Old fashioned/simple pleasures that you still enjoy?

There are plenty of things that I appreciate about modern life including MN but I’d love to read about some old fashioned ir simple things that you still enjoy.

Perhaps not the best example but the other day I went to a garden centre and I had an egg mayonnaise sandwich on wholemeal bread with a pot of tea and it was lovely. I often find that a lot of cafes put too many ingredients and sauces in their sandwiches so it was nice to have something relatively plain.

Also sitting having a cup of tea and a simple iced bun while listening to a Radio 4 play. And I’ve been watching old one off dramas and mini-series on Youtube. They’re so much slower paced than dramas now but all the more enjoyable for that.

What simple pleasures do you enjoy?

We quite often play games of an evening - backgammon, chess, cards.

I've recently retired so am trying a few simple things.

Knitting
Tea (in a pot) and homemade biscuits
Baking bread
Just popping out with a shopping bag to local shops for a few provisions. Having a little chat with people in the shops.

A pootle round the garden centre.

A pint with chips during a Sunday walk.

Ironing my sheets then getting into a crisp bed.

Drying washing on the line. Even in the winter
Sitting in a quiet house - no conference calls !
Stroking my purring cat.

Cracking thread.

I like doing 1000 piece puzzles of a nice countryside view, or some flowers or a harbour scene, while having a cuppa from a teapot made with tea leaves. Or getting my sewing kit out and altering my kids clothes, sewing on a button, taking a hem up etc.

Nushi21 · 19/11/2025 21:14

I used to dread eating out alone. Now I love it. I love sitting in a cafe with a hot drink, listening to a nice podcast.

I love learning about British history, there’s so much to learn. So glad my son is like me, I mean he’s 10 years old, but his enjoyment in learning about Jack the Ripper, Guy Fawkes, Henry VIII, the world wars and more, makes me so proud.
My husband on the other hand finds history a bore.

I like wrapping up warm and pootling round a garden centre looking at the xmas displays - there are some really good ones near us. Then going home and having a warm mince pie (on a plate that I painted during my Dds birthday party 12 years ago) and a cuppa with the dog all curled up on a blanket on my lap. Bliss.

I’ve recently moved into a city after years of living in the country. Turns out I love walking in the city in the evening, even in the rain, just wandering along seeing where I end up. There is a fab bus service too, so if I walk too far I can hop on it and be home very quickly.

I love making boiled eggs with soldiers, then eating them with a cup of tea made in the pot. It all feels a bit timeless.

SeaAndStars · 19/11/2025 21:24

Making jam, marmalade and chutneys.
The ritual of brewing coffee in my moka pot and drinking it in my special mug on the bench outside my back door.
Swimming in the sea.
Choosing books at the library.
Watching my hens potter about.
Candle light, especially at twilight.

Superb thread OP.

Freshly brewed coffeewhile listening to the dawn chorus.

A solitary walk in the countryside

RosesAndHellebores · 19/11/2025 21:31

My first thought was DH Grin.

Turkey dripping on toast on boxing day morning.
A sunday roast at home if that counts
Oxtail braise
Sherry at Christmas; and Turkish delight

Platypusdiver · 19/11/2025 21:31

Glass of red wine in the pub when the weather is miserable outside.

Sitting by the seaside just listening to the waves and people watching 💕💕(Portobello beaches, Edinburgh 2025)

I love a cheese and pickle sandwich. It's so basic, but really hits the spot.

A second vote for the Simple Thing magazine here… so nice. My daughter and I read it together when it arrives every month. Worth the money.

You can get it for free on the Press Reader app through your local library. Though I know reading it on a tablet might not be quite the same.

pumpkinscake · 19/11/2025 21:38

Lying on the couch with the fire going, reading a book on a wet day. Cup of tea extra bonus points.

A wonderful thread. Thank you @TheQuietDignityOfASandwich

A walk by the sea with my dog.
Lying on the bench in my front garden with a novel and a glass of wine. At least I will when the Melbourne summer arrives.
My morning cup of tea while listening to The Archers.

josephinejosephine · 19/11/2025 21:43

tea and toast
a rosamund pilcher, maeve binchy or a philippa gregory
watching is it cake with my little boy
desert island discs
somewhat weirdly, hanging out the washing

loved reading this thread

Booksandcheese · 19/11/2025 21:45

An early night with a cup of hot chocolate in bed, with the dog on my lap.
Doing jigsaws
My DH bringing us boiled eggs and soldiers in bed on a Sunday morning
Playing scrabble with a glass or two of wine
Eating chips by the seafront
Making a roast most Sundays
Camping with DH and the dog

I am aware that this makes me sound peak mumsnet so please rest assured I also like drinking far too much in dodgy estate pubs, not being arsed with doing the housework, I dont care if my pants are washed with my towels, eating takeaway in front of crap tv and, neither me or DH have terribly outing hobbies.

Have you seen the book A History of Britain In Ten Enemies by Terry Deary? Your DS might love it, and you too most likely. So entertaining and informative

Gribouille · 19/11/2025 21:51

Playing board games. Don't even care if I win, it's just the conversation and jokes and hanging out together while playing... fond childhood memories of that, but no one seems to want to play them these days... 🙁

dudsville · 19/11/2025 21:53

Oh, so many of these! I start 6 out of 7 days with a pot of loose leaf tea in bed, curtains open, just a quiet, gentle, cosy start to the day. I also live a simple, quiet life and aside from MN I don't use sm.

danglethedingle · 19/11/2025 21:54

Radio plays, toffees, toast and marmite. A new bar of nice soap, clean tea towels and emptying the dishwasher while the mugs are still warm.

ghostwhisper · 19/11/2025 21:55

Scrambled eggs
mug of tea and a biscuit
egg mayo sandwich with plain crisps
a mooch around TK maxx or home bargains
a bath, clean bedding and pjs
paddling!
not having to go out when it’s snowing
