Satsuma watch

WHERE ARE THE SATSUMAS?? I’ve been looking for a couple of weeks ans they usually appear at the end of October, but there are none to be found in Aldi, Waitrose or Co-op. I remember there not being any around last year either so suspect that this is all down to bloody Brexit. And, no, tangerines or clementines or “easy peelers” are not an acceptable substitute.

Has anyone spotted any? They are my favourite fruit and I look forward to them all year.

You people have made me so happy.

My absolute favourite satsuma is one that is slightly underripe, has a green tinge and is sour enough to make your eyes wince!

Now, that’s Christmas!

That is the only way to eat them.

Tesco have had orange things in that claim to be satsumas but I don’t trust them. They don’t taste right.

bottledboot · 13/11/2025 22:37

I feel like satsumas are slowly getting phased out.

bottledboot · 13/11/2025 22:39

I'm not that fussed about them to be honest. I don't like when they are sour or dry.

Jesus I’m thick
when I read the title (and casually scanned OP’s first post) I thought it was some special watch brand I never heard of that has limited seasonal releases

Woah now, easy on the sprout hate <holds fists up like Victorian boxer>

Right?! 🥬

Munchyseeds2 · 14/11/2025 07:11

I love a satsuma.

Sadly, I don't buy any citrus fruit now that it's all spayed with a cancer causing chemical that's banned in the EU😫

Wjdbxb · 14/11/2025 12:15

Success in M&S! The run up to Christmas can now begin. 🍊

I've never met anyone in real life who shares the opinion that satsumas are way more delicious than easy peelers. I always get looked at in an odd way when I say this! Glad I have found some kindred spirits 😆

hexsnidgett · 14/11/2025 17:49

I think some people never look at the variety of things. I also wait for Victoria plums and russet apples.

Ack. Stupid train wifi.

MsSmartShoes · 14/11/2025 17:51

I love satsumas and all other small
citrus are inferior.
I would accept a blood orange as a substitute (but out of season).

MaturingCheeseball · 14/11/2025 18:01

Ahhhh, the satsuma thread.

I claim the prize of Satsuma Queen as I overdosed on them one year as a child and turned yellow - apparently I was devouring ten a day.

Anyway, they taste best from a market: ice cold, fat, slightly loose skin, succulent…. But there are no street markets round here any more. Are there still stalls in central London?

They used to be only at their prime for a few weeks before Christmas. In the last few years they have been really rare and just not right - skin too tight, fibrous, not very juicy.

I would be willing to travel miles to lay my hands on a decent specimen.

CitrusAficionado · 14/11/2025 18:14

My people 😘

Nothing lasts forever, I agree with PP that it feels as if satsumas are being phased out. Whether that's due to climate change and the growing conditions or something else I don't know but it's good to know I'm not alone in being unhappy about this situation <group hug>

Another situation that displeases me is that I used to be able to tell if they had seeds in by sniffing them before I bought them. Either my nose is letting me down in my old age or some fucker's trying to get the better of me. Well, good luck with that because I just won't buy them.

I see your satsumas, clementines, tangerines, mandarins, easy peelers and raise you ... pomelos! 😍

And sweetie grapefruits. Where the hell is one supposed to source them nowadays. Even Markies has let me down on that front for the last few years 😩

RuncibleSpoons · 14/11/2025 18:19

Im such a satsuma aficionado, I can tell if it’s going to be a good one, just by a feel of the exterior.

Oblomov25 · 14/11/2025 18:27

We too are looking, waiting.

SwirlyGates · 14/11/2025 18:42

I got some a couple of weeks ago in Morissons, but we're back to Easy Peelers now. Hmm

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 14/11/2025 18:46

Easy peelers my arse. There's nothing that peels easier than a satsuma anyway.

See, I just don’t understand how people can possibly think that an easy peeler or a clementine is nicer. They are dull, flavourless things in comparison.

EeyoresLostTail · 14/11/2025 18:54

I've gotten them recently from Asda Tesco and Sainsbury

fatsatsuma · 14/11/2025 18:59

I too have found my people [draws attention to username]

I despise easy peelers. But have had some fairly good satsumas from Sainsburys recently.

Matildahoney · 14/11/2025 19:00

I've only seen them in Sainsbury's and they were tiny!! Waitrose didn't have any last Fri, nor did m&s will keep looking!

This! ^^

Agree with all of you. Clementines, tangerines, and Sleazy Peelers all smell different to me. Yuck. Market satsumas are THE BEST! Oh I did the same as a child, @MaturingCheeseball I used to get through bags and bags of them.

Saw them in Waitrose but £1.70 for about 5 lacklustre specimens.

Bestnottalkaboutit · 14/11/2025 19:29

Pemba · 13/11/2025 17:21

And what is it with the term 'easy peeler' So bloody patronising. Just tell us whether it's a Clementine (bleurgh), tangerine (passable) or a lovely satsuma!

I am the odd woman in the supermarket peering at the labels as it tells you what variety they are! Waitrose I find varies - sometimes nardicott and often satsumas/mandarins.

Satsumas in at my nearest Waitrose

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/11/2025 19:30

I can't tell the difference between them all these days. All tasteless and shrivelled...
