Satsuma watch

WHERE ARE THE SATSUMAS?? I’ve been looking for a couple of weeks ans they usually appear at the end of October, but there are none to be found in Aldi, Waitrose or Co-op. I remember there not being any around last year either so suspect that this is all down to bloody Brexit. And, no, tangerines or clementines or “easy peelers” are not an acceptable substitute.

Has anyone spotted any? They are my favourite fruit and I look forward to them all year.

I’m trying one from my successful M&S trip as part of my breakfast and it is a good satsuma: juicy, the flavour is right, just the right amount of sourness. Bliss.

Is this thread the work of the Satsuma Marketing Board?!

I read it with increasing salivation in anticipation of a citrus fruit finally worth waiting all year for 😋. I eagerly headed to Waitrose last night to grab myself a bag or two. They only had the essentials range but I thought they’ll do, they’re part of John Lewis.

Fast forward to this morning. Just had one for breakfast and was SO disappointed! It peeled well and was juicy. But had no taste at all. Can I leave them to ripen for a couple of days, or do I just need to accept I got a bland batch?

Honestly this weather is so dank and dour. I was looking for a tangy vitamin C hit to brighten up my mood. Next stop Sainsbury’s.

Ooh no, you’ve got a rubbish batch there.

Managed to snag a bag today from M&S. Had to dig through the easy peelers and they were expensive, but worth it!

MaturingCheeseball · 16/11/2025 09:43

Yes, M&S !! Dh bought me a bag yesterday and they are most acceptable. They even have, as a pp mentioned, a very slight green tinge on a small part of each satsuma (proportion of green v important).

jackbenimblejackbequick · 16/11/2025 10:12

I got some of the M&S ones - reduced as they had yesterday’s date on them. £1.88 so still costly and I’m not sure I approve of the signage “Satsuma Family”, but they were lovely. (Yes, ate all 8 in 2 sittings) Grin

FeatheryFlorence · 16/11/2025 10:12

I bought a bag in Waitrose yesterday. They were dull and tasteless. All of them. I ate the whole bag to make sure. I think I’ll go back to mandarines.

EleanorReally · 16/11/2025 10:16

i got satsumas from asda yesterday - they normally sell clementines and i like them

liveforsummer · 16/11/2025 10:20

Morrisons normally have some variation in small oranges

usedtobeboss3 · 16/11/2025 10:24

My Morrisons have had proper, nice Satsumas for a couple of weeks now. (Which is remarkable, becasue they don't seem to have much else...)

EverardDeTroyes · 16/11/2025 10:25

Another satsuma fan here. So far this year, I've only been able to find easy peelers and they are a) not particularly easy to peel, and b) horribly fibrous and tasteless.

I hate to break it to all of you, but, you know how orange juice has shot up in price lately? I was reading that was due to something like a crop failure. It could be that satsumas (and other small citrus fruits) will be affected as well. It just seems to me that, as a whole, the orangey citrus fruits aren't dominating the shelves as much this year as they normally do.

Norugratsatall · 16/11/2025 10:39

Honestly, I can’t tell the difference between all the small orange fruit. I will eat it if it’s a) sweet and b) juicy and c) there are no pips! Sometimes that’s a clementine, sometimes it’s a satsuma and sometimes it’s one of the dreaded ‘easy peelers’ which, as other posters have pointed out, are definitely not easy to peel. Tight skin usually means they’re sour as fuck so I look for loose skinned specimens.

Wolbutter · 16/11/2025 10:41

2 bags from Ocado this weekend! Hurray.

LaserPumpkin · 16/11/2025 10:57

Just got the last bag from M&S. Clearly you all live locally to me!

LittleMy77 · 16/11/2025 16:04

I'm having to ration them! DS has become a fiend for the satsumas, preferring those over the easy peelers, turns out he's not easily fooled.

Tesco taunt me as they're on the page every week when I do my shopping order, but always out of stock

unleashthebook · 16/11/2025 16:27

Omg I was searching online for them earlier as our Tesco and Lidl don’t have any yet 😂 I was on holiday last week and the fruit n veg shop had massive ones so I was buying tons of them. The only place with stock is sainsburys and I don’t know why because they’re so superior to the “easy” peelers which are not easy at all 🙄

StrongLikeMamma · 18/11/2025 08:32

None in Sainsburys - all easy fucking peelers! Going to check out Waitrose

Cheeseontoastghost · 18/11/2025 08:36

Aaaah the green tinge makes all the difference.
I've been scoffing them since October.
My local greengrocer has them loose in crates.
Estimate about 2kg per week consumed in this household of 2

Toddlerteaplease · 18/11/2025 08:36

M&S have some lovely ones in.

Mogwatch · 18/11/2025 08:36

I love that this thread is still running and giving live updates.

Satsumas Watch lives! Build it and they (we) will come.

Pashazade · 18/11/2025 08:42

Ohh I’d forgotten to check, must look (might pop into M&S later as I’m up town anyway,).

jackbenimblejackbequick · 18/11/2025 12:54

Got some in Tesco near work yesterday, just to compare and contrast. £1.55 for around 6 fruits with a greenish tinge to some. Disappointing. They have a touch of the clementine about them. M&S best so far! Hoping to stop at my local market later!

Ginmonkeyagain · 18/11/2025 14:53

Sainsbury's have some, but you have to dig around.

My theory is they are less aesthetically pleasing than clementines - so people don't buy them as much. Fools. They are the best little orange.

CoastalCalm · 18/11/2025 15:13

I got a box of them delivered from a farm share thing last year - they were amazing and while initially I thought they may get wasted they didn’t

ginasevern · 18/11/2025 15:22

We always had a big bowl of satsumas at Christmas when I was a child and I followed the tradition. They used to be everywhere in the shops around Christmas but over the last maybe 10 years they've become hard (or even impossible) to get. Why I wonder? I bloody hate those easy peeler things and not that keen on clementines. Satsumas mean Christmas to me and I love them.
