Old fashioned/simple pleasures that you still enjoy?

There are plenty of things that I appreciate about modern life including MN but I’d love to read about some old fashioned ir simple things that you still enjoy.

Perhaps not the best example but the other day I went to a garden centre and I had an egg mayonnaise sandwich on wholemeal bread with a pot of tea and it was lovely. I often find that a lot of cafes put too many ingredients and sauces in their sandwiches so it was nice to have something relatively plain.

Also sitting having a cup of tea and a simple iced bun while listening to a Radio 4 play. And I’ve been watching old one off dramas and mini-series on Youtube. They’re so much slower paced than dramas now but all the more enjoyable for that.

What simple pleasures do you enjoy?

Don't wait until spring to go to the seaside OP.

I live near the sea, and its lovely in the winter when most of the visitors are gone. One of my favourite winter treats is a hot chocolate and a sausage roll by the beach.

One of my favourite times to go to the beach is during the more wintery months. Wrapped up warm against the wind. Bracing but wonderful

Sitting by the log burner when the weather is awful outside

Sitting in the garden on a warm spring/summers morning having my first cup of tea

I really miss my daily dog walk, seeing the seasons changing slowly day by day

Crisp sandwich (cheese and onion or prawn cocktail).
Walk in the park when it's snowed.
Rich teas - the finger not the round.
Proper good bread.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 20/11/2025 00:10

@Jambags Have you tried a Pringle sandwich?

Using a fountain pen to write and filling it with ink from a bottle, not cartridges.
And if I don't use my pen, writing in pencil, sharpening pencils and rubbing out mistakes with a rubber.
Keeping a paper diary and using notebooks for all sorts of other things.
I have a card index on my desk too, for the project I'm working on at the moment.

I've definitely reverted to the stationery of my youth! It makes me so happy. Anyone else a traditional stationery fan?

Me!!! 🙋‍♀️

I also keep a diary and have a Waterman pen which my DH bought me one Christmas. I love ink pens! I love (and miss) writing actual letters as the elderly lady I used to write to has passed away.
I love a nice bath with a new magazine to read, and we often turn the tv off in the evenings and sit chatting.
I would never own a Kindle, I love my proper books too much.

My ultimate pastime is going for a long walk with my dear friend who loves and appreciates nature and it’s glorious seasons as much as I do. Sometimes we do a beach walk, but the most uplifting walks are woods, fields and anywhere unspoilt. I feel so good after these walks as if I’ve had a factory reset!
Lovely thread OP 🍁🍂🌿

Horlicks.
Jacket potato cooked in an oven, not the microwave.
Trifle made from packets.
A real newspaper, not the digital version.
Shortbread made at home.
Home grown veg.
Home brewed beer or wine.
A pint of snakebite from a local pub where they knew how to generously dose the blackcurrant.

PompomDahlia · 20/11/2025 00:55

Watching eastenders every day

Doing some gardening with a good podcast on my headphones and a hot cup of tea when I come inside

Making soup and a roll for lunch

mathanxiety · 20/11/2025 02:02

Watching hummingbirds at the feeder I keep filled for them all summer.

wizzler · 20/11/2025 02:06

Potted meat on toast
catching the archers on the radio ( I usually listen to it from the bbc app in the car but it’s more comforting live on the radio somehow )
finding a parking space just where you need it can make the whole day better
a good pen that writes nicely

justjuggling · 20/11/2025 03:44

Love this thread, thank OP!

making chutney
making curd
baking
egg and salad cream sandwiches
growing herbs
walking round my village with my DDs in December to look at Christmas lights
fried back bacon, white bap, brown sauce
hanging washing outside

I’m turning into my grandma and embracing it!

Hillyhillyholly · 20/11/2025 03:45

I love doing a jigsaw puzzle.

Myoldbear · 20/11/2025 08:07

Gardeners' World on television, very gentle and relaxing.

Receiving long letters from my penfriend, which by serendipity always arrive as I'm making morning coffee.
Writing long letters to my penfriend in reply.

Reading The People's Friend magazine which is from a different era.

Rosenspants · 20/11/2025 08:15

What a lovely thread! I may also ask someone to buy me a subscription to The Simple Things for my birthday.
Sewing with cotton lawn fabric
Ironed sheets and pillow cases
Using my beautiful china tea service
Leaf tea from the pot
The beach with an angry sea
Hearing pop music tracks of my years come on the radio
A plate of fresh sandwiches with cress sprinkled over
The first spray of a newly opened bottle of perfume
The stillness of a tidy bedroom

I’d never heard of the magazine before so that’s nothing to do with me. I’m a regular poster. And perhaps they genuinely like the magazine? I don’t know but from what I can see only a few have mentioned it.

Masturbation.

Arraminta · 20/11/2025 08:36

Writing birthday and Christmas cards with a proper fountain pen.
Doing a jigsaw with a big mug of coffee to hand.
Reading a hardback book with a proper bookmark.

TheQuietDignityOfASandwich · 20/11/2025 08:38

Now I’m remembering how much I loved looking around Past Times as a child. I miss that.

Edited

Sure, but how many people have named any other magazine? Or any other branded product?

squashyhat · 20/11/2025 08:39

WhitegreeNcandle · 19/11/2025 20:18

I’ve just discovered a magazine you might like - The Simple Things. Ridiculously expensive but I’m enjoying it as a small pause in the day

Yes! SAGA magazine is similar.

Olive567 · 20/11/2025 08:39

Real books, board games, real Christmas tree, gardening, beach walks and collecting shells or interesting stones knitting, fires, muddy country walks, tea in a pot, vase of fresh flowers, happy afternoon with favourite friends.

TheQuietDignityOfASandwich · 20/11/2025 08:40

I can see a few branded products mentioned from a quick read. Anyway other threads are available.

The People's Friend has been named.

Zuve · 20/11/2025 08:43

I always and enjoy listening to early morning radio 4 news, just like mum did every morning with a cup of tea. Then switch off the radio, and no more politics
