glad you've got your wallet back and everything was there!

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 16/01/2026 13:54

Such good news sinner! That was not what GDPR was designed to prevent. You could try posting thanks on Twitter etc and local message boards, explaining.

SinnerBoy · 16/01/2026 15:05

Thanks for the suggestions, although I've been locked out of FB for years.

Darlo nurses have kicked bottom, BTW!

BetjemansBear · 16/01/2026 15:31

Could your wife or daughter put something on your local FB page, maybe?

DeanElderberry · 16/01/2026 15:58

Most stylish. No doubt there's going to be a very surprised and delighted cat when you get home.

Kucinghitam · 17/01/2026 01:07

Wonderful news @SinnerBoy!

@DeanElderberry I was rather tempted to get an outfit for Mochi but I value my skin being attached to my arms.

artant · 17/01/2026 17:57

Excellent news @SinnerBoy - so glad your mum’s photo is there! (And the cash but in the greater scheme of things, that’s secondary. And bloody stupid that the police can’t pass on a message of thanks. That’s not what GDPR should be about at all.)

artant · 17/01/2026 17:59

Loving the celebratory outfits. I wonder whether the gift of one would cause Mochi to return to his (or her, I realise I have no idea) previous home.

Kucinghitam · 20/01/2026 09:48

In the end, I did not buy an outfit for Mochi, tempting though it was!

Arrived back in Blighty yesterday, gloomy and foggy, still slightly delirious from the arduous journey. (Not really that arduous, but it's certainly long).

Having spent almost the entire trip doing parent-centred things, I didn't really get to look in many shopping malls, but I did encounter this festival-fluid offering in a neighbourhood hawker centre.

Excellent.

Anyone see the aurora last night? Too cloudy here, and the barracks had their floodlights on bouncing off the clouds, so I was able.to catch a bit of a red/green glow but nothing spectacular.

BetjemansBear · 20/01/2026 11:09

Nothing seen here last night as it was cloudy.

Kucinghitam · 20/01/2026 12:39

Since we had clouds all the way down to the ground hereabouts, no aurora to be seen.
