Farage’s racism

I haven’t yet seen a post about this story: Twenty people allege he has a racist past. He denies it. Who’s telling the truth about Farage’s schooldays? | Nigel Farage | The Guardian

Farage no longer categorically denies these incidents, and is now trying to fudge things by saying he didn’t mean any harm and it was a long time ago - presumably because he knows it is true and realises that 20 separate people saying it means only the truly deluded wouldn’t believe he was a racist.

But what I am interested in is does this actually assist his election chances? We already know that many of his supporters are racists - does it actually work for him that this blatant racism from him shores up their support? Are they secretly (or perhaps not so secretly in some cases) pleased?

And what do those of you who are Reform supporters but believe yourself not be racist think? Does it make you change your mind about him or Reform?

Reform UK’s leader refuses to answer questions about his abusive behaviour, claiming there’s ‘no evidence’. We talk to victims and witnesses

The small bit of hope that I have is that Trump isn’t looking too well these days and I’m hoping that MAGA be brought down by his death and by extension it will take reform down with it since they are so closely interconnected. What pieces of shit each and every one of them are.

I mainly agree with you. Except: Vance.

Yes, there is that but I don’t think Vance has the same appeal as Trump. Trump is the face of MAGA, although they are so corrupt who knows what will happen.

What happens if Farage loses his seat as MP? Can he still be PM? I don’t think many in Clacton are happy and he could well lose it.

DuncinToffee · 07/12/2025 12:57

Farage refused to face the press during his visit to Falkirk.

A PM must be a Member of Parliament. Technically they could be elected from the House of Lords, then be elected to Commons in a by election.

This hasn’t happened in over 100 years and I doubt anyone will be ennobling Farage anyway. So I am not sorry to hear what the people of Clacton are thinking.

usedtobeaylis · 07/12/2025 13:59

I saw he was trying to present himself as an authority on Glasgow culture the other day because a fair percentage of children have English as their second language. 🙄

Yes he left his newly defected Reform peer Malcolm Offord to field questions on his racism/ antisemitism - what a coward he is

I don't know why he is bothering. I doubt Reform will ever do well in Scotland.

Yep. Like all bullies, he is a coward.

Well it's not like he has to win an election.

This is really a total own goal for Farage. When he had zero peers in the HoL, there was a tiny bit of pressure to have one appointed. Now there is a Reform lord, that's gone.

BIossomtoes · 07/12/2025 15:24

Apparently Offord’s resigning his seat in the Lords to stand as a Scottish MP for Reform.

They could get enough seats given the PR system to prevent a majority coalition running Scotland. Assuming that Labour and the Lib Dems won't work with the SNP, or Reform, or the Tories.

Even with PR Reform will never do well enough in Scotland to get anywhere near power. This poll was before the latest revelations.

As long as Reform are drawing from the right wing, they will always be a victim of FPTP.

However, if we move to PR (and I think it's now when, not if) then peoples voting options are massively expanded (so definitely a boost to the notion of democracy). Because people who previously might have only felt they had to vote for an undesirable candidate in order to keep and even more undesirable one out could have the option of actually putting their preferred candidate first and the lesser desirable one second knowing their vote can't be used to elect the least desirable.

I await with interest.

You don't have to wait too long too see how things might be different under a fully PR system Jane. The Senedd elections will be under full PR for the first time.

Previously the system was a hybrid of PR and FPTP, much like the current Scottish system.
