Satsuma watch

WHERE ARE THE SATSUMAS?? I’ve been looking for a couple of weeks ans they usually appear at the end of October, but there are none to be found in Aldi, Waitrose or Co-op. I remember there not being any around last year either so suspect that this is all down to bloody Brexit. And, no, tangerines or clementines or “easy peelers” are not an acceptable substitute.

Has anyone spotted any? They are my favourite fruit and I look forward to them all year.

I’ve just found some really nice ones in M &S .

Not a single satsuma to be had on Tesco on-line shopping. Sad

Are satsumas the baggy ones that are conversely easier to peel than easy peelers?

I haven’t eaten citrus fruit (bar a slice in my G&T) for over 25 years due to migraines and confess to just bunging whatever in the fruit bowl for the kids.

MaturingCheeseball · 18/11/2025 17:18

Yes, a satsuma is a leeetle bit baggy. Too baggy and it has gone over. Too tight and it’s still sour. Like a perfect melon just the top has to have some give. Also a satsuma is juicy and sweet. Clementine juice tastes like watered-down orange squash, and easy peelers are just diabolical. Dry little aberrations.

tobee · 18/11/2025 17:59

Yes, yes I love satsumas!! All hail the baggy!!!
They're like gold dust these days

tobee · 18/11/2025 18:00

I want to drop kick all the Easy Peelers.

Oblomov25 · 20/11/2025 04:04

M&S you say?

Growlybear83 · 20/11/2025 15:12

😡😡. I’ve just had a message from ocado to say that my M&S satsumas for today’s delivery have been substituted with easy peelers. I was looking forward to my first satsuma of the autumn.

Send them back, send a message that there's no acceptable substitute.

LaserPumpkin · 20/11/2025 17:21

I thought their attempt to substitute the pineapple chunks that I ordered with an actual pineapple was bad enough, but that substitution is unforgivable.

jackbenimblejackbequick · 20/11/2025 20:03

Sleazy peelers making their sneaky way into everything… grrr

Annoying that Waitrose have all the wannabe orange things in their 2 for £2.50 offer but NOT satsumas. £1.70 for 5 fruits in one net and 6 in the other, grrrr. That will do me for the next 2 days.

My other joy at this time of year is Brazil nuts. Equally hard to find!

butterdish93 · 20/11/2025 20:07

The easy peelers I’ve been getting lately from Aldi and Tesco and lovely and crisp and tangy, with no pips!

Rina66 · 20/11/2025 20:13

I got some in Sainsbury’s this week, actual satsumas!

Sleazy peelers 🤣 I will definitely using that from now on!

Tobacco · 26/11/2025 14:51

I've tried Waitrose, M&s and Sainsbury's with no luck. Sainsbury's and Marks had a satsuma label on an empty shelf

LaserPumpkin · 26/11/2025 14:58

Tesco had satsumas in their Clubcard special offer section a couple of days ago. I’m somewhat dubious but bought a pack anyway, just waiting to finish my last M&S pack

Oh. I do my main shop with Tesco online but didn't think they stocked them. I'll look next time I go to the shop. Thanks

I am the only one who assumed this was about a branded timepiece? Not joking.

Growlybear83 · 26/11/2025 15:45

I’ve got satsumas on my ocado order for tomorrow. It says they’re in stock at the moment …..

My people 😘

Nothing lasts forever, I agree with PP that it feels as if satsumas are being phased out. Whether that's due to climate change and the growing conditions or something else I don't know but it's good to know I'm not alone in being unhappy about this situation <group hug>

Another situation that displeases me is that I used to be able to tell if they had seeds in by sniffing them before I bought them. Either my nose is letting me down in my old age or some fucker's trying to get the better of me. Well, good luck with that because I just won't buy them.

I see your satsumas, clementines, tangerines, mandarins, easy peelers and raise you ... pomelos! 😍

And sweetie grapefruits. Where the hell is one supposed to source them nowadays. Even Markies has let me down on that front for the last few years 😩

Riverford do Sweetie Grapefruits if you can get a delivery from them.
It's about £5 for 2.

European farmers started switching out from growing satsumas over a decade ago to concentrate on other citrus.
Apparently most of Europe aren't satsuma fans the way Brits were, which is why there are less to buy.

CitrusAficionado · 26/11/2025 16:03

That's interesting @Troublein , thank you. I've had a look, sadly Riverford don't deliver here.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 14/11/2025 18:46

Easy peelers my arse. There's nothing that peels easier than a satsuma anyway.

^This.

I love satsuma threads. My people!!

I've been buying satsumas in Sainsbury's for at least a month. Asked DH to look in Tesco when he went, but no luck. I'll have to check Ocado but they're always out of stock when I do, so I tend not to bother.

thenightsky · 26/11/2025 16:20

I typed 'satsumas' into the Tesco online search box and got given a choice of 3 bags of little oranges, all marked 'easy peelers'.

I wonder if the market stalls in town will have them.
