Anecdote about wanking off three men in a random wood in Edinburgh or something. Everyone laughed hysterically.

Is it just me or have TV chat shows gone really downhill? Confused

How does she seem racist?

I remember watching an episode of Graham Norton where she was 'benignly' racist towards Will.i.am - acting fascinated by the exotic black man. It was rather distasteful.

I think it's great to see a woman who doesn't care what anyone thinks and who breaks all the rules about how women are supposed to behave. I find it very cheering

Ew no. It would be just as repulsive if a man went on there and talked about wanking off random women in public and calling people cunts and using racist terms.

If thats what you find "cheering" I find that pretty pathetic

It's not the same thing at all. Men and women are different. The sexual politics are very different.

kerstina · 29/11/2025 09:47

I didn’t use to like her then I saw her on the Australian travel programmes and thought she was wonderful. Watch those and you will see her true personality shine through. Yes she tries to shock people I was in fits of laughter at her rude anecdote last night but didn’t believe it for a minute. She reminds me of a child who is saying something outrageously naughty sees you are laughing and gets worse ! I love her sense of fun or maybe she appeals to older women more than young.

She was on Wogan or something years ago, I remember watching with my mum, who was very taken by her. Just chatty and warm and funny, and full of passion for Dickens. What the hell has happened to her/to television? Are we supposed to be happier, so much more 'advanced' now? It's all so depressing.

It's horrible , really. So depressing. I still have copies of old Radio Times from the 70's. The quality of what was on offer was first class.

I do feel embarassed for the woman. We know about wanking and orgasm blah blah, we don't need peopl elike this.

Did you see how she reacted to Will.i.am? it was cringeworthy to watch, she was racist. Thats not ok just because she is female.

Geez.

GuyForksAndKnives · 29/11/2025 09:50

I saw her recently in an old Tales of the unexpected. She was very good. But that was 1979. I actually can't stand her trying to shock all the time it's so immature.

Oh God. I don't know much about Will. I think he had a tough start and he seems interesting and funny.

Cringe.

Yes, she is genuinely empathetic towards people in her documentaries. I've no doubt she can be rude but I think she's a good egg. I'm amazed at the pearl clutching on this thread.

Well, it’s clear I’m not the only one to have found her awful.

Of course I’ve seen her in things before and knew she was a bit of a “character” - but I didn’t know she was going to be on last night until I started watching. Yes, I could’ve switched channel but I like AS and I enjoy watching the show snuggled up in bed on a Friday night. Just wasn’t expecting such a crass anecdote and was a bit WTF because the audience seemed to lap it up.

Yes, I grew up with Parky and Russell Harty and even Des O’Connor who got all the A list Hollywood legends telling fascinating tales that gave a real insight into the era. And now we have Miriam regaling us with wanking stories. Yuck.

Those shows you mention were sort of cosy and interesting at the same time.
Graham Norton writes well and can be good but my stomach turned at some of his innuendo.

I'm an 'older woman' and she doesn't appeal to me at all.

I'm amazed at the pearl clutching on this thread

It's not pearl clutching to be fed up of hearing the same tired old clearly embellished story over and over again. Its tedious and kinda sad attention seeking.

Its like your pervy uncle that tells you the same tired old story every Christmas and expects you to find it hilariously funny.

I'm older, I like Siobhan Finneran, Lorraine Ashcroft, Joanne Scanlon. Talent.

No need to talk shit.

I hate gratutious filth. It adds nothing. I'm not clutching anything, well possibly my dignity.

Tiresome

Exactly. Just because people dont particularly enjoy fart/blowjob/poo jokes doesnt mean they are pearl clutching prudes!

Maybe we just have a more sophisticated sense of humour than a 14 year old boy ☺️

More and more people will die from Dementia.

With growing age and slight Dementia judgement can become impaired as if to seem rude, similar to how a frontal lobe injury increases impulsivity.

Miriam was never shy but she cared if people about her were uncomfortable. I notice she has become more impulsive and socially innappropriate.

There but for the grace of God go I.

Interesting. I agree that can make people less aware of being socially acceptable etc but I'm not sure if I would go so far to say she has dementia.

I have never particularly liked her, and found her rather brash and outspoken. She always comes across as rude, I agree.

MrsAvocet · 29/11/2025 10:01

I think she is a talented actor and I enjoy watching her as other people. As herself, not so much. If what we see is herself of course. I wonder if this "shocking" persona is actually just another character she plays, or at least an exaggeration.
As others have said, I wouldn't be impressed by the stories she tells and her behaviour if it was a young, working class man telling the same kind of tales - I'd find them very distasteful. They don't suddenly become witty and amusing coming from a posh, older woman.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 29/11/2025 10:01

I genuinely turn off the GN show when she comes on. It's the same thing every time, her 'shocking' everyone with a filthy story. I think GN is so talented but he needs to get over his love for her because it's doing his show no good at all. For a time in my house we used to call it the pubic hair show because everyone seemed to tell a hilarious anecdote about pubic hair, I mean seriously. These are mostly intelligent articulate people, they must have such interesting life experiences and that's what they come up with. It's pathetic.

Completely missing the point of the reply about Will.I.Am but I don't know much about him either, but I do know he designed brilliant glasses - i had a pair of his range for years! I loved them 😎

Birlngsnotnicepeople · 29/11/2025 10:04

She must be laughing all the the way to the bank. Along with a few other people devoid of any shred of talent.

Htcunya · 29/11/2025 10:08

Not this older woman.

Pearl-clutching? Maybe. I just don't like crudeness and never have.

PinkPonyClubDancer · 29/11/2025 10:08

I find her so cringey. Yes Miriam, we get it, you were wild when you were young 🥱

TheCorrsDidDreamsBetter · 29/11/2025 10:10

To me Miriam Margolyes is a massive pick me. She uses shock factor style jokes to stun and awe her audience that people see a little old lady who has a wild background and dresses it up as progression, but she's also happy to throw women under the bus in favor of men.

I think she's a fab actress and can play her given roles really well, but the stuff that comes out of her mouth is just shocking, it isn't really funny.

kerstina · 29/11/2025 10:10

Post script to my previous comment. I did find myself thinking she had the same persona as Dame Edna Everage . He was also a controversial figure but I loved his humour too.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 29/11/2025 10:11

Off topic but didn't she voice the Cadbury bunny ads all those years ago. I used to love them.
