Old fashioned/simple pleasures that you still enjoy?

There are plenty of things that I appreciate about modern life including MN but I’d love to read about some old fashioned ir simple things that you still enjoy.

Perhaps not the best example but the other day I went to a garden centre and I had an egg mayonnaise sandwich on wholemeal bread with a pot of tea and it was lovely. I often find that a lot of cafes put too many ingredients and sauces in their sandwiches so it was nice to have something relatively plain.

Also sitting having a cup of tea and a simple iced bun while listening to a Radio 4 play. And I’ve been watching old one off dramas and mini-series on Youtube. They’re so much slower paced than dramas now but all the more enjoyable for that.

What simple pleasures do you enjoy?

Picking blackberries, goose gogs, sloes, & making jams, jellies & gins. Always better than shop bought!

My dad always called them goosegogs. 😍

Getting into a warm bed on a cold day. Can’t be beat!

Another vote for bed socks.
Embroidery. Admittedly I design it on a computer now but doing the actual embroidery hasn't changed.
Reading children's annuals. I have some from the 1920s and 1950s handed down from family members.
People who know me would be surprised because I like very loud music and swear a lot.

TooOldToGiveAShinyS · 19/11/2025 22:42

Just been sitting knitting and listening to the radio (6 music) with a herbal tea. Total old farty pleasure.

therewasafishinthepercolator · 19/11/2025 22:45

Semolina with a blob of strawberry jam.

Bookmarks. My favourites are my Moomin ones.

Boardgames and jigsaws.

Museums and museum gift shops.

And I love a good garden centre too.

I love reading old annuals. Mostly 80s ones. This week I bought Buttons and Mandy.

Oh, and vintage Ladybird books. The tree illustration on the inside cover still excites me as much as it did when I was a kid.

I’m planning on hibernating in January and February so this thread is great inspiration. I’m looking forward to lots of open fires, scent-free candles. jigsaws, library books and meals that you prepare in the morning and take all day to cook.

MsSmartShoes · 19/11/2025 22:53

A kettle that whistles.
Homemade stew with dumplings.
Hot tea and crumpets.
Watching a cosy murder mystery.
A freshly replenished fruit bowl is always lovely and appreciated.
Fresh crusty bread with butter.
Soup - made not bought.

Mydadsbirthday · 19/11/2025 22:53

I love really old radio 4 plays that you can get on BBC sounds or Apple Podcasts. Like the Agatha Christies with June Whitfield and there are some even older Poirot ones which actually crackle they're so old.

I also love hearing old news bulletins, accents have changed so much even in the last 50 years.

MsSmartShoes · 19/11/2025 22:53

This is the winter version.

Friendlyfart · 19/11/2025 22:57

Definitely egg and soldiers. My mum used to make it for me when I was ill as a child.
Cat putting in my lap in front of the TV.
Baking from scratch

MenopauseSucks · 19/11/2025 22:58

Having a long, hot, luxurious shower, changing into clean pyjamas & slipping between fresh sheets before snuggling under my cosy duvet, hot water bottle at my feet.
Bliss. And I’m appreciating it more & more as I get older….

TwoNicePuppies · 19/11/2025 23:00

There is as a post earlier essentially saying ‘I’m not materialistic, but I want lots of new shit’, it made me sad, this one makes me happy!

Scrambled eggs
mug of tea and a biscuit
egg mayo sandwich with plain crisps
a mooch around TK maxx or home bargains
a bath, clean bedding and pjs
paddling!
not having to go out when it’s snowing

Are you my sister from another mister?!🤣 I looooooove a TK Maxx Mooch. I ask for vouchers every birthday (coming up, so 👏)

I'll add:

Crusty bread & butter with seasalt crystals.
Home made soup
Getting in from the school run on my day off & loving that hour of TV & a cuppa at 9:15am - feels stolen & slightly naughty. Extra points for a good, costume drama & a soft, cosy cover.
Playing music loudly & singing along loudly.
Dancing- anytime, anywhere.

Greentrilby · 19/11/2025 23:09

Wearing my old bed jacket to keep my arms warm when reading in bed. A potful of tea whilst reading the paper on a Saturday morning. Eating fruit crumble and custard. Doing jigsaws. These are a few of my favourite things.

RampantIvy · 19/11/2025 23:15

A long soak in the bath now that our reservoirs are beginning to recover.
Sitting in the sun with a coffee at a local stately home looking out over the parkland.
A walk in the woods.
Listening to a radio 4 drama or the comedy slot at 6.30.

Lotsofsnacks · 19/11/2025 23:18

Sunday afternoon in winter; house is all cleaned, log fire on, cosying up on the sofa with a blanket, with cup of tea and a chocolate bar, with my dog and cat snuggled up next me. Watching some easy TV like Escape to the Country or Four in a Bed. Or a Xmas movie if in December :)

SeriousFaffing · 19/11/2025 23:21

Beachhutgirl · 19/11/2025 20:43

Don't wait until spring to go to the seaside OP.

I live near the sea, and its lovely in the winter when most of the visitors are gone. One of my favourite winter treats is a hot chocolate and a sausage roll by the beach.

@Beachhutgirl yesss this. Piping hot doughnuts or chips while the cold sea air blows.

PigeonsandSquirrels · 19/11/2025 23:25

Long walks through the woods and sharing a flask of tea with DH. Sometimes we even take sandwiches and I feel like my nana 😂

Reading Enid Blyton to my nephew.

Hot baths with lit candles flickering.

Cheese and tomato sandwiches and home baked gingerbread.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 19/11/2025 23:25

A nice cup of tea and a sit down in an old-fashioned tea room with cups & saucers and a teapot, with frilly chintzy tablecloths and doilies and all that. And a slice of cake. A well made Victoria sponge is the best cake in the world.

Moknicker · 19/11/2025 23:26

NYT games
walking the dog on a cold fall evening listening to music
baking
reading a good book
the delicious feeling of falling asleep

UnintentionalArcher · 19/11/2025 23:34

Catching up on The Archers.

Watching a classic murder mystery or something like Quincy M.E. or Murder She Wrote with my mum.

Really nice red wine.

Low lights in winter.

A white jasmine room spray or candle.

Those really rare TV shows that just grip you.

A hot shower after getting really, really cold in the sea.

Holding my precious dog.

Looking at my baby son’s face.

Foxybyname · 19/11/2025 23:34

Booksandcheese · 19/11/2025 21:45

An early night with a cup of hot chocolate in bed, with the dog on my lap.
Doing jigsaws
My DH bringing us boiled eggs and soldiers in bed on a Sunday morning
Playing scrabble with a glass or two of wine
Eating chips by the seafront
Making a roast most Sundays
Camping with DH and the dog

I am aware that this makes me sound peak mumsnet so please rest assured I also like drinking far too much in dodgy estate pubs, not being arsed with doing the housework, I dont care if my pants are washed with my towels, eating takeaway in front of crap tv and, neither me or DH have terribly outing hobbies.

"neither me or DH have terribly outing hobbies"

😂i guffawed! V good indeed 👏🏼

BigBen12 · 19/11/2025 23:46

new PJs and clean sheets. Maybe even throw in reading a book in there with a background candle lit. Oh and no one asking me any questions. BLISS.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/11/2025 23:48

Lying in my snuggly warm bed listening to wind and rain outside.

I enjoy a very outing hobby, but I'm not going to tell you what it is.😂

Another simple pleasure of mine - fossicking around on the sad table at the garden centre. I love taking half-dead stuff home and finishing it off altogether bringing it back to life again.
