What will Starmer do if Huntingdon...

Stabbing turns out to be terror related or in a similar vein to incident to recent incidents that were related to immigration ? We don't know the identities yet of the perpetrators. But the fact the Home Secretary is brought in to comment in tabloids and the discussion on LK on BBC today makes me worried its a possibility. The poor people on the train - I cannot even imagine .. ..Starmer needs to tackle knife crime as its rife. What is the answer ? When is there a tipping point ? I don't know but something must be done - I've never paid as much attention other than feeling so terribly sorry for any victims and families. Now I'm starting to get angry when I see anything like this

I don’t like people vandalising places by painting flags on them, shouting at hotel or rioting in the street that are carried out by people with fucked up ideologies.

Oh yes painting flags. What an atrocity 🙄.

BackToLurk · 02/11/2025 15:18

As has been observed elsewhere, the overwhelming majority of violent offenders have one very obvious thing in common, they’re male. Sure that intersects with all sorts of other parts of their identity, but that’s the massive common factor. When’s that going to get addressed? Why do we keep putting this violent minority in charge of things? When will we learn?

(Full disclosure I’m not properly British, as although I was born here, one of my parents wasn’t and has never been a British citizen. Although it never seems to have been an issue as she’s white)

Bags packed @MrsSkylerWhite , they'll be demanding your deportation asap.

Of course you would. I don’t even know where my id is as I don’t carry my purse with me.

Well just have it handy? My drivers license is in my phone case, it'd not hard to have these things handy particularly if planning on fleeing a war torn country.

It makes me so scared for the future of this country.

Like i said earlier, less than 30% think like this.

If Starmer is serious about dealing with this, he needs to put in place PR before the next GE.... or the minority will take this country down to depths not seen since the 30s.

PR will ensure a coalition of normal people will keep these people out of power.

More British? Seriously? More British than someone who can trace their lineage to these isles from the 1600s?

Some say 1945. Others say 1900.

I said 'one could argue'. Personally I don't tend to judge people by how long they or their ancestors have been somewhere. I judge them on whether they are good citizens, decent human beings, people I want to have in my life. You know, things of substance rather than shallow little ethnic tick boxes.

Some of the worst people I have met have been through and through British. Ethnic background really doesn't indicate the measure of a person.

I note you carefully not answering my question I asked you, so here it is again:

Are you or are you not disturbed by the way Britishness is now being equated with skin colour?

If Reform had anything to do with it, shouldn’t be surprised.

So someone migrating here from America is still American even if they apply for British citizenship because that's where they were born.

It all depends. People seem to want to make this very simple, but it isn't. Someone emigrating here from the US might positively want to renounce their US citizenship and/or identity and re-invent themselves as British, or they might be keen to have dual citizenship, or they might regard themselves as culturally British already if they have British ancestry, as many US citizens do. Equally a US citizen might have ancestry from almost any part of the globe, given the scale of mass migration to the US in the 19th and 20th centuries. They might very well have mixed heritage. Hardly anyone who now lives in the US would be able to claim an ancestor born in North America earlier than about 1600.

It's very common indeed to feel an attachment to more than one place. I am Scottish - born there, all ancestors that I know about also born there. I have lived in England most of my life, but I still regard myself as Scottish. My children have lived in England all their lives and have an English father, but they both put themselves down on the census as Scottish as well as English. My brother has gone back to live in Scotland, but still supports an English football team and frequently goes back to our old city for matches.

Not the same as moving from one sovereign nation to another, but if your family are in place A, where you grew up, and you now live in place B, surely most of us will feel we belong to both.

No - but a crime nonetheless. Not exactly something that should be encouraged now, should it?

First thing labor did was cut the winter fuel allowance. Shows how bad they were as they've now given it back.
They should refund everyone from last year.
Bloody disgusting, dont mind paying millions to house and feed asylum seekers though.

Billions.Its billions not millions.

This. Feels that there are more because many are obnoxious gobshites who shout louder than anyone else.

landlordhell · 02/11/2025 15:23

BBC now saying ‘likely not terror related’ as opposed to ‘nothing to suggest terror related’.

Pharazon · 02/11/2025 15:24

localnotail · 02/11/2025 15:15

I dont consider myself to be anything apart from an ordinary British person going about my daily life. I have never had any issues as both myself and my DC are blond and blue eyed, and I've had some "nice" people telling me "but you are British, you are one of us" - doubt they would have said it if I had different colouring.

I had a discussion recently with a friends who's very aware he has descended form the Huguenots. Should he be considering himself French, not English? What about Black people who's ancestry goes back hundreds of years? What about Indian families who came here 2 centuries ago? I'm very aware some people have the opinion you can't be English if you are not white - which is a definition of racism for me.

And what about black British people whose forebears (the Windrush generation) were all British from birth? Jamaican citizenship didn’t even exist until 1962, and even after then Jamaicans remained British.

WonderfulSmith · 02/11/2025 15:25

HPFA · 02/11/2025 15:04

Amazing how quickly people have switched from claiming this is all about immigration to just straight racism about Black communities.

Isn’t it. On the thread last night there were people calling for the bombing of small boats and putting all immigrants in camps. Now suddenly it’s all about how many generations back we have to go go before someone counts as British.

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 02/11/2025 15:22

Billions.Its billions not millions.

Mostly due to the terrible long term contracts, most until 2028, the Tories gave the private companies managing the Hotels, an average of £145 pp per night, with out of date food served up.

Thats why its costing so much... but blame Labour.

Someone painting a flag is not comparable to, for example, all the anitsemitic crap we see on 'the protests'. If you were Jewish and heard lunatics screeching 'from the river to the sea' you'd have reason to be scared. A flag on a lamppost not so much.

TheRedOrca · 02/11/2025 15:26

Still nothing on the motives

I take it you posted all this during the 14 years the Tories presided over the immigration and asylum system? Their total failure to get applications processed quickly and fairly is one big reason we're in the mess we are now. Nobody should be waiting years to find out whether they can stay here. If they are entitled to stay, they can then get work and pay taxes, which we badly need, given the big labour shortage in sectors like care and hospitality.

pointythings · 02/11/2025 15:28

Gloriia · 02/11/2025 15:18

I refer you to the Drogheda arson attack on an asylum hotel yesterday. Would you consider than an atrocity? Because I do.

'Vandalism'. You compared not liking flag painting to the atrocities we are discussing for some reason.

IFartAlot · 02/11/2025 15:30

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/11/2025 15:00

What does it matter?

Then what does it mean to be British? Is there nothing about "belonging to a place". If I pack my bags and move to Kenya am I then kenyan?

How do we then define what it means to be "of a place"?
