What the fuck is this illness. Covid?

Has anyone else had this absolute abomination of a virus recently? Symptoms:

started off as normal cold, coughing and sneezing
day 2-3 fever from boiling hot to freezing cold shivering
cough mutated into a walrus war cry
mouth tongue and gums burning pain
constant body aches
day 4 every time I cough I can feel it in my rib cage and skull, and it feels like I’m going to tear something in my chest

What the fuck. I had covid in 2021 and it was nowhere near as bad as whatever this is.

Take a covid test. To at least rule it out.

DC555 · 19/11/2025 09:15

I had something like this a few weeks ago, I assumed it was flu because my Covid test was negative. I was in bed with a fever for 3 days and I never ever take to my bed with illness. Literally couldn’t function.

TappaMcFeety · 19/11/2025 09:17

Its probably fucking flu

DC’s school has a major outbreak of whatever it is. 12 kids off in one class alone, 8 kids in hospital.

This year's flu strain is apparently very bad, so it could be that.

Lila9 · 19/11/2025 09:23

It could be Covid or Flu, there's a lot of both around at the moment. Hope you feel better soon!

Octavia64 · 19/11/2025 09:24

I had this. Actually bought a kit and tested - not covid.

took me three weeks to get over it. Still not quite right

Nofuckingziti · 19/11/2025 09:27

Where does one get a covid test these days? We both WFH and I don’t want to send DH to a shop to possibly spread it. I’ll check Amazon.

I ordered mine from Amazon. Was too ill to get out of bed at all for a few days.

I have this. Have struggled into work on a medicine cabinet.

MightyFlow · 19/11/2025 09:33

You can get 2-in-1 tests now, that test for Covid and flu.

Thanks, I’ve Amazon’d some to be delivered by 10pm today.

Annoyingly as ever it hasn’t affected my appetite, so I’m going to tell DH that the only thing that might save me is to deliveroo some pho or ramen for lunch.

Yep me DS and DH have it its horrific! Its been doing the rounds in DS class. For me the fever is the worst part of it

WinoTime · 19/11/2025 09:48

Yes, could be. I think symptoms vary from one person to another

I recently had it again. Was going away for the weekend with friends, and felt a bit off - nothing terrible, but I am usually very healthy. Covid test was negative.

My weekend away was a bit draining as I felt exhausted, hot and just lethargic but powered through. Did another test when I returned home and test was positive. I felt tired for a few more days and that was it.

I would say that previous bouts of Covid a couple of years ago were much more debilitating for me - i had to stay in bed for a few days. This time was just like an annoying lingering cold.

LutherRalph1 · 19/11/2025 09:49

Flu! We picked it up on a flight to Florida, son suffered greatly and got swabbed by doctors- Influenza, it’s been so hard to shift

ElleBelleLou · 19/11/2025 09:52

I’m just coming out of the other side of it, it’s been just under 2 weeks for me. One week solid in bed with a fever, horrible sore throat and chest, pressure headache and full body aches. Managed to get to a doctor on day 8 who diagnosed pneumonia and gave me antibiotics, I am also now on an inhaler as it’s taken such a toll on my chest. I haven’t been this ill in a long, long time! Completely could not even remotely function. Waiting for my appetite to get back to normal as I’ve also had stomach issues full the through thing.

Sassylovesbooks · 19/11/2025 10:00

It sounds like flu. The strain this year is apparently nasty. I wondered if it might be, as my son's school offered the flu nasal vaccine in September and they usually offer it in December. I had my jab in September, when it's normally a bit later.

HelloCharming · 19/11/2025 10:04

DH did a covid test, came back clear (but it was old and I'm not sure it was going to catch a new covid anyway....). We've both had a horrid virus flu thing for the last 3 weeks, think it's gone and then wiped out again the next day. Getting so tired just have to go back to bed. Thoroughly sick of it now. It's gone through work too.

We've both had flu jabs - but I read somewhere it wasn't quite the right one this year, so it might have made it less bad but we still got it.

DH particularly annoyed as he had proper flu last Christmas and wasn't right till February.

We are both fit, eat well, only in our 50s... and have been floored by it.

I bought one at Sainsbury's
But tbh whatever it is it sounds nasty, i wouldnt bother buying a test again, personally.

Doan · 19/11/2025 15:20

Could be Covid as I had similar a few weeks ago. It was sickest I have been in years. I had covid in 2022 and it was like a cold. This time I was floored and I am still tired. I tested as I have an elderly parent and wanted to make sure I was negative before visiting.

Orchid90 · 19/11/2025 19:40

I don’t know but it’s intense .
currently sat here with 38. 1 coughing my lungs out . And shall we talk about the SORE THROAT, like swallowing a mixture of knives and lava razor blades . If it’s flu I’m glad I had the jab. But what I’ll say is that I work at hospital and we keep testing patients and I could swear they have flu , and they tests both covid and flu keep coming back negative 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️so it’s either something else or the test aren’t picking up this variant . I don’t know how the actual tests work though , just that it looks like flu or covid but we aren’t picking it up 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s bad though

confusedlots · 19/11/2025 19:46

It’s likely either flu or Covid, 3 of us in our household have it right now. One has been in bed for the past 5 days and is really bad with it. DS is up and down but I can’t get his temperature under control, it’s been up to just over 40. I feel rotten with it but haven’t got it as bad as a lot of people. I guess it doesn’t really matter what it is, it’s just a viral illness and try to treat the symptoms and keep your temperature down.

To spread it around?!

DuchessofStaffordshire · 19/11/2025 19:55

Ahhhh god, yes!
Bloody horrible too. The worst COVID yet (at least for me). I can't actually remember ever being that unwell in my life. It seemed to last around 2 weeks for me but my resting heart rate still hasn't come down to normal after a month. I got over the worst of it after about a week and decided to go for a run to try and 'blow it off' ( I was getting very impatient by this point). Felt like I was dying the next day. Stupid thing to do in retrospect.
