Unexpected life hacks you stumbled across

I’ve just discovered that my body mist cleans my spectacles brilliantly. As good as my opticians cleaning spray and a lot cheaper. Added bonus it makes my glasses smell nice too and I didn’t like the smell of the glasses spray. I only used it as it was to hand and my other spray had run out.
Have other mumsnetters stumbled across any life hacks unexpectedly?

When hanging skirts in my wardrobe, rather than putting the skirt hangers clips across the waistband, I fold my skirts in half lengthways and clip them at the bottom. They then take up half the space and my wardrobe looks much neater.

Washing up liquid on finger, rub, rinse under tap. Dry. Perfect.

This method stripped the coating off my lenses 🤦🏼‍♀️!

Write all your birthday cards at the start of the year, and have them in a pile ready to post.

Soft fruit like raspberries will keep for several days in a small mason jar with a lid - I have the jars that look like fruit. They go mouldy in 24 hours if not.

Hairspray can remove sticker residue.

UV light shows up the areas that still have urine after cleaning up after a pet accident. Cats will return if the area remains marked with urine.

If you make crumble mix you can bake any surplus as a granola type thing. You can add nuts and oats.

Oven chips are so much better in the air fryer. Particularly French fries.

To avoid large packets of crisps going stale, eat the whole packet in one sitting.*

I find this also works on chocolate and ice cream (not that they go stale of course)

Quite so. Why risk it?

Sunlight removes (bleaches) baby poop stains from clothing/fabric.

I’m blown away by this. How?

Are you a serial killer?

Nope, just mum to a child who spouts blood from both nostrils most days!

Although if I were a serial killer I would hardly admit it, would I... 🤣

Put moisturiser on your skin before swimming to create a protective barrier against the chemicals that dry and irritate the skin.

PruthePrune · 16/11/2025 09:42

Make more use of your chain mail and wear it when administering tablets to your cat.

Does anybody else dislike the word "hack" and yearn, nostalgically, for the word "tip"?

Yes, much prefer "tips!"

Aren’t you meant to shower before swimming so that you wash chemicals from lotions and creams off ? (as well as dirt, sweat etc)

Use a teaspoon like bar or soap to wash your hands after chopping garlic or onions.

Store mushrooms with a piece of kitchen paper on top, after you take the plastic off.

Wipe radiators with some fabric conditioner on, cleans them and they smell nice.

Am I the only one who can’t tolerate the smell of fabric conditioner and zoflora?

A vet gave me this tip: wrap the tablets in chicken liver pate then put them in the freezer. Then you can pop the frozen tablet into the back of their mouth and they will swallow it because they only taste meat.

@breezyyysunlight actually bleaches any natural stains, such as tomato etc from baby (or any) clothes.

But how? I know I must google and ask Google but I’m suspending disbelief at the moment ☺️

WombatCowgirl · 16/11/2025 09:49

Frost is also a bleaching/ whitening agent for anything hung on the line: muslin squares, cloth nappies, antique tablecloths etc. it doesn't fade like sunlight does, it just whitens and brightens.

Crucible · 16/11/2025 09:51

For dried on pigeon poop on a car, do not risk.your paintwork, just soak a piece of old towel in very hot water, lay it on the poop, leave for 5 mins then wipe it off. No need for chemicals of any sort.

I put portions of chopped onion in freezer bags and keep in the freezer.Cooks the same and you dont need to chop onion every time you're cooking meals that need it.

Yet another jar lid hack - use a can opener to lift the lid until the seal is broken. Then the lid will be easy to open. I've been doing it for years and it's never failed me yet. Don't wrench the lid off with the can opener, it's just to break the seal.

I stab mine with a pointy-ended kitchen knife. It’s very satisfying when the bastard thing won’t come off!

(PS I keep a couple of spare lids that I’ve managed to undo without stabbing that I can swop to after.)

Parsleyforme · 16/11/2025 09:56

I know there are loads of hacks for jar lids but I put on a pair of dry rubber gloves and they pop right off, takes seconds

I’ve used the tip above about saltwater on blood but it never worked. My mum taught it to me when I started my period. I find stain remover, cold water rinse then hydrogen peroxide works better, you can see it bubbling on the stain

I don’t suppose anyone has a tip for cleaning oven racks? I hate scrubbing them.

I use wire wool so it’s not that difficult, but surely there must be a quicker way!

I do this too because onions make eyes stream like nothing else unless I wear goggles, it becomes dangerous to keep going! So I chop loads at once with goggles and keep in the freezer

You can buy oven cleaner. Use thick rubber gloves and brush the cleaner all over the shelves and lay them on old cloths or newspaper. Best to do it in summer and put them outside as the fumes aren’t good.
