Old fashioned/simple pleasures that you still enjoy?

There are plenty of things that I appreciate about modern life including MN but I’d love to read about some old fashioned ir simple things that you still enjoy.

Perhaps not the best example but the other day I went to a garden centre and I had an egg mayonnaise sandwich on wholemeal bread with a pot of tea and it was lovely. I often find that a lot of cafes put too many ingredients and sauces in their sandwiches so it was nice to have something relatively plain.

Also sitting having a cup of tea and a simple iced bun while listening to a Radio 4 play. And I’ve been watching old one off dramas and mini-series on Youtube. They’re so much slower paced than dramas now but all the more enjoyable for that.

What simple pleasures do you enjoy?

At the seaside (not a beach as such),think swanage, southsea, Weymouth, nice sit down and an ice-cream to eat :)

VictorianScreenTime · 19/11/2025 19:04

An Angela Thirkell novel and a little glass of sherry of a Sunday😊

Tryingatleast · 19/11/2025 19:05

Cup of tea, reading a magazine/ newspaper, feet in a basin of hot water (not all at the same time!)

TheQuietDignityOfASandwich · 19/11/2025 19:12

I haven’t had a seaside ice cream for years! I’m going to have to make a point of doing that as soon as Spring begins.

I’ll also have to try reading an Angela Thirkell novel, I haven’t read any of her books.

If I have something to buy and it’s stocked in Liberty’s, I go there to buy it if it’s not significantly more expensive to purchase it there. The customer service is impeccable and no matter how small or large my purchase has been, I’m treated like a valued customer. It is proper, old fashioned customer service (Fortums is the same).
Sitting in a cafe with a coffee and knitting/reading a book. Doing a crossword with the children. Sunday evenings we are usually in the living room all together while the children read/colour/play a board game, my husband is on the piano, and I’m knitting or doing some embroidery or hand sewing. It’s one of my favourite parts of our week.

Having a poo. Or a wank. Timeless.

PersephonePomegranate · 19/11/2025 19:24

Reading a real book with pages!

TheQuietDignityOfASandwich · 19/11/2025 19:24

I haven’t bought a magazine in ages either. I’ll have to treat myself.

Clean sheets
Chips in newspaper by the sea
Drinking a glass of red wine slowly with a good book by a proper fire (which means going out because I don't have one where I live currently - miss this!)

Can you still get fish and chips wrapped in newspaper? I’d love some right now.

Northern soul record that's new to me
Cheese and toast done under the grill 😋

Absolutely you can - I'm planning on doing exactly that next Friday. Getting some chips, sitting on a bench overlooking the sea and just enjoying the salt and vinegar goodness while watching seagulls wheel in the sky over the bay.

MokaEfti · 19/11/2025 20:01

Hot waterbottle!

Twattergy · 19/11/2025 20:02

Reading a book on a train with a cup of tea and a snack.
I find doing small repairs with a needle and thread to clothes quite enjoyable and retro too.

Simple and cheap I guess!

ActYourAge · 19/11/2025 20:06

Getting into clean sheets
Watching squirrels in the garden (I leave nuts for them every morning)
Giving myself a pedicure
Taking my bra off at the end of each day - bliss.

DarkEyedSailor · 19/11/2025 20:08

I only have real books, I can't get on with Kindle or whatever.
I make tea in a teapot.
I have a hot water bottle and an electric blanket, a 1940s bedside table and a 1970s bedside lamp.
We have a seaside holiday every Easter.
I just bought a fur muff. (No sniggering at the back please.)
I knit and I mend things; I've got a darning mushroom.
Don't have a computer/tablet, just my phone.
Still listen to my CDs and the radio on an actual radio.
I've got an alarm clock.

Oh I love Angela Thirkell!

YelramBob · 19/11/2025 20:16

This will sound weird but I love using public transport. It's not great where I live so rarely use it; I really enjoy going abroad and using trams and trains. Especially waiting at the stops and striking up conversations with other confused tourists 😅

WhitegreeNcandle · 19/11/2025 20:18

I’ve just discovered a magazine you might like - The Simple Things. Ridiculously expensive but I’m enjoying it as a small pause in the day

AyrshireTryer · 19/11/2025 20:30

Custard

Thank you for this it made me LOL!

MoiraRoseVibes · 19/11/2025 20:41

A second vote for the Simple Thing magazine here… so nice. My daughter and I read it together when it arrives every month. Worth the money.

Beachhutgirl · 19/11/2025 20:43

Don't wait until spring to go to the seaside OP.

I live near the sea, and its lovely in the winter when most of the visitors are gone. One of my favourite winter treats is a hot chocolate and a sausage roll by the beach.

EffinMagicFairy · 19/11/2025 20:44

i always make sure our birdbath is clean with fresh water especially in the summer, one of my little joys is watching the birds having a bath!
