What will Starmer do if Huntingdon...

Stabbing turns out to be terror related or in a similar vein to incident to recent incidents that were related to immigration ? We don't know the identities yet of the perpetrators. But the fact the Home Secretary is brought in to comment in tabloids and the discussion on LK on BBC today makes me worried its a possibility. The poor people on the train - I cannot even imagine .. ..Starmer needs to tackle knife crime as its rife. What is the answer ? When is there a tipping point ? I don't know but something must be done - I've never paid as much attention other than feeling so terribly sorry for any victims and families. Now I'm starting to get angry when I see anything like this

I have not seen any since the government allowed the companies to cut train security officers so that they are only on the platforms and can board at a station/stop, not the trains as they travel.

They are on LNER trains.

Well... stop and search no matter what. Increase it and pay no attention to the views that minorities are targeted. This is about safety not racism. Really tackle immigration - honestly - it should be women and kids mostly immigrating if its that bad but it's mostly young men - blows my mind other than perhaps women being oppressed (in which case we should not want people with those views entering anyway ). Assimilation programmes - en masse. If you are a migrant and we allow you to stay you go through rigorous assimilation. Help and firm reviews /monitoring of their job status . Well... these things cost money though and have to weigh up the benefits vs just saying no to immigration (that is not economic and controlled via visas etc)

Men pave the way with immigration because without a wife and children, they are free to work and build a life. Family follows when settled and established. You cannot police the views of immigrants any more than you can police the views of local populations. That’s not what we’re about as a country, is it? Assimilation programme? Are you serious? Diversity is exactly what we’re about. Bloody great big melting pot. Who gives a fuck what people wear, think or believe? We cannot just say no to immigration. Any more than we can ignore our obligations to those seeking asylum under international law. Get a bloody grip.

Anyone with a brain knows the same about Starmer - except he's not saying anything at all about prevention or public safety.

@AnareticDegree what do you expect him to say? promise to keep people safe? that would be a lie.

Netcurtainnelly · 02/11/2025 12:10

TheNuthatch · 02/11/2025 12:09

Anyone with a brain knew that Starmer couldn't either, yet here we are.

He still hasn't responded about the innocent dog walker stabbed to death in Uxbridge last week by an Afghan loony living in an HMO.

It means nothing to me that the police are saying they are British Nationals, because that doesn't imply loyalty to our country anymore.
Farage being a prime example, running off to America to run the country down.

Tbf Starmer doesnt seem particularly interested in the UK either. He's never here.

As are all of yours.

They cannot release a name until the suspect is charged. It has always been, and will always be, this way. The only reason people are pushing back is because they don't like what they have been told. It was exactly the same after the car drove into the crowd in Liverpool in May (in fact, I think I recall you saying the exact same things at that time!), because people seek confirmation bias. There have been crimes that have been committed by extremists which have been labelled as such and people have not pushed back to this degree.

The police admitted that they did not handle Southport correctly, and have made changes.

Both men HAVE been charged with attempted murder.

Alondra · 02/11/2025 12:12

Starmer can't revert 14 years of conservative policies. He's a sitting duck, dealing how those policies affect the UK without moves for him to manoeuvrer. The UK is in serious debt, and lack of money to reverse social services without creating more social issues is crucial.

The torys wanted a UK similar to the US. They got it. Except Britain is a small island close to Europe and not a superpower.

Why have policies that result in this then?

Barclays is forecasting that Reeves will be looking for £41bn in tax rises in the budget, up from their prediction of £26.5bn in September.

Of course he hasn't. He's flailing and out of his depth.

Well things need to be paid for? The NHS, pensions?

There was a guard on the train! LNER trains have guards.

I really don't know what guards could have done to stop this happening, it's the mentality of the perpetrators that commit these atrocities that needs addressing.

Ah, out comes the toxic nostalgia.

Why don't you give a toss about Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

Yes it wasn't all fairy dust.
I remember as a child being very nervous about the IRA.
I remember a local pub in London being blown up by a bomb in the nearby bins.

cottonwoolie · 02/11/2025 12:14

First thing labor did was cut the winter fuel allowance. Shows how bad they were as they've now given it back. They should refund everyone from last year.Bloody disgusting, dont mind paying millions to house and feed asylum seekers though.

Nothing wrong with means testing winter fuel

What happened to

Labour's manifesto is, "fully funded and fully costed - no ifs, no ands, no buts… no additional tax rises."

"I have been very clear that every policy we announce, and every line in our manifesto, will be fully costed and fully funded."

“Nothing in our plans requires any additional tax to be increased.”

“We’ve got the Office for Budget Responsibility now… You don’t need to win an election to find out [about the public finances].”

“I don’t believe that fiddling around with tax rates is the best way to grow the economy.”

taxguru · 02/11/2025 12:14

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 02/11/2025 12:03

They need rail security officers. Expecting a catering employee to take down a knife wielding attacker is ludicrous.

How are you going to pay for security staff on all trains? Train fares are already stupidly expensive for crap service. LNER is a government owned rail operator using goverrnment owned railway tracks. So either fares rise enormously, or the taxpayer has to pay more taxes to pay for security for a minority of people using trains. Make it make sense!

They are on LNER trains.

Not that I have seen since before Covid.
I travel that N/S route a lot between London and Edinburgh.

WeCouldBeNiceToEachOther · 02/11/2025 12:14

I find it interesting that certain posters are avoiding the fact they did exactly the same thing in response to the attack at the Liverpool parade. There were threads upon threads insisting that the attack wasn’t British and that he couldn’t be white, the police were lying.

And then promptly went very quiet when he was charged and his name was released.

Griseleda · 02/11/2025 12:15

Taytoface · 02/11/2025 11:48

If this was premeditated, it was pretty poor planning. Peterborough and Huntingdon are really close together. A large police presence was there within minutes. The station is less than a mile from a hospital and a fire and rescue centre. There are so many other places on that train line that are much more isolated and that the police would have taken much longer to get to. If you wanted to do maximum damage, that is not the best location.

I think I have seen reports that the attackers got on at Peterborough, and the attack started very soon after. At first I thought it was unlikely to be gang/drug related, given the scale of casualties, but I am not convinced now.

I said on the other thread that my first thought last night was that it might be county lines gangs because we have a big problem with these gangs coming to my town and having knife fights then getting on the train back to London. Still think this could be the case

Tell the Labour back benchers that. Starmer is running scared of them, hence why he can't make the changes we need as he only cares about remaining prime minister!

I'm.sorry to hear that 😭 . That's awful and also not right as if the media overly focuses on the cases where immigration is a factor it gives a really warped view on the real problem

You mention immigration in your first sentence. Seems like you are in tune with the ‘warped’ media?

As I have said above, I don’t think they could do anything. But people are trying to argue that this happened because there are no guards on trains anymore. However, there are guards on LNER.
